Sexual violence is a major problem on college campuses, and innovative solutions are needed. Our university created a semester-long, credit-bearing, academic course as a curricular intervention intended to reduce sexual violence on campus. In this article, we describe the multiple methods used to evaluate the course, including a pre-post online survey with a quasi-experimental design, a qualitative content analysis of student reflection papers, and semistructured interviews with previously enrolled students conducted by a peer interviewer 3 months after course completion. The synthesis of evaluation findings indicated that an academic course has the potential to positively affect campus climate around sexual violence. Furthermore, using multiple methods enabled us to create a theory of change that illustrates how key course components shaped students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors about sexual violence, thereby ideally generating campus change. Results have been used by various stakeholders for both practice-based and scholarly purposes. We provide lessons learned and implications for practice that are transferable to other multimethod curricular intervention evaluations regardless of topical focus, including the many ways in which using multiple methods added value to the study; the considerable investment of time and resources needed when using multiple methods; the challenges that can arise when integrating findings across methods; the major benefits of having a multidisciplinary research team consisting of faculty and students; and the need to engage in critical reflexivity.Life participation requiring physical activity and physical function is a key patient-reported outcome for people receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). Clinician guidance is required from multidisciplinary sources regarding exercise and activity advice to address the specific needs of this group. From August 2020 through to June 2021, the Global Renal Exercise Network and the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis reviewed the published literature and international clinical experience to develop a set of clinical practice points. A set of questions relevant to physical activity and exercise were developed from the perspective of a person receiving PD and were the basis for the practice point development. The GRADE framework was used to evaluate the quality of evidence and to guide clinical practice points. The review of the literature found sparse quality evidence, and thus the clinical practice points are generally based on the expert consensus of people receiving PD, PD exercise expert clinicians and experienced PD exercise researchers. Clinical practice points address timing of exercise and activity (post-catheter insertion, peritoneal space empty or full), the uptake of specific activities (work, sex, swimming, core exercise), potential adverse outcomes related to activity and exercise (exit site care, perspiration, cardiovascular compromise, fatigue, intra-abdominal pressure), the effect of exercise and activity on conditions of interest (mental health, obesity, frailty, low fitness) and exercise nutrition.This study aimed to use systems thinking tools to understand network relationships to inform discussions, policy, and practice to improve nutrition, physical activity, and overweight/obesity prevention activities in a Western Australian local government area. An audit of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention activities was conducted, and identified organizations were invited to participate in an organizational network survey. Social network analysis (SNA) determined the extent to which organizations shared information, knowledge, and resources; engaged in joint program planning; applied for and shared funding; and identified operational barriers and contributors. AZD0095 mouse SNA data were mapped and analyzed using UCINET 6 and Netdraw software. Five organizations within the network were identified as core; the remainder were periphery. The strongest networks were sharing information, and the weakest was funding. The connections were centralized to one organization, enabling them to readily influence other organizations and network operations. Remaining organizations indicated limited partnership across the networks. Strengthened collaborations and partnerships are essential to health promotion, as they extend reach and organizational capabilities. This study provides a process for undertaking network analysis, identifying leverage points to facilitate communication and information sharing, and reorienting of collaborations and partnerships to consolidate scarce resources and act strategically within a bounded area. There is a need for stronger relationships between organizations and a reorientation of partnerships to facilitate resource sharing within the local government area, to improve nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention practices. SNA can assist in understanding organizational prevention networks within a bounded area to support future planning of practices and policy.The primary cilium is a nonmotile microtubule-based organelle in most vertebrate cell types. The primary cilium plays a critical role in tissue development and homeostasis by sensing and transducing various signaling pathways. Ciliary proteins such as intraflagellar transport (IFT) proteins as well as ciliary motor proteins, kinesin and dynein, comprise a bidirectional intraflagellar transport system needed for cilia formation and function. Mutations in ciliary proteins that lead to loss or dysfunction of primary cilia cause ciliopathies such as Jeune syndrome and Ellis-van Creveld syndrome and cause abnormalities in tooth development. These diseases exhibit severe skeletal and craniofacial dysplasia, highlighting the significance of primary cilia in skeletal development. Cilia are necessary for the propagation of hedgehog, transforming growth factor β, platelet-derived growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor signaling