Menstrual cycle dysfunction is associated with insulin resistance, a key feature early in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. However, the evidence linking irregular and long menstrual cycles with type 2 diabetes is scarce and inconsistent.

Although family members of patients who die in the intensive care unit commonly experience long-term psychological distress, end-of-life bereavement support programs for such relatives are uncommon. Whether art influences the grief experience of families is largely unexplored.

To explore the influence of personalized paintings created to honor deceased critically ill patients on family members' bereavement experience.

A qualitative descriptive analysis was conducted of semistructured interviews of grieving relatives who received a painting after the death of their loved one. The deceased patients were from a 21-bed medical-surgical intensive care unit. Eleven families were invited to receive a painting, of whom 1 family declined. A total of 22 family members of 10 patients who died in the intensive care unit were interviewed in the study between July 11, 2017, and May 19, 2019.

Patients were enrolled in an end-of-life care program that elicits and implements wishes of patients and their families to brcipants indicated that the paintings validated that the patient was remembered, helped families feel less alone during a time of grief, honored the loved one's life, and enhanced connections between family members and clinicians.

However, limitations exist in the implementation of concatenated and summary coalescent approaches, and Bayesian and full coalescent inference methods may not yet be feasible for computation of phylogeny using complicated models and large datasets. Here, we explored methodological (e.g., optimality criteria, character sampling, model selection) and biological (e.g., heterotachy, branch length heterogeneity) sources of systematic error that can result in biased or incorrect parameter estimates when reconstructing phylogeny by using the gadiform fishes as a model clade. Gadiformes include some of the most economically important fishes in the world (e.g., Cods, Hakes, and Rattails). Despite many attempts, a robust higher-level phylogenetic framework was lacking due to limited character and taxonomic sampling, particularly from several species-poor families that have been recalcitrant to phylogenetic placem and yield high support for phylogenetic relationships.

The long-term effect of deployment on pulmonary function in this population is unknown. This study sought to determine the effect of deployment on post-deployment pulmonary function in active duty military personnel with asthma.

A retrospective chart review of active duty military personnel with deployment to southwest Asia and an ICD-9 diagnosis of asthma with documented pre- and post-deployment spirometry was performed.

A total of 642 active duty individuals with a diagnosis of asthma and documented spirometry with deployment to southwest Asia between 2006 and 2015 were identified. Of these, 76 individuals were identified with pre- and post-deployment spirometry. There was no significant change in the post-deployment forced expiratory volume at 1 second (% predicted), from 86.0 ± 14.8 to 87.6 ± 14.4 (P = .30). There was no significant change in post-deployment forced vital capacity (% predicted), from 93.8 ± 12.4 to 94.9 ± 12.1 (P = .42). The absolute change in forced expiratory volume at 1 second (L) after bronchodilator administration was decreased from pre-deployment to post-deployment (+0.31 ± 0.26 to +0.16 ± 0.23; P = .02).

Actaea racemosa (Black cohosh) herbal dietary supplements are commonly used to treat menopausal symptoms in women. However, there is a considerable risk of contamination of A. racemosa herbal products in the natural health product (NHP) industry, impacting potential efficacy. Authentication of A. racemosa products is challenging because of the standard, multi-part analytical chemistry methods that may be too costly and not appropriate for both raw and finished products.

In this paper, we discuss about developing and validating quick alternative biotechnology methods to authenticate A. racemosa herbal dietary supplements, based on the use of a species-specific hydrolysis PCR probe assay.

A qPCR based species-specific hydrolysis probe assay was designed, validated, and optimized for precisely identifying the species of interest using the following analytical validation criteria (1) specificity (accuracy) in determining the target species ingredient, while not identifying other non-target species, (2) sensitivity in detecting the smallest amount of the target material, and (3) reliability (repeatability and reproducibility) in detecting the target species in raw materials on a real-time PCR platform.

The results show that the species-specific hydrolysis probe assay was successfully developed for the raw materials and powders of A. racemosa. The specificity of the test was 100% to the target species. The efficiency of the assay was observed to be 99%, and the reliability of the assay was 100% for the raw/starting and powder materials.

Wing reduction and flight loss have apparently evolved repeatedly in montane insect assemblages, and have been suggested as important drivers of hexapod diversification. We test this hypothesis using genomic analyses of a widespread wing-polymorphic stonefly species complex in New Zealand. We identified over 50,000 polymorphic genetic markers generated across almost 200 Zelandoperla fenestrata stonefly specimens using a newly generated plecopteran reference genome, to reveal widespread parallel speciation between sympatric full-winged and wing-reduced ecotypes. Rather than the existence of a single, widespread, flightless taxon (Zelandoperla pennulata), evolutionary genomic data reveal that wing-reduced upland lineages have speciated repeatedly and independently from full-winged Z. fenestrata. This repeated evolution of reproductive isolation between local ecotype pairs that lack mitochondrial DNA differentiation suggests that ecological speciation has evolved recently. A cluster of outlier SNPs detected in independently wing-reduced lineages, tightly linked in an approximately 85 kb genomic region that includes the developmental 'supergene' doublesex, suggests that this 'island of divergence' may play a key role in rapid ecological speciation.
