The Band Toto Asia

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded performances.





After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour to support the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a serious case of laryngitis which hampered his singing.
