This study challenges dominant ideology that AAs are unwilling to participate in research and offers solutions to promote research inclusive of their perceptions. Therefore, researchers need to design research with inclusiveness and transparency that openly displays how research will impact future generations.Striving for normalcy plays an important role in patients' quality of life and illness experience. Normalcy is a powerful and complex idea, and the term can be used intentionally or unintentionally to various effects. We aimed to raise awareness of the complexity of this idea of normalcy and thus promote a more critically reflective understanding among nurses and other health professionals. By raising questions about how we use normalcy in our discourses and the potential impact that our professionally socialized interpretations of what constitutes normal might have on patient experience, we can encourage nurses and other health professionals to develop an intellectual curiosity about how the idea of normalcy works, and to be more critically reflective about how they integrate normalcy language into their practices and patient-centered communications. By unpacking the ideas that normal is always a good thing in the context of patient experience, and that normalizing can neutralize that which is bad in the health care world, we can qualify the language used and the metamessages conveyed for the ultimate benefit of patients.Cross-contamination during pharmaceutical drug manufacturing can result in expensive recalls. To counter that, companies spend significant time and resources to ensure equipment cleanliness, often relying on the compound solubility data in various solvents as the main indicator of cleaning success. The aim of this work is to provide an alternative way to analyze the fouling and cleaning of surfaces in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes by using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and Raman spectroscopy. In this study, we chose an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), sitagliptin phosphate monohydrate (SIT), as the model drug compound and observed its adsorption and desorption on stainless steel (SS2343), borosilicate glass (glass), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surfaces. SIT was selected as the model API since it is a product manufactured on a large scale and is part of the widely used dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitor class of oral hypoglycemics used to treat type 2 diabetes ms on relevant surfaces during the pharmaceutical manufacturing process.Increasing interest in the detection of biogenic signatures, such as amino acids, on icy moons and bodies within our solar system has led to the development of compact in situ instruments. Given the expected dilute biosignatures and high salinities of these extreme environments, purification of icy samples before analysis enables increased detection sensitivity. Herein, we outline a novel compact cation exchange method to desalinate proteinogenic amino acids in solution, independent of the type and concentration of salts in the sample. Using a modular microfluidic device, initial experiments explored operational limits of binding capacity with phenylalanine and three model cations, Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+. Phenylalanine recovery (94-17%) with reduced conductivity (30-200 times) was seen at high salt-to-amino-acid ratios between 251 and 5001. Later experiments tested competition between mixtures of 17 amino acids and other chemistries present in a terrestrial ocean sample. Recoveries ranged from 11% to 85% depending on side chain chemistry and cation competition, with concentration shown for select high affinity amino acids. This work outlines a nondestructive amino acid purification device capable of coupling to multiple downstream analytical techniques for improved characterization of icy samples at remote ocean worlds.Homochirality is a generic and unique property of all biochemical life and it is considered a universal and agnostic biosignature. Upon interaction with unpolarized light, homochirality induces fractional circular polarization in the light that is scattered from it, which can be sensed remotely. As such, it can be a prime candidate biosignature in the context of future life detection missions and observatories. The linear polarizance of vegetation is also sometimes envisaged as a biosignature, although it does not share the same molecular origin as circular polarization. It is known that linear polarization of surfaces is strongly dependent on the phase angle. The relationship between the phase angle and circular polarization stemming from macromolecular assemblies such as in vegetation, however, remained unclear. In this study, using the average of 27 different species, we demonstrate that the circular polarization-phase angle dependency of vegetation induces relatively small changes in spectral shape and mostly affects the signal magnitude. With these results, we underline the use of circular spectropolarimetry as a promising agnostic biosignature complementary to the use of linear spectropolarimetry and scalar reflectance.Cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) is an important method to restore and maintain fertility in preadolescent children suffering from cancer. For protection of SSCs from cryoinjury, various antioxidant agents have been used. The aim of this study was to assess the antiapoptotic and antioxidant effects of melatonin in frozen-thawed SSCs. SSCs were isolated from testes of neonatal mice (3-6 days old) and their purities were measured by flow cytometry with promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger protein. After culturing, the cells were frozen in two groups (1) control and (2) melatonin (100 μM) and stored for 1 month. Finally, the cell viability, colonization rate, expression of Bcl-2 and BAX gene, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were evaluated after freezing-thawing. Melatonin increased the viability and colonization of SSCs and Bcl-2 gene expression. It also diminished BAX gene expression and intracellular ROS. The results of this study show that melatonin with antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects can be used as an additive for freezing and long-term storage of cells and infertility treatment in the clinic.Long-term cryopreservation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) is important and beneficial for a variety of biomedical research and applications. In this study, we investigated HUVEC's cryobiological characteristics and parameters that are indispensable for predicting and determining an optimal cooling rate to prevent lethal intracellular ice formation (IIF) and severe cell dehydration during the cryopreservation processes. The parameters include cell membrane hydraulic conductivity (i.e., cell membrane water permeability), Lp, cell membrane water permeability activation energy, Elp, and osmotically inactive volume of a cell Vb. Cryomicroscopy was used to study the IIF phenomena and cell volume excursion at various cooling rates, 1, 10, and 20°C/min, respectively, based on which the cryobiological parameters were determined using biophysical and mathematical models. A single-mode electromagnetic resonance (SMER) system was developed to achieve ultrafast and uniform rewarming for large samples. In this study, we investigated the heating effects of the SMER system and compared the heating performance with water bath and air warming. A numerical model was established to further analyze the temperature change and distribution at different time points during the rewarming process. Overall, the SMER system achieved rapid heating at 331.63 ± 8.59°C min-1 while limiting the maximum thermal gradient to less then 9°C min-1, significantly better than the other two warming methods. The experimental results were highly consistent, indicating SMER is a promising rewarming technology for the successful cryopreservation of large biosamples.Cryopreservation of spermatozoa is a general procedure to preserve viable sperm for an indefinite period. Despite the efficiency of sperm cryopreservation, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during cryopreservation can induce structural and functional changes in spermatozoa. Also, cryopreservation has been shown to decrease the spermatozoa's antioxidant activity inducing them to be more sensitive to damage caused by ROS. Experimental evidence suggests that astaxanthin (AXT) has essential activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antithrombotic properties. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of AXT on the sperm quality of healthy men during freezing-thawing. In the first phase, 10 semen samples with different concentrations of AXT (0.0, 0.5, 1, and 2 μM) were cryopreserved to achieve an optimal dose of AXT. Then, motility, viability, and phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization were evaluated. In view of this, Uganda's Ministry of Health established the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) in September 2013, as a central coordination unit for all PHEs in the country. Uganda followed the World Health Organization's framework to establish the PHEOC, including establishing a steering committee, acquiring legal authority, developing emergency response plans, and developing a concept of operations. The same framework governs the PHEOC's daily activities. Between January 2014 and December 2021, Uganda's PHEOC coordinated response to 271 PHEs, hosted 207 emergency coordination meetings, trained all core staff in public health emergency management principles, participated in 21 simulation exercises, coordinated Uganda's Global Health Security Agenda activities, established 6 subnational PHEOCs, and strengthened the capacity of 7 countries in public health emergency management.
