Global health education is important during residency training in exposing doctors to conditions that are not common in the United States and developing their awareness of global health care disparities. Most medical decisions are based on results from anatomic or clinical pathology laboratories, which are essential services for appropriate medical care in international settings. Nevertheless, US pathology residency trainees have limited global health exposure and thus are rarely exposed to diagnostic services in these settings. Moreover, literature documenting what is needed to create a global health elective in pathology is limited.

We designed an international pathology elective in Trinidad and Tobago involving one main public hospital site and several off-site laboratories. Objectives and goals were established before the rotation. Apart from daily mentor-led education sessions, the trainee participated in teaching, quality improvement projects, and cultural experiences. Engagement with medical officers, personnel staff, and people in the community was encouraged.Results Challenges encountered included funding, transportation, limited laboratory resources, medical registration, and malpractice insurance. These were mitigated through carefully planned steps, including communicating with registration bodies and liaising with pathology organizations for funding.

Overall, the global health rotation was successful. We provide a detailed roadmap for other pathology training programs interested in establishing similar global health electives.

This study examined the perspectives on the use of data visualizations and identified key features seriously ill children, their parents, and clinicians prefer to see when visualizing symptom data obtained from mobile health technologies (an Apple Watch and smartphone symptom app).

Children with serious illness and their parents were enrolled into a symptom monitoring study then a subset was interviewed for this study. A study team member created symptom data visualizations using the pediatric participant's mobile technology data. buy Bardoxolone Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of participants (n = 14 children; n = 14 parents). In addition, a convenience sample of clinicians (n = 30) completed surveys. Pediatric and parent participants shared their preferences and perspectives on the symptom visualizations.

We identified 3 themes from the pediatric and parent participant interviews increased symptom awareness, communication, and interpretability of the symptom visualizations. Clinicians preferred pie charts and simple bar charts for their ease of interpretation and ability to be used as communication tools. Most clinicians would prefer to see symptom visualizations in the electronic health record.

Mobile health tools offer a unique opportunity to obtain patient-generated health data. Effective, concise symptom visualizations can be used to synthesize key clinical information to inform clinical decisions and promote patient-clinician communication to enhance symptom management.

Effectively visualizing complex mobile health data can enhance understanding of symptom dynamics and promote patient-clinician communication, leading to tailored personalized symptom management strategies.Epidemiologic studies often rely on questionnaire data, exposure measurement tools, and/or biomarkers to identify risk factors and the underlying carcinogenic processes. An emerging and promising complementary approach to investigate cancer etiology is the study of somatic "mutational signatures" that endogenous and exogenous processes imprint on the cellular genome. These signatures can be identified from a complex web of somatic mutations thanks to advances in DNA sequencing technology and analytical algorithms. This approach is at the core of the Sherlock-Lung study (2018-ongoing), a retrospective case-only study of over 2,000 lung cancers in never-smokers (LCINS), using different patterns of mutations observed within LCINS tumors to trace back possible exposures or endogenous processes. Whole genome and transcriptome sequencing, genome-wide methylation, microbiome, and other analyses are integrated with data from histological and radiological imaging, lifestyle, demographic characteristics, environmental and occupational exposures, and medical records to classify LCINS into subtypes that could reveal distinct risk factors. To date, we have received samples and data from 1,370 LCINS cases from 17 study sites worldwide and whole-genome sequencing has been completed on 1,257 samples. Here, we present the Sherlock-Lung study design and analytical strategy, also illustrating some empirical challenges and the potential for this approach in future epidemiologic studies.Cassava storage roots are among the most important root crops worldwide, and represent one of the most consumed staple foods in sub-Saharan Africa. The vegetatively propagated tropical shrub can form many starchy tuberous roots from its stem. These storage roots are formed through the activation of secondary root growth processes. However, the underlying genetic regulation of storage root development is largely unknown. Here we report distinct structural and transcriptional changes occurring during the early phases of storage root development. A pronounced increase in auxin-related transcripts and the transcriptional activation of secondary growth factors, as well as a decrease in gibberellin-related transcripts were observed during the early stages of secondary root growth. This was accompanied by increased cell wall biosynthesis, most notably increased during the initial xylem expansion within the root vasculature. Starch storage metabolism was activated only after the formation of the vascular cambium. The formation of non-lignified xylem parenchyma cells and the activation of starch storage metabolism coincided with increased expression of the KNOX/BEL genes KNAT1, PENNYWISE, and POUND-FOOLISH, indicating their importance for proper xylem parenchyma function.
