Rare earth elements, which are extensively used in environmental protection, medicine, food, aerospace and other fields, have attracted widespread attention in recent years. However, the effect on atherosclerosis and its biological mechanism remains unclear. To elucidate these problems, here we performed a study that Apolipoprotein E-deficient mice were fed with high-fat diet to promote the development of atherosclerosis, meanwhile, mice were received 0.1, 0.2, 1.0, 2.0 mg/kg lanthanum nitrate (La(NO3)3) for 12 weeks. The results showed that La(NO3)3 prominently inhibited aorta morphological alternations by histopathological examination. Meanwhile, La(NO3)3 regulated serum lipids, including reducing total cholesterol and increasing high-density lipoprotein. Moreover, the oxidative stress was alleviated by La(NO3)3 intervention through enhancing superoxide dismutase and glutathione, and decreasing malondialdehyde levels. In addition, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis showed La(NO3)3 could ameliorate the dysfunction of vascular endothelium with declined endothelin-1 and increased prostacyclin. Furthermore, Western blot analysis indicated that La(NO3)3 significantly down-regulated inflammation-mediated proteins including phosphorylated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p-p38 MAPK), monocyte chemo-attractant protein, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65), tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and interleukin-1β, whereas up-regulated the inhibitor of NF-κB protein. In conclusion, La(NO3)3 ameliorates atherosclerosis by regulating lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory response in mice. The potential mechanism associates with the inhibition of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Many children and youth living in residential units have experienced multiple traumas that may result in challenging behaviors. Among a range of professional responses, staff may use restraint, seclusion and time-out to manage these behaviors.

To enhance our understanding of these restrictive interventions in residential units as a means of improving professional practices involving children and youth in out-of-home care.

Administrative data were used. Restrictive intervention data for 324 children and youth (29 units) over a 6-month period were extracted.

Latent profile analysis was used to identify subgroups of children and youth with distinct restrictive intervention profiles. Children and youth in these profiles were compared on individual (age, sex, ethnic group, length of stay in unit, reasons for services) and environmental characteristics (unit type, type of services, specialized designation).

Restrictive interventions, especially time-outs, were frequent (5136 interventions; 69% time-outs), yet approximately half of the sample did not experience any. Restraints, seclusions and time-outs differed in frequency, duration and reason for use. A two-profile model was favored for children and youth who were subjected to restrictive interventions (classification accuracy = 94%). Children and youth in these two profiles differed from each other, and from those not subjected to restrictive interventions, on numerous individual and environmental characteristics.

The use of restrictive interventions is frequent, and attention should be paid to individual and environmental risk factors identified in this study (i.e., being a boy, non-Caucasian, taken into care for neglect, and having a longer stay in unit).

To monitor stability of care, the proportion of children in England who have experienced three or more placements in the preceding 12-month period is published in government statistics. However, these annual snapshots cannot capture the complexity and heterogeneity of children's longitudinal care histories.

To describe the stability of care histories from birth to age 18 for children in England using a national administrative social care dataset, the Children Looked After return (CLA).

We analyzed CLA data for a large, representative sample of children born between 1992 and 1994 (N = 16,000).

Using sequence analysis methods, we identified distinct patterns of stability, based on the number, duration, and timing of care placements throughout childhood.

Although care histories were varied, six distinct patterns of stability were evident including; adolescent 1

entries (17.6%), long-term complex care (13.1%) and early intervention (6.9%). Overall, most children (58.4%) had a care history that we clasr understand and address the needs of looked after children.A genomic resource of drought stress responsive genes/ESTs was generated using Suppression Subtractive Hybridization (SSH) approach in a drought stress tolerant Pennisetum glaucum genotype 841B. Lys05 Fifty five days old plants were subjected to drought stress after withholding water for different time intervals (10 days, 15 days, 20 days and 25 days). A forward subtractive cDNA library was prepared from isolated RNA of leaf tissue. Differential gene expression under drought stress was validated for selected nine contigs by RT-qPCR. A transcript homologous to Setaria italica ASR3 upregulated under drought stress was isolated from genotype 841B and characterized. Heterologous expression of PgASR3 was validated in Arabidopsis and confirmed under multiple abiotic stress conditions. A total of four independent transgenic lines overexpressing gene PgASR3 were analyzed by Southern blot at T1 stage. For drought stress tolerance, three independent lines (T2 stage) were analyzed by biochemical and physiological assays at seedling stage. The growth rate (shoot and root length) of transgenic seedlings improved as compared to WT seedling under differenct abiotic stress conditions. The three transgenic lines were also validated for drought stress tolerance and RT-qPCR analysis, at maturity stage. Under drought stress conditions, the mature transgenic lines showed higher levels of RWC, chlorophyll and proline but lower levels of MDA as compared to WT plants. PgASR3 gene isolated and validated in this study can be utilized for developing abiotic stress tolerant crops.
