Blood supply remains one of the obstacles to large bone tissue engineering. This study aimed to generate vascularized bone tissue by inducing axial vascularization into a construct combining natural coral scaffold and a bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) sheet.

Isolated BMSCs were cultured to form an osteogenic cell sheet using a continuous culture method. Natural coral scaffolds were prepared into customized shape with a cylinder of 20 mm length, 8 mm in outer diameter and 5 mm in inner diameter. Then, the freed superficial inferior epigastric vessel of rabbits was first wrapped with a cell sheet, and then inserted into the central passage of the scaffold, after being wrapped with another cell sheet, the complexes were implanted subcutaneously into a rabbit groin area. In contrast, the sheet-scaffold construct that implanted into groin subcutaneous area of the other side of the same rabbit with the distal end of the blood vessel was ligated, which was considered as control. New bone and vascularization formation were evaluated at 12 weeks postoperatively.

The volume of new bone formation and amount of capillary infiltration in the vascular circulation group were significantly greater than that in the vascular ligation group, which suggested that insertion of axial vessels could significantly promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis of the tissue-engineered bone.

These findings indicate that inserting an arteriovenous bundle into the constructs of mesenchymal stem cell sheet and coral has great potential for clinical applications to repair large bone defects.

Rarely, ABCs can manifest in the head and neck (HNABC). The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on HNABC. selleck This review includes case reports and case series on ABCs manifesting in the head and neck region published in the English language. All cases identified via PubMed were analyzed individually. Articles were included according to specified eligibility criteria. The total number of cases analyzed were 72 (39 case reports; 33 case series). The average age at the time of HNABC diagnosis was 19.1 years (range 0.42-62 years). The ratio of prevalence by gender affected exhibited an even 11 male-to-female split. CT in combination with MRI proved to be the most prevalent imaging modality utilized (37.2%). HNABC was most commonly detected in the mandible (37.1%), followed by the sinus (14.3%) and cranium (11.4%). On the other hand, the 'Spear Horizon' offers an excellent opportunity to approach hominin spatial behavior, thanks to the richness of the archeological assemblage, its exceptional preservation, and the vast expanse of the excavated surface. Analyzing how space was used is essential for understanding hominin behavior at this unique open-air site and, from a wider perspective, for approaching how humans adapted to interglacial environments. In this article, we present an exhaustive spatial study of the complete Schöningen 13II-4 'Spear Horizon' faunal assemblage and its archeological context, combining zooarcheology and spatial analysis through the extensive application of geographic information systems. Our results indicate the existence of different activity areas related to changes in the position of the shoreline due to fluctuations of water table levels of the Schöningen paleolake. These activity areas were likely used on a seasonal basis, whereas the spatial patterning observed in the distribution of faunal remains suggests a diversity of behavioral strategies in terms of intensity and/or duration of occupations. This study refines previous interpretations of the site and reconstructs human behavioral adaptations and the occupational changing lakeland environment during the Middle Pleistocene in Europe.The relationship between the environment and human activities during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 is important for understanding the origins of modern humans (Homo sapiens) in East Asia, an area where various hypotheses of human origins have been vigorously debated over the past three decades. Unfortunately, only a handful of Paleolithic sites date to MIS 4 in East Asia, hampering our understanding of how environmental changes affected human activities during this time period. Here, we used stratigraphic correlation analysis and optically stimulated luminescence to date the Loufangzi site, an important Paleolithic site in North China that has had an unreliable chronology. Pollen analysis, grain size, and magnetic susceptibility were also used to reconstruct environmental conditions at the Loufangzi site area. Our results show that (1) the age of the upper culture layer of the Loufangzi site is bracketed between ∼70 ka and ∼60 ka and dates to MIS 4 and (2) the regional vegetation from MIS 5 to MIS 4 to MIS 3 was mainly dominated by forest steppe, desert steppe/desert, and steppe, respectively, indicating harsh environmental conditions during MIS 4. Combined with the discovery of Mousterian-like scrapers in the upper culture layer of MIS 4, our results challenge the view that the area was unsuitable for human survival during the Last Glacial period and instead suggest that humans used new technologies to increase their resilience to the cooling climate.
