A commonality across results concerns the wide variety of data collection and analytical practices, along with a lack of consistency between articles about what is reported. We use these results, along with relevant literature from the fields of ecological momentary assessment and network analysis, to formulate recommendations on what type of data is suited for temporal network analyses as well as optimal methods to preprocess and analyze data. As the field is new, we also discuss key future steps to help usher the field's progress forward and offer a reporting checklist to help researchers navigate conducting and reporting temporal network analyses.From the preference of one good over another, the strength of the preference cannot automatically be inferred. While money is the common denominator to assess the value of goods in humans, it appears difficult at first glance to put a price tag on the decisions of laboratory animals. Here we used consumer demand tests to measure how much work female mice expend to obtain access to different liquids. The mice could each choose between two liquids, one of which was free. The amount of work required to access the other liquid, by contrast, increased daily. In this way, the value of the liquid can be determined from a mouse's microeconomic perspective. The unique feature is that our test was carried out in a home-cage based setup. The mice lived in a group but could individually access the test-cage, which was connected to the home-cage via a gate. Thereby the mice were able to perform their task undisturbed by group members and on a self-chosen schedule with minimal influence by the experimenter. Our results show that the maximum number of nosepokes depends on the liquids presented. Mice worked incredibly hard for access to water while a bitter-tasting solution was offered for free whereas they made less nosepokes for sweetened liquids while water was offered for free. The results demonstrate that it is possible to perform automated and home-cage based consumer demand tests in order to ask the mice not only what they like best but also how strong their preference is.Sulforaphane (SFN) promotes protective effects in different cell types. Nonetheless, it remains to be clarified by which mechanism SFN exerts benefits in mammalian cells. Mitochondria are a major source of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and reactive species in nucleated cells. Mitochondrial impairment result in cellular redox biology disruption, bioenergetic status collapse, and inflammation. Evidence suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a role in neurological disorders. Since a cure was not discovered yet to some of these diseases, investigating strategies to promote mitochondrial protection is pharmacologically relevant and may improve life quality of patients suffering from these maladies. Natural molecules, such as SFN, are potent inducers of the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and, consequently, stimulate the expression of genes whose products, such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), induce cytoprotective actions in mammalian tissues. In this work, we investigated whether SFN (5 µM) would be capable to prevent the dysfunctions caused by chlorpyrifos (CPF) on the human dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, we examined the effects of a pretreatment with SFN at the same concentration on the mouse microglial BV2 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in an experimental model of neuroinflammation. SFN prevented the mitochondrial impairment and the neuroinflammation caused by the chemical stressors in both cell types. Inhibition of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) suppressed the mitochondrial protection and anti-inflammatory action afforded by SFN in this experimental model. Overall, SFN promoted cytoprotection by a mechanism dependent on the HO-1 enzyme in the SH-SY5Y and BV2 cells.
Obesity is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Bariatric surgery (BS) improves the clinical and metabolic profile. Retinal caliber changes could precede cardiovascular events. Different studies have shown an improvement in retinal caliber after BS. The aim of this study was to examine retinal caliber and other cardiovascular target organ damage before and after BS.
Monocentric, prospective cohort study at the Montpellier University Hospital. Biologic features, vessel stiffness, echocardiograph variables, and retinal caliber at baseline and 6 and 12months were assessed in consecutive patients with class 2 or 3 obesity undergoing BS. A mixed linear model adjusted for age and sex was used.
We included 88 patients (75 women). The mean (SD) age was 43years (11) and mean (SD) baseline weight 117 (21) Kg. Mean changes in the first year after BS were - 5.1µm in central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE) (p < 0.0001), + 0.02 in arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR) (p < 0.0001), - 1.4mmol/L in glycemia (psessment of retinal vascular calibers may offer new insights into the pathophysiology of subclinical vascular processes.
Alcohol overconsumption remains one of the adverse effects associated with bariatric surgery. Many previous studies have used subjective methods to evaluate the prevalence of alcohol overconsumption. In 2018, Örebro University Hospital started to use phosphatidylethanol 160/181 (PEth) as a screening tool pre- and postbariatric surgery. Research exploring alcohol use after bariatric surgery assessed with PEth is scarce.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of alcohol overconsumption in bariatric surgery patients measured 2years postoperatively with PEth and to identify possible risk factors associated with alcohol overconsumption.
