Novel physical phenomena have been discovered at these nanoscale topological polarization discontinuities by mapping out the polarization in each atomic unit cell around the DW in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). However, identifying these features requires an understanding of the polarization in the overall domain structure of the TEM sample, which is often a time-consuming process. Here, a fast method of polarization mapping in the TEM is presented, which can be applied to a range of ferroelectric materials. Due to the coupling of polarization to spontaneous strain, we can isolate different strain states and demonstrate the fast mapping of the domain structure in ferroelectric lead titanate (PTO). The method only requires a high-resolution TEM or STEM image and is less sensitive to zone axis or local strain effects, which may affect other techniques. Thuhas. That lets the TEM user quickly know where the domains are in their TEM samples and roughly which way the arrows of charge are pointing. Then they can choose the most interesting features focus on for higher resolution analysis. © 2020 The Authors Journal of Microscopy © 2020 Royal Microscopical Society.OBJECTIVES To report results of surgical excision and Penrose drainage for the treatment of elbow hygromas in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective review of the clinical records of 19 dogs with elbow hygromas treated with Penrose drainage or surgical excision between 1997 and 2014. The data retrieved from the records included breed, gender, age, duration of clinical signs, weight, historical data, complete blood count and serum biochemistry, physical examination findings, diameter of the hygroma, cytology of needle aspirates, method of treatment, histological findings, postsurgical complications and their management and outcome. RESULTS Twenty-one hygromas were treated in 19 dogs. Eleven were right-sided, six were left-sided and four were bilateral. First-line treatment was Penrose drain placement in 12 and complete surgical excision in nine. Bilateral hygromas were addressed simultaneously. Four of the 12 hygromas managed with Penrose drain recurred and one developed ulceration over the olecranon. Recurrent hygromas were treated by surgical excision. The ulceration was surgically excised and reconstructed with a thoracodorsal axial pattern flap. No further complications developed. All the dogs were clinically healthy after a median follow-up of 16 months. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Surgical excision of canine elbow hygroma is an effective technique that appears to have fewer postoperative complications than Penrose drain placement. © 2020 British Small Animal Veterinary Association.OBJECTIVE To compare pregnant Turkish women and Syrian refugee women in terms of demographic data and obstetric and neonatal outcomes. METHODS In a retrospective study, the records of Turkish women and Syrian refugee women who gave birth at the Health Sciences University Kocaeli Derince Training and Research Hospital, Kocaeli, Turkey, between January 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017 were examined. Maternal characteristics and obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The study, which included 7950 Turkish women and 620 Syrian refugee women, found significant differences in maternal age according to nationality. The rate of normal delivery was significantly lower for the Turkish women at 51.6% (P=0.001) compared to 61.3% for the Syrian refugee women. The rate of delivery prior to 37 weeks of gestation was 1.8% for the Turkish women and 3.2% for the Syrian refugee women, indicating earlier delivery for the Syrian refugees than the Turkish women (P=0.017). A significant difference was found between the birth weights of infants born in the two groups (P=0.001). CONCLUSION According to the study results, Syrian refugees have a higher rate of adolescent birth and low-birth-weight neonates which could be attributed to poor care and insufficient nutrition during pregnancy while living as a refugee in Turkey. © 2020 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.Environmental temperature is one of the critical factors affecting fish development. Z-VAD-FMK chemical structure The aim of this study was to examine the impact of three different rearing temperatures (16, 19 and 22°C) throughout the endogenous feeding phase of the Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii. This was performed by assessing (a) larval survival and growth; (b) immunofluorescence localization and expression of genes involved in muscle development and growth - myog and Igf1; and (c) stress status through the expression of thermal stress genes - Hsp70, Hsp90α and Hsp90β - and whole body cortisol. Overall survival rate and larval weight did not differ significantly across temperatures. Larvae subjected to 22°C showed faster absorption of the yolk-sac than larvae subjected to 19 or 16°C. Both at schooling and at the end of the trial, larvae reared at 16°C showed significantly lower levels of cortisol than those reared at 19 or 22°C. IGF-1 immunopositivity was particularly evident in red muscle at schooling stage in all temperatures. The expression of all Hsps as well as the myog and Igf1 genes was statistically higher in larvae reared at 16°C but limited to the schooling stage. Cortisol levels were higher in larvae at 22°C, probably because of the higher metabolism demand rather than a stress response. The observed apparent incongruity between Hsps gene expression and cortisol levels could be due to the lack of a mature system. Further studies are necessary, especially regarding the exogenous feeding phase, in order to better understand if this species is actually sensitive to thermal stress. © 2020 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.The survival of peripheral T cells is dependent on their access to peripheral LNs (pLNs) and stimulation by IL-7. In pLNs fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs) and lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) produce IL-7 suggesting their contribution to the IL-7-dependent survival of T cells. However, IL-7 production is detectable in multiple organs and is not restricted to pLNs. This raises the question whether pLN-derived IL-7 is required for the maintenance of peripheral T cell homeostasis. Here, we show that numbers of naive T cells (TN ) remain unaffected in pLNs and spleen of mice lacking Il7 gene activity in pLN FRCs, LECs, or both. In contrast, frequencies of central memory T cells (TCM ) are reduced in FRC-specific IL-7 KO mice. Thus, steady state IL-7 production by pLN FRCs is critical for the maintenance of TCM , but not TN , indicating that both T cell subsets colonize different ecological niches in vivo. © 2020 The Authors.
