The coronavirus pandemic makes this even more critical as both COVID-19 and police brutality disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, Latinx and other communities of color.The objective of this study was to collect prevalence estimates of indoor tanning usage and associated injuries in Canada. The rapid response component of the 2019 Canadian Community Health Survey collected data on the use of tanning equipment in the previous 12 months, including reasons for use, frequency/duration of use, precautions taken and adverse reactions or injuries. The 2019 research findings were as follows, an estimated 3.0% (95% CI 2.5-3.4%) of Canadians reported that they had used indoor tanning equipment in the past year. Among users, 71.1% (95% CI 63.9-78.3%) were female and females aged 18-34 were significantly more prevalent users compared to females aged 45 or older. The prevalence of indoor tanning was higher among people without a university degree; however, there were no differences in prevalence by household income or region. Most users indicated they used indoor tanning equipment within a tanning salon (75.3% 95% CI 69.1-81.6%) and the most common reason for usage was to develop a "protective" base tan (72.1% 95% CI 65.2-78.9%). Over one third (39.2% 95% CI 31.1-47.2%) of all users reported 10 or more sessions in the past year. The prevalence of indoor UV tanning usage is declining in Canada. Similar to results in 2014, the majority of users continue to be female, with a large number in the 18 to 34 age group.Sleep duration is a risk factor for poor health and all-cause mortality. Evidence suggests that neighbourhood characteristics such as built environment and socioeconomic status (SES) may affect sleep duration in adults. This study examined the relationship between neighbourhood built environment (i.e., measured via the street pattern) and SES with sleep duration in adults (n = 797) from 12 neighbourhoods in Calgary (Canada). Covariate adjusted linear and multinomial logistic regression models estimated the associations between street pattern (grid, warped-grid, curvilinear), SES and sleep duration. We also tested if the interaction between street pattern and SES was associated with sleep duration. Although neighbourhood street pattern and neighbourhood SES were not independently associated with sleep, the interaction between street pattern and neighbourhood SES, was associated with mean sleep duration. Individuals living in curvilinear low SES neighbourhoods had the shortest sleep duration (6.93 h per day; 95% CI 6.68, 7.18), while those living in curvilinear high SES neighbourhoods slept the longest (7.43 h per day; 95% CI 7.29, 7.57). Neighbourhood street pattern and SES, as well as their interaction, were not associated with the odds of sleeping shorter or longer than 7 to 8 h per day. Our findings suggest that the combined effect of the neighbourhood built environment and SES is potentially important for influencing sleep duration. More research is needed to understand the complex interrelationships between the built environment, SES, and sleep.Rationale The tireless research for effective drug delivery approaches is prompted by poor target tissue penetration and limited selectivity against diseased cells. To overcome these issues, various nano- and micro-carriers have been developed so far, but some of them are characterized by slow degradation time, thus hampering repeated drug administrations. The aim of this study was to pursue a selective delivery of magnetic biodegradable polyelectrolyte capsules in a mouse breast cancer model, using an external magnetic field. Methods Four different kinds of magnetic polyelectrolyte capsules were fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly of biodegradable polymers on calcium carbonate templates. Magnetite nanoparticles were embedded either into the capsules' shell (sample S) or both into the shell and the inner volume of the capsules (samples CnS, where n is the number of nanoparticle loading cycles). Here, single-core SPION MPI tracers coated with covalently bonded polyethyelene glycol (PEG) brushes were obtained using a semi-batch thermal decomposition synthesis with controlled addition of molecular oxygen, followed by an optimized PEG-silane ligand exchange procedure. The physical and magnetic properties, MPI performance, and blood circulation time of these newly synthesized tracers were compared to those of two commercially available SPIONs that were not tailored for MPI but are used for MPI ferucarbotran and PEG-coated Synomag®-D. The new tailored tracer has MPI sensitivity that is ~3-times better than the commercial tracer ferucarbotran and much longer circulation half-life than both commercial tracers (t1/2=6.99 h for the new tracer, vs t1/2=0.59 h for ferucarbotran, and t1/2=0.62 h for PEG-coated Synomag®-D).Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is characterised by abnormalities in the walls of arterioles and capillaries, precipitated by hereditary or acquired characteristics, and culminating in microvascular thrombosis because of dysregulated complement activity. A number of drugs can precipitate TMA, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors, because of their effects on endothelial repair. Pazopanib is a VEGF inhibitor used for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC); it is uncommonly associated with TMA. A 52-year-old male, 5 years post his second kidney transplant secondary to immunoglobulin (Ig) A nephropathy, presented with hypertension, fluid overload, and worsening graft function (peak creatinine 275 µmol/L, baseline 130-160 µmol/L) and nephrotic range proteinuria 2 months after commencing pazopanib for metastatic RCC. His maintenance immunosuppression included ciclosporin, mycophenolate, and prednisolone. Haematological parameters were unremarkable. Allograft biopsy demonstrated glomerular and arteriolar changes consistent with chronic active TMA, with overlying features of borderline cellular rejection.