This was a register-based retrospective, observational cohort study with PEth results collected from medical records at Örebro University Hospital. Patients who underwent bariatric surgery between January 2016 and June 2019 and who were registered in the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry (SOReg) were included.
PEth results from 410 bariatric surgery patients were identified. PEth values significantly increased from baseline to the postoperative follow-up (from 3.0% before surgery to 8.3% at the 2-year follow-up). In a univariate logistic regression analysis, the associated risk factors were found to be male sex (odds ratio, OR 2.14), older age (OR 1.06), and hypertension (OR 3.32).
The prevalence of alcohol overconsumption measured with PEth 2years after bariatric surgery was 8.3% and was associated with male sex, older age, and hypertension. More studies are needed to validate the results of this study because it is not known whether PEth values are affected by bariatric surgery.

Bariatric endoscopic procedures are emerging as alternatives to bariatric surgical procedures. This study aimed to assess if a natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) bariatric procedure could be converted to a surgical duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
This 12-week prospective study compared 4 test pigs to 3 control (no procedures) pigs aged 3months at baseline. The test pigs received a fully endoscopic NOTES-based bypass including measurement of the bypassed limb and creation of a gastrojejunal anastomosis (GJA) using gastrojejunal lumen-apposing metal stents (GJ-LAMS) at Week 0, placement of a duodenal exclusion device (DED) at Week 2, and randomization to DJB or SG surgery at Week 8 with subsequent 4-week follow-up. At Week 12, the pigs were sacrificed and necropsy was performed.
Endoscopic procedures were technically successful. One pig did not receive a DED due to early GJ-LAMS migration leading to premature closure of the GJA. At Week 8, all 4 pigs were doing well, and the remaining 3 GJ-LAMS and 3 DEDs were uneventfully endoscopically removed. Two one-anastomosis DJB were performed, and 2 SG were performed, closing in one case the site of the previous GJA. The surgical procedures were technically feasible and uneventful during follow-up. Necropsy assessments showed no local or peritoneal inflammation or abscess and no leakage or fistula.

However, a head-to-head comparison study of severe mental disorders and dementia risk is lacking. This study was a retrospective analysis from Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. In the current study, we included 14,137, 14,138, and 14,137 patients aged 45-69 years diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, respectively, between 2001 and 2009 and 42,412 matched controls. Four groups were age-matched based by age of identification. Any dementia, including Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia, was diagnosed from the identification date to the end of 2011. Alzheimer disease was more likely in patients with bipolar disorder (hazard ratio [HR] 10.37, 95% confidence interval [CI] 6.93-15.52) and major depression (HR 8.92, 95% CI 5.93-13.41) than in those with schizophrenia (HR 4.50, 95% CI 2.84-7.13) and in controls. The likelihood of developing vascular dementia during the follow-up period was greater in patients with schizophrenia (HR 4.55, 95% CI 3.14-6.59) and bipolar disorder (HR 4.45, 95% CI 3.13-6.31) than in those with major depression (HR 3.18, 95% CI 2.21-4.58) and in controls. However, the overlapped CIs indicated the non-significant between-category differences. There was an increased risk of Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia in all groups compared with controls. For Alzheimer disease risk was greater bipolar and depression compared with schizophrenia while for vascular dementia risk was greater for bipolar and schizophrenia compared with depression. Our findings may encourage clinicians to closely monitor the trajectory of cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.
Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) is an inherited disease, linked with abnormalities in the NF-2 gene, which is located on chromosome 22 and involved in merlin production. Many craniospinal tumors are common in individuals with NF-2. We present a case of NF-2 with the rapid symptomatic progression of multiple craniospinal tumors.
A 12-year-old male complained of headache and hearing impairment in the right ear for 7months. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a right frontal meningioma, bilateral vestibular and trigeminal schwannomas, and a brainstem tumor. He was diagnosed with NF-2 and underwent brain surgery and radiotherapy for chordoid meningioma. He complained of right leg motor weakness 5months post-surgery. The spine MRI showed multiple heterogeneously enhanced masses spreading over the entire spinal cord. UNC8153 The symptomatic intradural extramedullary mass at the cervicothoracic area was removed and the histological finding was schwannoma. His leg motor weakness was relieved after surgery. At the 6-month follow-up, brain MRI revealed the progression of the vestibular schwannoma, trigeminal schwannoma, and brainstem tumor.
