Later population movements, especially the gene flow from the Middle East associated with the Neolithic, have diluted the genetic autochthonous component, creating an east to west gradient. Recent historical movements, such as the Arabization, have also contributed to the genetic landscape observed currently in North Africa and have culturally transformed the region. Genome analyses have not shown evidence of a clear correlation between cultural and genetic diversity in North Africa, as there is no genetic pattern of differentiation between Tamazight (i.e. Berber) and Arab speakers as a whole. Besides the gene flow received from neighboring areas, the analysis of North African genomes has shown that the region has also acted as a source of gene flow since ancient times. As a result of the genetic uniqueness of North African groups and the lack of available data, there is an urgent need for the study of genetic variation in the region and its implications in health and disease.

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of asymmetric versus symmetric bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) repair on transvalvular flow patterns and aortic wall shear stress (WSS).

Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging was prospectively and consecutively performed in patients with congenital aortic valve (AV) disease before and after AV repair. The following MRI-based parameters were assessed (i) flow eccentricity index, (ii) backward flow across the AV, (iii) grading of vortical and helical flow, and (iv) WSS (N/m2) in the proximal aorta. MRI-derived flow parameters were compared between patients who underwent 'asymmetric BAV repair' (n = 13) and 'symmetric BAV repair' (n = 7).

A total of 20 patients (39 ± 12 years, 80% male), who underwent BAV repair, were included. In the asymmetric BAV repair group, circumferential WSS reduction was found at the level of the aortic arch (P = 0.015). In the symmetric BAV repair group, postoperative circumferential WSS was significantly reduced compared to nital AV repair.The introduction of the Xylella fastidiosa Wells bacterium into Apulia (South Italy) has caused the massive dieback of olive trees, and is threatening olive production throughout the Mediterranean Region. The key vector of X. fastidiosa in Europe is the spittlebug Philaenus spumarius L. The dispersal capabilities of P. spumarius are poorly known, despite being a key parameter for the prediction of the spread of the bacterium. In this study, we have examined the dispersal of P. spumarius adults in two different agroecosystems in Italy an olive grove in Apulia (Southern Italy) and a meadow in Piedmont (Northern Italy). Insects were marked with albumin and released during seven independent trials over 2 yr. The recapture data were pooled separately for each agroecosystem and used to estimate the dispersal kernels of P. spumarius in the olive grove and in the meadow. The diffusion coefficient estimate for P. spumarius was higher in the meadow than in the olive grove. The median distance from the release point for 1 d of dispersal was 26 m in the olive grove and 35 m in the meadow. On the basis of our model, we estimated that 50% of the spittlebug population remained within 200 m (98% within 400 m) during the 2 mo period of high abundance of the vector on olives in Apulia. However, in a natural pregnancy, the deletion of Notch1 (PgrCre/+Notch1f/f, or Notch1d/d) only affects female fertility in the first 30 days of a 6-month fertility test, but not the later stages. In the present study, we undertook a closer evaluation at the first pregnancy of these mice to attempt to understand this puzzling phenomenon. We observed a large number of pregnancy losses in Notch1d/d mice in their first pregnancy, which led to the subfertility observed in the first 30 days of the fertility test. We then demonstrated that the initial pregnancy loss is a consequence of impaired decidualization. Furthermore, we identified a group of genes that contribute to Notch1 regulated decidualization in a natural pregnancy. Gene ontogeny analysis showed that these differentially expressed genes in the natural pregnancy are involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, different from genes that have been previously identified from the artificial decidualization model, which contribute to cell proliferation and apoptosis. Before and after intervention, muscle volume, strength, and systemic inflammation were assessed, and muscle biopsies were analyzed for markers of anabolism, catabolism, and inflammation. Isometric knee-extensor strength increased in ω-3 (+12.2%), but not in PLAC (-1.4%; pinteraction = .015), whereas leg press strength improved in both conditions (+27.1%; ptime less then .001). RE, but not ω-3, decreased inflammatory (p65NF-κB) and catabolic (FOXO1, LC3b) markers, and improved muscle quality. Yet, muscle volume remained unaffected by RE and ω-3. The International Health Regulations (IHR) have been the governing framework for global health security since 2007. Declaring public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC) is a cornerstone of the IHR. Here we review how PHEIC are formally declared, the diseases for which such declarations have been made from 2007 to 2020 and justifications for such declarations.

Six events were declared PHEIC between 2007 and 2020 the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, Ebola (West African outbreak 2013-2015, outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo 2018-2020), poliomyelitis (2014 to present), Zika (2016) and COVID-19 (2020 to present). Poliomyelitis is the longest PHEIC. Zika was the first PHEIC for an arboviral disease. For several other emerging diseases a PHEIC was not declared despite the fact that the public health impact of the event was considered serious and associated with potential for international spread.

Spatial autocorrelation among P. ficus detections was strongest at distances of ~250 m and detectable at regional scales (up to 40 km), estimates of the rate and directionality of spread were highly idiosyncratic, and P. ficus detection hotspots were spatiotemporally dynamic. link3 Generalized linear model, boosted regression tree, and random forest modeling methods performed well in predicting habitat suitability for P. ficus.
