Introduced in 2008, there is a growing body of literature establishing it as a safe endoscopic approach for thyroid procedures. While it is not yet widely practiced, it is quickly growing in popularity. As more surgeons begin to add this technique to their repertoire the question of the learning curve has to be examined.

Case series from the initial TOETVA operations of four surgeons at three different hospitals were examined. Binomial and ordinal logistic regression were used to characterize the changes in complication rate and severity as they related to case number in the series. Statistics were performed in Minitab and SAS.

Each surgeon performed between 23 and 40 TOETVA operations for a total of 130 cases. Binary logistic regression shows a negative relationship between case number and complication rate (P < 0.001, Odds Ratio 0.91). Ordinal logistic regression shows a negative relationship between case number and complication severity (P < 0.001, Odds Ratio 1.07). The maximum slope of improvement of complication rate occurred at case number 12.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is becoming widely popular as a less invasive treatment option for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. However, data on long-term survival after esophageal ESD in patients with severe comorbidities are limited. This study aimed to evaluate long-term survival after ESD in such patients.

Altogether, 584 consecutive patients underwent esophageal ESD at our institution from May 2004 to September 2016. Based on the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS) classification system, patients were grouped according to severe (ASA-PS ≥ 3) or non-severe comorbidities (ASA-PS 1/2). The overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and risk factors for mortality were compared between the groups using a propensity score matching analysis.

In a matched cohort of 69 pairs, the 5-year OS rate was poorer in ASA-PS 3 patients than in ASA-PS 1/2 patients (63.9% vs. 92.5%, P < 0.01), while the 5-year DSS rate was similar between the groups (100% vs. 100%). The mortality rate was significantly higher in ASA-PS 3 patients than in ASA-PS 1/2 patients (hazard ratio 3.47; 95% confidence interval 1.79-6.74; P < 0.01). Death due to exacerbation of comorbidities was significantly more frequent in ASA-PS 3 patients than in ASA-PS 1/2 patients (42.4% vs. 8.3%, P < 0.04).

Hence, the NGS technique is highly useful to analyze a sufficiently higher number of SNPs simultaneously. Though the technique is in its nascent stage, an attempt has been made to assess its usability in the central Indian population by analyzing 124 SNPs (90 autosomal and 34 Y-chromosome) in 95 individuals. Various quality parameters such as locus balance, locus strand balance, heterozygosity balance, and noise level showed a good quality sequence obtained from the Ion GeneStudio S5 instrument. The widespread prevalence of COVID-19 has disrupted the social life, physical function, and daily activities of patients, leading to reduced quality of their lives. Because of the nature of this disease and its comprehensive impact on patients' lives, a follow-up based on the conditions of these patients is necessary. This study was conducted to determine the impact of nurse education and telephone follow-up (telenursing) on the quality of life of COVID-19 patients.

This quasi-experimental study included 120 COVID-19 patients discharged from 22nd-Bahman Hospital in Khaf city and was conducted over 6 months from July 20, 2020, to December 20, 2020. The participants were selected by convenience sampling method and were assigned into two matching groups. The training was delivered through telenursing based on the quality of life criteria for 1 month in the intervention group. The controls did not receive any intervention. Both groups completed the 36-item SF health survey before and 1 month after the intervention.

The two groups were not significantly different regarding the quality of life mean scores at baseline (p = 0.61). However, after the intervention, the mean and standard deviation of the total life quality score was significantly different between the control and intervention groups (63.62 ± 3.93 versus 72.62 ± 3.51, p <0.001).

To be more specific, to fully grasp the influence of mercaptan molecules on the chemical and electronic features of Ca12O12 nanocluster, some parameters, namely, charge transfer of natural bond orbital, molecular electrostatic potential, binding energies, and frontier molecular orbitals, are computed. The interaction between CH4S molecule and calcium atoms of Ca12O12 nanocluster through the sulfur head is strong. This strong interaction leads to a considerable transfer of charge from CH4S to the nanocluster. After mercaptan adsorption, the existing energy gap between two levels, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the nanostructure, dropped by 2.21 eV, illustrating that the dissociation process has extensively increased the electrical conductance of nanostructure. Lactoferrin (Lf) is a natural glycoprotein with immunomodulatory and anticancer activities. We produced a novel recombinant human Lf (rhLf) that exhibits glycosylation profile compatible with the natural hLf for potential parenteral therapeutic applications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer effects of this novel rhLf in human lung adenocarcinoma cells and its mechanisms of action. The results showed a concentration-dependent inhibition of A549 cancer cell growth in response to rhLf. Treatment with 1 mg/ml of rhLf for 24 h and 72 h resulted in a significant inhibition of cancer cell growth by 32% and 25%, respectively. Moreover, rhLf increased fourfold the percentage of early and late apoptotic cells compared to the control. This effect was accompanied by increased levels of caspase-3 activity and cell cycle arrest at the S phase in rhLf-treated cancer cells.
