Based on the self-determination theory (SDT), the present study tested a mediational model in a cross-sectional data and found that gratification of basic psychological needs (GBPN; autonomy, relatedness, and competence) in adolescents' relationships with their mother and father is linked with wellness (life satisfaction, problem-solving confidence, and anxiety), through family cohesion, and disclosure and secrecy from mother. Adolescents (N = 1,097; 61.6% girls, Mage = 15.12, SD = 0.64; range = 14-16 years) were from nine public schools in Istanbul, Turkey. Findings showed that GBPN in the relationship with each parent has unique contribution to family cohesion, adolescent disclosure and secrecy from parents, and wellness. Findings also supported SDT's claim that GBPN is conducive to well-being cross-culturally.
The physical examination is a core competency in the training of pre-clerkship medical students. It is important to certify proficiency in the physical examination before students start their clinical rotations. Many institutions use home grown assessment tools for this purpose; however, there currently are no validated rubrics designed to assess the performance a head to toe physical examination by a pre-clerkship medical student. The goal of this study is to assess the reliability (inter-rater and intra-rater) of our institutionally developed rubric.
Clinical faculty with various levels of teaching experience watched videos of students doing a head to toe physical examination and scored the students using our assessment rubric. These scores were evaluated for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability.
A total of 15 student videos were reviewed by five faculty members with varying levels of teaching experience. The degree of inter-rater agreement (between raters) for single and average measure was excellent and the degree of intra-rater agreement (same rater twice) for single and average measure was excellent.
We conclude that our institutionally developed physical examination assessment rubric is a reliable means to certify proficiency in the physical examination before students start their clinical clerkships.
We conclude that our institutionally developed physical examination assessment rubric is a reliable means to certify proficiency in the physical examination before students start their clinical clerkships.Meningioma is one of the most frequent primary central nervous system tumors. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is the standard radiologic technique for provisional diagnosis and surveillance of meningioma, it nevertheless lacks the prima facie capacity in determining meningioma biological aggressiveness, growth, and recurrence potential. An increasing body of evidence highlights the potential of machine learning and radiomics in improving the consistency and productivity and in providing novel diagnostic, treatment, and prognostic modalities in neuroncology imaging. The aim of the present article is to review the evolution and progress of approaches utilizing machine learning in meningioma MRI-based sementation, diagnosis, grading, and prognosis. We provide a historical perspective on original research on meningioma spanning over two decades and highlight recent studies indicating the feasibility of pertinent approaches, including deep learning in addressing several clinically challenging aspects. We indicate the limitations of previous research designs and resources and propose future directions by highlighting areas of research that remain largely unexplored. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 5 TECHNICAL EFFICACY STAGE 2.Cultural heterosexist ideologies assume heterosexuality to be the default norm. Four studies investigated when concepts of romantic love are heterosexual-by-default (N = 685). read more In Studies 1-2, participants generated features of romantic love, in general (i.e., the default prototype) or among one of three sexual orientation-specific couples (lesbian, gay, or heterosexual). Heterosexual-identified participants' default prototypes were more similar to heterosexual than same-gender prototypes (Study 1). Lesbian- and gay-identified participants' default prototypes were more similar to both heterosexual and gay male than lesbian prototypes, whereas bisexual-identified participants' sexual orientation-specific prototypes were equivalently similar to the default (Study 2). However, heterosexual-identified participants rated presented features of love similarly across sexual orientation-specific conditions (Study 3). In a timed feature-verification task (Study 4), participants categorized fewer peripheral features of romantic love as relevant to same-gender than mixed-gender couples. Activating sexual orientation-specific representations affected subsequent default concepts of romantic love. We discuss implications for heterosexism theories and intervention.A 66-year-old man was referred to our institution for a popliteal arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The patient presented with left lower limb edema associated with a pulsatile popliteal mass with bruit at auscultation, and no sign of lower limb ischemia. Relevant history included penetrating stabbing wound to that leg 50 years prior. A computed tomography scan demonstrated an AVF with a tract 10 mm in length and 6 mm in diameter at the level of the popliteal fossa. An AMPLATZER Vascular Plug III 12 mm (AVP - AGA Medical Corporation, Minneapolis, MN) was initially deployed through a percutaneous femoral arterial access. Initial angiographic check showed inadequate sealing, so the plug was repositioned from the venous side of the AVF with a through-and-through arteriovenous access from the posterior tibial vein, achieving a correct sealing. At 24-month follow-up the patient does not present any complications from the procedure, and the AVF remains occluded.Forests play an important role in both regional and global C cycles. However, the spatial patterns of biomass C density and underlying factors in Northeast Asia remain unclear. Here, we characterized spatial patterns and important drivers of biomass C density for Northeast Asia, based on multisource data from in situ forest inventories, as well as remote sensing, bioclimatic, topographic, and human footprint data. We derived, for the first time, high-resolution (1 km × 1 km) maps of the current and future forest biomass C density for this region. Based on these maps, we estimated that current biomass C stock in northeastern China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Republic of Korea to be 2.53, 0.40, and 0.35 Pg C, respectively. Biomass C stock in Northeast Asia has increased by 20%-46% over the past 20 years, of which 40%-76% was contributed by planted forests. We estimated the biomass C stock in 2080 to be 6.13 and 6.50 Pg C under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively, which exceeded the present region-wide C stock value by 2.
