Men have been, and still are, included in more studies than women, in large part because of the lingering belief that ovulatory cycles result in women showing too much variability to be economically viable subjects. This belief has scientific and social consequences, and yet, it remains largely untested. Recent work in rodents has shown either that there is no appreciable difference in overall variability across a wealth of traits, or that in fact males may show more variability than females.
We analyzed learning management system logins associated to gender records spanning 2 years from 13,777 students at Northeastern Illinois University. These data were used to assess variability in daily rhythms in a heterogeneous human population.
At the population level, men are more likely than women to show extreme chronotypes (very early or very late phases of activity). Men were also found to be more variable than women across and within individuals. Variance correlated negatively with academic performance, which also showed a gender difference. Whereas a complaint against using female subjects is that their variance is the driver of statistical sex differences, only 6% of the gender performance difference is potentially accounted for by variance, suggesting that variability is not the driver of sex differences here.
Our findings do not support the idea that women are more behaviorally variable than men and may support the opposite. Our findings support including sex as a biological variable and do not support variance-based arguments for the exclusion of women as research subjects.

Klotho is an anti-aging protein mainly expressed in the kidneys with a smaller amount expressed in adipose tissue. Klotho effects include roles in reducing oxidative stress, insulin signaling, adipogenesis and glucose metabolism. Few studies have investigated the role of dietary factors such as sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) on serum α-klotho levels in young children.
Data was collected from 60 low-income Latina pregnant women and their infants in San Francisco from birth until 2 years of life and examined for associations between dietary factors and child secreted α-klotho protein levels at 2 years.
Mean α-klotho levels were 1782.96 ± 874.56 pg/mL at 2 years of age. Any consumption of SSBs was independently associated with increased α-klotho levels (Beta = 682.79, 95%CI 67.50, 1298.09; p = 0.03). Household incomeranging from $25,000 to $50,000 was also correlated to higher levels of α-klotho in children compared with lower income levels (<$25,000) (Beta = 1613.35, 95%CI 527.37, 2699.33; p = 0.005).
The positive association between SSB intake and α-klotho levels at 2 years may reflect higher phosphate levels consistent with SSB intake. Talabostat order Higher socioeconomic status may be a proxy for reduced stress exposure in children, also associated with higher α-klotho levels. Future studies should evaluate the early impact of exposures to SSBs, stress and accelerated aging in children.

Homologous recombination deficiency is a marker of response to poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors in different cancer types including ovary, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. To date, no report about poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors has been published on cervical cancer.
Here we present the case of a patient with cervical cancer treated in this setting. A 49-year-old woman diagnosed with International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stage 2018 IIIC2 locally advanced undifferentiated cervical cancer received first-line chemoradiotherapy followed by carboplatin, paclitaxel, and bevacizumab with partial response. Because of a family history of cancers, the patient was tested and found positive for a pathogenic BRCA1 germline and somatic mutation, which motivated bevacizumab plus olaparib maintenance treatment. A simple hysterectomy was performed after 2years stable disease; pathological report showed complete pathological response, and 12months follow-up showed no recurrence.
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors could be an alternative maintenance treatment for patients with persistent advanced cervical cancer previously treated with platinum, especially when familial history of cancers is reported. Clinical trials using poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors for advanced cervical cancer are warranted.

Coronavirus disease 2019 has become a health problem spreading worldwide with pandemic characteristics since March 2020. Postcoronavirus disease 2019 symptoms are more frequent than initially expected, with fatigue as an often-mentioned issue.
We describe a 32-year-old white male and a 55-year-old white female who suffered from postcoronavirus disease 2019 fatigue syndrome. On polysomnography, rapid eye movementassociated sleep apnea with an increased hypopnea index during rapid eye movement phases of 36.8 and 19.5events per hour was found. Based on the patients' burdensome fatigue symptoms, we initiated automatic positive airway pressure therapy, which diminished sleep apnea (rapid eye movement index 0.0 in both patients) and, consequently, also the fatigue symptoms.
Since sleep apnea and coronavirus disease 2019 are both associated with fatigue, a screening for sleep apnea might be considered in coronavirus disease 2019 patients with fatigue syndrome.
