Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic disorder of the upper gastrointestinal tract that currently lacks substantially effective therapy options.

To evaluate the feasibility and potential impact on FD symptoms and well-being of a fully automated gut-directed hypnosis intervention delivered via audio recordings.

FD patients were enrolled at a single medical center and given access to a password-protected website where they completed 7 bi-weekly audio-recorded hypnosis sessions over a 3-month period. Study questionnaires including the Patient assessment of upper gastrointestinal symptom severity index, Short-Form Nepean Dyspepsia Index, the Visceral Sensitivity Index, and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) were completed online pre-treatment, mid-treatment, post-treatment and at 3-month follow-up.

Of 23 enrolled patients (18 females; mean age = 38years), 96% completed the entire treatment program and 3-month follow-up. Intention-to-treat analyses showed significant improvement at both end of treatmentvention has high potential as adjunctive therapy for FD and warrants further investigation in a randomized controlled trial.

Esophageal foreign body impaction is the most common cause of endoscopic emergency. However, there are limited available data on delayed endoscopic management of esophageal sharp-pointed food impaction.

To investigate cases of esophageal sharp-pointed food impaction with endoscopic removal findings.

This single-center retrospective study collected medical records to identify patients with esophageal sharp-pointed food impaction who underwent endoscopic removal between April 2018 and April 2020. The patients were divided into the early (endoscopic removal <12h) and delayed intervention (>12h) cohorts.

Overall, 133 and 696 patients received early and delayed intervention, respectively. The success rate of endoscopic foreign body removal was 96.45%. The most common foreign body was fish bone (66.90%), and the most common shape was "I" (56.26%). Patients from the delayed intervention cohort received general anesthesia with a higher risk for perforation, and no foreign body was identified. The duration of endoscopy, distance between the foreign body/wound and the incisor, and longest diameter of the foreign body were not different between the groups. In multivariate analysis, male sex (odds ratio = 1.792 [1.159, 2.771]; P = 0.009), longer duration of impaction (odds ratio = 2.212 [1.121, 4.365]; P = 0.022) and endoscopy (odds ratio = 1.502 [1.253, 1.800]; P < 0.001), and longest diameter of the foreign body (odds ratio = 1.632 [1.329, 2.003]; P < 0.001) were associated with a higher incidence of perforation in patients with foreign body impaction.

I reconstruct the research trajectory of a group of neurobiologists in the United States, with a focus on the experimental practices they adopted while building this animal model. Providing a microhistory of this decade-long undertaking, I show that what drove the development of the model in practice was a serendipitous finding about infants' response to maternal separation. Detected inadvertently, the pup's separation response acquired an epistemic significance of its own and reoriented the experimental system towards unanticipated paths. To explain this intriguing phenomenon, the neurobiologists kept on refining their material manipulations and stabilizing their experimental outcomes. They thus established a series of causal relationships that connected dysregulations of the infant's physiological systems to disruptions in maternal care. As important as this interactive stabilization of technique and objects in the laboratory was how the researchers theorized the network of relationships derived from this technically constituted objectivity. Highlighting the practice-driven aspects of model-building, I demonstrate that what facilitated this theoretical process was an integrated design of complementary experiments. The outcome of each separate experiment of the research program came to bear upon the outcomes of other experiments, informing the development of future manipulations. It was this strategically driven integration process that allowed the experimenters to build expanding networks of causal relationships and consolidate them into a neurobiological theory.

Physical activity is recommended to cancer survivors by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is associated with improved survival after colorectal cancer. It remains unclear whether having a stoma is a barrier for an active lifestyle. We examined the level of physical activity and explored factors impacting physical activity in survivors with a stoma.

A total of 1265 (65%) patients in the Danish Stoma Database completed a multidimensional survey. Physical activity of moderate- and vigorous-intensity was assessed using two validated questions. Based on WHO guidelines, physical activity was categorised into 'Meeting' or 'Not Meeting' recommendations. Multivariate regression analysis, adjusting for potential confounders, provided odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for factors' association with'Not Meeting' guideline recommendations.

In total, 571 patients with colorectal cancer reported on physical activity at a median of 4.3years (interquartile range 3.1-5.8) after stoma surgery. Two hundred ninety-three patients (51%) were 'Meeting recommendations' and 63% of them were 'Highly active'. Two hundred seventy-eight were 'Not meeting' recommendations (49%). Of the factors analysed, patients without support garment were more likely (OR 1.72 [95% CI 1.16; 2.54] not to meet guideline recommendations. We found no association between stoma type, surgical procedure, parastomal bulging and 'problematic stoma' and level of physical activity, respectively.

The magnetosomes (1 and 2 mg/ml) were conjugated with VP28 antibody (0.025-10 ng/µl), as confirmed by spectroscopy. The magnetosome-antibody conjugate was used to detect the VP28 antigen. The binding of antigen to the magnetosome-antibody complex resulted in a change in absorbance.
