The study aimed to investigate the role of spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) in cancer cells with compromised genomic integrity. Chromosomal instability (CIN) gives cancer cells an adaptive advantage. However, maintaining the balance of this instability is crucial for the survival of cancer cells as it could lead them to the mitotic catastrophe. Therefore, cancer cells adapt to the detrimental effects of CIN. We hypothesized that changes in SAC might be one such adaptation mechanism. The focus of the study was BUB1B, an integral part of the checkpoint.

In recent years, the concept of oligometastasis, which represents limited metastatic disease, has gained much interest. This study focuses on the oligometastatic recurrence (OLR) of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after esophagectomy.
From among 514 patients who underwent curative resection for ESCC at our hospital between April 2005 and December 2019, 97 patients with recurrence were enrolled in this study. OLR was defined as fewer than five recurrences in a single organ. We analyzed the prognostic factors for patients with OLR after curative resection of ESCC, especially the relationship between the recurrence pattern and prognosis according to treatment, defined as metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) and chemotherapy with local therapy as combined local therapy (CLT).
OLR was identified in 43 (44%) of the 97 patients with recurrence. The OLR group had a significantly better prognosis than the non-OLR group (P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis revealed that OLR was a prognostic factor after recurrence (P = 0.007) and that CLT after recurrence was the only prognostic factor in the OLR group (P = 0.024).
The findings of this study suggest that OLR is a prognostic factor after resection of ESCC and that CLT is a promising treatment modality for patients with OLR after curative resection of ESCC.

We recently revealed the preoperative lymphocyte C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) to be a new marker for predicting various outcomes in malignancies. The aim of our present study was to clarify the potential utility of the preoperative LCR for predicting the perioperative risk and oncological outcome in esophageal cancer patients.
We analyzed the preoperative LCR from 153 esophageal cancer patients to clarify its clinical relevance.
The preoperative LCR was significantly decreased in a stage-dependent manner, and a decreased preoperative LCR was significantly associated with the occurrence of postoperative surgical site infection. Esophageal cancer patients with a low LCR showed a poor outcome in both the overall survival and disease-free survival compared with those who had a high LCR. Multivariate analyses showed that a decreased LCR was an independent prognostic factor for both a poor overall survival and disease-free survival. A decreased preoperative LCR was an independent predictive factor for postoperative surgical site infection and significantly correlated with nutritional and inflammatory indicators. In addition, the LCR was useful for identifying esophageal cancer patients likely to have a poor outcome among patients with and without neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
Assessing the preoperative LCR might help physicians identify populations at high risk for perioperative complication and oncological outcomes, and determine individualized perioperative therapeutic strategies.

The Arabidopsis transcription factor NAC103 was previously found to be involved in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and DNA damage responses. In this study, we report the new biological function of NAC103 in abscisic acid (ABA) response during seed germination and seedling growth in Arabidopsis. The expression of NAC103 was up-regulated and the NAC103 protein was stabilized by ABA treatment. Both the loss-of-function mutants of NAC103, created by targeted gene-editing, and the over-expression plants of NAC103 have no obvious germination-related phenotype under normal growth conditions. However, under exogenous ABA treatment conditions, the NAC103 mutants were less sensitive to ABA during seed germination; in contrast, the NAC103 over-expression plants were more sensitive to ABA dulated phenotype under normal growth conditions. However, under exogenous ABA treatment conditions, the NAC103 mutants were less sensitive to ABA during seed germination; in contrast, the NAC103 over-expression plants were more sensitive to ABA during seed germination and young seedling growth. Further, NAC103 regulated several ABA-responsive downstream genes including MYB78, MYB3, PLP3, AMY1, and RGL2. These results demonstrate that NAC103 positively regulates ABA response in Arabidopsis.

We aimed to compare the prognostic predictive value of geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) with other nutritional indices on 1month survival in geriatric patients hospitalized for respiratory failure in intensive care unit (ICU).
A total of 191 geriatric patients (> 65years) admitted to a specialized chest hospital with respiratory failure between January 2018 and January 2019 were analyzed. Patients were classified into two category according to 30-day survival Survivors and Non-survivors. Nutritional assesment was done via GNRI, OPNI, NRS 2002, Nutric Scores in ICU.
Using GNRI, 146 (76.3%) geriatric patients found to be at risk of malnutrition (GNRI score ≤ 92). GNRI < 86.9 showed significantly higher 30-day mortality rate and patients with malnutrition risk were older, had significantly lower BMI, OPNI, and higher SOFA score. The Age, NRS 2002, Nutric and SOFA score had negative correlation with GNRI.
