Studies have reported that both of DEHP and ELF-EMFs could promote cell proliferation which is related with adverse bioeffects. In this study, we investigated whether there is the combined effect between DEHP and 50-Hz magnetic fields (MFs) on cell proliferation in human amniotic (FL) cells. Results revealed that the low-concentration DEHP (1 μM) could promote FL cell proliferation, whereas the high-dose DEHP (100 μM) inhibited cell proliferation. When FL cells were treated jointly by a 50-Hz, 0.2-mT MF and 0.1 μM DEHP, the proliferation rate of cells was significantly higher than that of single factor exposure. Additionally, co-exposure to under-threshold MF and DEHP could cooperatively activate protein kinase B (Akt), sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) and extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) in a cascade manner, and finally mediate cell proliferation. Taken together, the findings of this study indicated that the co-exposure to under-threshold MF and DEHP could jointly promote cell proliferation through activating proliferation-related signal pathway, which warned us that it should be cautious about assessing the underlying health hazards of co-exposure to MFs and DEHP at under-threshold levels.Benoxacor (BN) is a highly effective antidote of dichloroacetamide herbicides generally used to protect crops from herbicidal damage. As a commonly used agrochemical, this herbicide antidote is continuously discharged in watercourses thus causing toxicity to aquatic organisms, and ultimately leading to contamination of the food chain. To date, its potential toxicity to the cardiac development of aquatic organisms has not been evaluated. In the present study, we have selected the zebrafish as a model to study the impact of BN on embryonic developmental and cardiac toxicity. The zebrafish embryos were exposed in 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L BN from 5.5 to 72 h post-fertilization (hpf). The results indicated that the exposure to BN led to increased mortality and diminished heart and hatching rates in the embryos. BN exposure also brought pericardial edema (PE) and linear stretching of heart. Besides, exposure to BN induced an excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the zebrafish embryos and abnormal activities of the antioxidant enzymes, including catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Moreover, exposure to BN caused serious cardiac toxicity of the embryos, accompanied by abnormality of heart development- and apoptosis-related genes. Surprisingly, astaxanthin (ASTA), as a common antioxidant, was found to be able to partially rescue the cardiac toxicity caused by BN, which indicated that ROS are probably the major reason for the resulting cardiotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. The metabolites of pyrethroid and endosulfan were used to evaluate environmental toxicities using a representative animal model, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos in this study. The LC50 values in 3-phenoxy benzoic acid (3-PBA) and endosulfan sulfate (ES) were 1461 μg/L and 1459 μg/L, respectively. At the concentration of 2000 μg/L, spine curvature was observed in the ES-treated embryos. ES showed seizure-like events with an EC50 value of 354 μg/L. At the concentration of 1000 μg/L, the pericardial edema was observed in 3-PBA-treated embryos. The inhibition of heart development and the reduction of beating rates were observed in Tg(cmlc2EGFP) embryos after the exposure to 3-PBA. Down-regulation of the vmhc gene coding ventricular myosin during heart development was significantly found in 3-PBA-treated embryos at 48 hpf, but recovered afterward. It indicates that ventricular malformation occurred at the initial stage of 3-PBA exposure. Considered together, both 3-PBA and ES need public concerns with periodic monitoring of these metabolites in households and agricultural areas to prevent humans and environmental organisms from their unexpected attacks.How does aging affect facial attractiveness? We tested the hypothesis that people find older faces less attractive than younger faces, and furthermore, that these aging effects are modulated by the age and sex of the perceiver and by the specific kind of attractiveness judgment being made. Using empirical and computational network science methods, we confirmed that with increasing age, faces are perceived as less attractive. This effect was less pronounced in judgments made by older than younger and middle-aged perceivers, and more pronounced by men (especially for female faces) than women. Attractive older faces were perceived as elegant more than beautiful or gorgeous. Furthermore, network analyses revealed that older faces were more similar in attractiveness and were segregated from younger faces. These results indicate that perceivers tend to process older faces categorically when making attractiveness judgments. Attractiveness is not a monolithic construct. It varies by age, sex, and the dimensions of attractiveness being judged.
Exposure to poor air quality is a well-established factor for exacerbation of respiratory system diseases (RSDs); whether air pollutants are a cause of the development of RSD, however, remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between COVID-19 transport restrictions and hospital admissions because of RSD in Dublin city and county for 2020.
This was a retrospective population-based cohort.
Admission data were collected from the Health Service Executive Hospital In-patient Enquiry. Daily count of hospital admissions with Dublin city and county address with primary diagnosis of RSD was performed. The daily air nitrogen dioxide (NO
) data were obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
During the period of transport restrictions, there was a reduction in the annual mean NO
from 25μg/m
to 17μg/m
(P<0.001), and decreases in hospital admissions for RSD were observed. Among the 9934 patient episodes included in this study, the mean age at admission was 61.5 years, 57.8% were female (n=5744), and mean (standard deviation) length of stay was 7.5 (13.52) days.

Rosa davurica Pall., is mainly distributed in Korea, Japan, northeastern China, southeastern Siberia, and eastern Asia. It has been extensively used to treat various kinds of diseases by reason of the significant antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the pharmacological mechanism of Rosa davurica Pall. in atopic dermatitis (AD) is still ill defined and poorly understood. This study was to examine the anti-inflammatory effects and its mechanism on AD of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves (RDL).
To evaluate the therapeutic potential of RDL against AD, we have investigated the effects of RDL on the inflammatory reactions and the productions of inflammatory chemokines and cytokines that were induced by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)/interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in HaCaT cells. Futhermore, we examined the effects of RDL on the signaling pathways of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB). For the in-vivo studies, RDL extract was topically applied to the dinitroch that RDL may be served as a possible alternative therapeutic treatment for skin disorder such as AD.
To report the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of patients with cerebral sparganosis and concomitant epilepsy.
We retrospectively collected the clinical data of all patients with cerebral sparganosis and concomitant epilepsy who underwent lesionectomy as treatment at Xiangya Hospital, Central South University between January 2015 and August 2019. Seizure outcomes were evaluated according to the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) classification. ILAE classes 1 and 2 were defined as favorable seizure outcomes, whereas ILAE classes 3-6 were defined as unfavorable seizure outcomes.
Fifteen patients with cerebral sparganosis and concomitant epilepsy who underwent lesionectomy as treatment met the inclusion criteria. Live worms were surgical removed in 80 % of patients. With a mean follow-up of 2.4 ± 1.1 years, 66.7 % of patients demonstrated favorable seizure outcomes, with improvement of symptoms other than seizures. Longer seizure duration associated with unfavorable seizure outcomes.
Lesionectomy is an effective treatment for patients with cerebral sparganosis and concomitant epilepsy. Early surgical treatment may offer more benefits to such patients.
