In the past decades, a plethora of chiral organic materials have been studied and developed. Nanostructures have brought substantial advancement to the realization of organic-molecule-based devices, and the possibilities for solid-state light emission are very promising in view of potential applications. The chiral nanostructures discussed are related both to the way in which luminescence is generated and the way in which it is detected. KGaA, Weinheim.AIM To evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and muscular strength in a nationally representative sample of US youth. METHODS Participants (n = 3350) were 6- to 18-y-olds from 2011 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Relative handgrip strength was quantified using age- and sex-specific z-scores. Poor strength was defined as those less then 25th percentile. Multivariate general linear and logistic models were used to compare strength and poor strength status by clinically relevant groupings of 25OHD. RESULTS Approximately 20.2% of youth had 25OHD less then 50 nmol/L. Mean relative strength was highest for those at ≥75 nmol/L of 25OHD. The percentage of boys/girls with poor strength in the less then 50 nmol/L, 50-74.9 nmol/L and ≥75 nmol/L groups was 34.9%/32.3%, 25.8%/28.2% and 14.0%/15.8%, respectively. The odds of boys and girls with less then 50 nmol/L 25OHD having poor strength were 2.8 (95% CI 1.4, 5.5) and 3.4 (1.7, 6.8) times higher compared to those with ≥75 nmol/L, respectively. CONCLUSION Higher levels of circulating vitamin D were associated with higher relative strength, and poor strength was more prevalent when 25OHD was less then 75 nmol/L. These findings highlight the value of vitamin D for the muscle-bone unit and potential extraskeletal ramifications. © 2020 Foundation Acta Paediatrica. Whereas regional climatic factors may generate population synchrony (i.e., the Moran effect), local factors including the level of density-dependence may reduce the level of synchrony. Although divergences in the scaling of population synchrony and spatial environmental variation have been observed, the regulatory factors that underlie such mismatches are poorly understood. Few previous studies have investigated how density-dependent processes and population-specific responses to weather variation influence spatial synchrony at both local and regional scales. We addressed this issue in a pond-breeding amphibian, the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus). We used capture-recapture data collected through long-term surveys in five T. cristatus populations in Western Europe. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) has been shown to contribute to chemotherapy resistance in tumours under hypoxic conditions. This study was designed to explore the role and mechanism of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) in regulating DDP resistance in Rb cells under hypoxia and to validate whether HIF-1α was involved in this process. The interaction between HIF-1α and the promoter of ANRIL was analyzed using ChIP assay. Cell proliferation and apoptosis, as well as protein levels of drug resistance-related proteins (ABCG2 and MDR1) were examined to evaluate DDP resistance in Rb cells. The interactions between miR-328 and ANRIL as well as miR-328 and ABCG2 were analyzed using dual-luciferase reporter assays. Upon hypoxia, HIF-1α directly bound to the ANRIL promoter region to transcriptionally activate ANRIL. The hypoxia-induced ANRIL promoted Rb cell resistance to DDP, as evidenced by facilitation of cell proliferation, inhibition of cell apoptosis and upregulation of ABCG2 and MDR1. Mechanistically, ANRIL promoted Rb cell resistance to DDP by acting as a sponge of miR-328 to upregulate expression of ABCG2, which was confirmed as a direct target of miR-328. Collectively, hypoxia-induced ANRIL promotes DDP resistance in Rb cells by sponging miR-328 to upregulate ABCG2 expression. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.Phylogeography and zooarchaeology are largely separate disciplines, yet each interrogates relationships between humans and commensal species. Knowledge gained about human history from studies of four commensal rats (Rattus rattus, R. tanezumi, R. exulans, and R. norvegicus) is outlined, and open questions about their spread alongside humans are identified. Limitations of phylogeographic and zooarchaeological studies are highlighted, then how integration would increase understanding of species' demographic histories and resultant inferences about human societies is discussed. How rat expansions have informed the understanding of human migration, urban settlements, trade networks, and intra- and interspecific competition is reviewed. Since each rat species is associated with different human societies, they identify unique ecological and historical/cultural conditions that influenced their expansion. Finally, priority research areas including nuclear genome based phylogeographies are identified using archaeological evidence to understand R.