during osteogenesis and chondrogenesis. Ablation of ciliary proteins such as IFT80 or IFT20 blocks cilia formation, which inhibits osteoblast differentiation, osteoblast polarity, and alignment and reduces bone formation. Similarly, cilia facilitate chondrocyte differentiation and production of a cartilage matrix. Cilia also play a key role in mechanosensing and are needed for increased bone formation in response to mechanical forces.Sport participation is an important part of the development, both physically and mentally, of children and adolescents in the United States. Illness and injury associated with sport and physical activities may occur in the school setting. Although most sport-related illness and injury in students are considered minor emergencies, life-threatening illnesses or injuries may occur. It is important for the school nurse to recognize potential life-threatening emergencies associated with sport and physical activity, to initiate stabilization of the student with life-threatening symptoms, and to triage these students to an appropriate level of care (back to the classroom, home with their guardian with follow up at their primary healthcare provider's office, or directly to the closest emergency department via Emergency Medical Services). This article specifically describes the initial assessment and management of three potentially life-threatening conditions associated with sport and physical activity, namely sudden cardiac arrest, hypovolemic shock, and spinal cord injury.In an ongoing Mediterranean cohort, we compared age-related conditions between 208 HIV-infected persons and 104 matched controls. ≥3 comorbidities were found in 31.0% of HIV-infected patients and 8.7% of controls. Conditions significantly more frequent among the HIV-infected population were lipid abnormalities, cancer, osteopenia/osteoporosis, liver disease, sexual dysfunction, hearing deficit, sleep disorders, falls, cognitive complaints, being single, living alone, and being elderly at risk. HIV-infected patients aged >70 years had a significantly higher number of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) and comorbidities than controls. HIV-infected persons who had never smoked had a higher prevalence of CVRFs, ≥3 comorbidities, liver disease, cancer, and cognitive complaints compared to controls. Factors associated with frailty were being a man who has sex with men, ≥3 CVRFs, nadir CD470 years. The multidisciplinary assessment also revealed concerning findings in social, cognitive, and functional variables among HIV-infected individuals, with a higher prevalence of elderly at risk than among controls.Recently, the application of hydrogel materials in sample preparation techniques has increased dramatically. This review discusses application of hydrogels in the field of sample preparation and focuses on extraction techniques practiced with hydrogel materials as sorbent and coating materials, and discusses their synthesis route. After introducing hydrogels, their applications in a variety of solid phase extraction methods (as one of the types of sample preparation techniques) are described. These methods include solid-phase microextraction (SPME), micro solid-phase extraction (µ-SPE) and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), in which hydrogels are used as the main adsorbent for the extraction and pre-concentration of heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, drugs and pigments. Also, the mechanism of adsorption of the above analytes by different hydrogels and the advantages of using hydrogels in the solid-phase extraction techniques are discussed. In the following, applications of pH-sensitive hydrogels as stimuli-responsive polymers, are discussed in the sample preparation field. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives are covered in the last section that will be very helpful for future studies.Rodent models have contributed greatly to our understanding of preeclampsia (PE) progression in humans, however to-date no model has been able to effectively replicate the clinical presentation of the disease. This study aimed to provide a thorough physiological characterization of the arginine vasopressin (AVP)-induced rat model of PE to determine its applicability in studying the pathophysiology of PE. Female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 24) were separated into four groups (n = 6 per group) viz., pregnant AVP, pregnant saline, non-pregnant AVP, and non-pregnant saline. All animals received a continuous dose of either AVP (150 ng/h) or saline via subcutaneous mini osmotic pumps for 18 days. Full physiological characterization of the model included measuring systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and collecting urine and blood samples for biochemical analysis. AVP infusion significantly increased blood pressure and urinary protein levels in the pregnant rats (p less then 0.05). The interactions between leukemic blasts and cells within the bone marrow environment affect oncogenesis, cancer stem cell survival, as well as drug resistance in hematological cancers. The importance of this interaction is increasingly being recognized as a potentially important target for future drug discoveries and developments. Recent innovations in the high throughput drug screening-related technologies, novel ex-vivo disease-models, and freely available machine-learning algorithms are advancing the drug discovery process by targeting earlier undruggable proteins, complex pathways, as well as physical interactions (e.g. leukemic cell-bone microenvironment interaction).
In this review, the authors discuss the recent methodological advancements and existing challenges to target specialized hematopoietic niches within the bone marrow during leukemia and suggest how such methods can be used to identify drugs targeting leukemic cell-bone microenvironment interactions.
The recent development in cell-cell communication scoring technology and culture conditions can speed up the drug discovery by targeting the cell-microenvironment interaction.
