The Ouji fashion style, also known as Boystyle or Dandy (dandei) depending on the substyle, is a variation of Lolita that focuses on masculine elements and often incorporates more tailored cuts. The style is not a male counterpart to Lolita, and in fact may be worn by either gender and by anyone who prefers a more masculine look. The styles share some common aesthetics but can be distinguished by the eras of influence, the level of detail, and how youthful or mature they appear.

Although some may associate the Ouji fashion with pirate, punk or adorable costume themes, it is not a costume style and should be avoided when dressing up for an event such as a cosplay convention. The style is meant to be a sophisticated, classy, and elegant look that will not only draw attention to the wearer but is a form of personal expression.

Like Lolita, there are a number of different Ouji substyles and themes that focus on various eras of fashion or that use fanciful details to create a unique look. These include Boystyle (Shao Nian Zhuang), Dandy, and Sweet. Boystyle is the most similar to Lolita and can be considered a masculine version of the style.

Unlike lolita dress of Lolita, Boystyle allows for more mature and masculine looks and frequently incoperates details that challenge traditional masculine norms. In addition, the style is not only embraced by women but has many androgynous males who choose to wear it as well.

Generally speaking, the most important factor to distinguishing between Lolita and Ouji is the pants. While skirts and dresses are sometimes used by those who wear this style, pants are the most important element. Knickerbockers and shorts of varying length are popular in the Ouji fashion style, as are a variety of long pants in high-waist and punk inspired designs. They can also feature belted connected half-skirts, lace and Rococo era influences, and may be worn in a range of colors from dark blacks to pastel pinks and reds.

Other popular clothing items for the ouji style include top hats, fedoras, jabots, and a variety of pocket watches, ties, bows, and brooches. Accessories are usually minimal, but may vary depending on the style: gothic Ouji uses fewer and darker accessories, sweet uses more feminine and floral ones, and dandy tends to be more traditional and mature.
