There is now abundant information on genes involved in molluscan oogenesis and their associations with ovarian development. However, few studies have investigated the ovarian transcriptome of Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai).

The objective of this study was to identify genes related to ovarian development and maturation in Pacific abalone utilizing RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and to verify the genes most relevant to different stages of maturation.

RNA samples from the ovarian tissues of sexually immature and mature abalone were used to construct cDNA libraries, which were paired-end sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform. Reads from individual samples (unigenes) were aligned to reference transcriptome databases for identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between immature and mature ovarian libraries. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to verify the RNA-seq data.

A total of 8779 unigenes were obtained from the ovaries of immature and mature abalone, with a total length of 3323,279bp and anaverage length of 379bp per gene. Gene ontology analysis assigned 5860 unigenes to biological processes, 855 to cellular components, and 1352 to molecular functions. Demonstration of auditory comprehension was based on derived conditional relations and the formation of equivalence relations. Participants learned two sets of three simple visual discriminations in which the positive stimulus (S+) was a written pseudo-sentence (C1, C2, or C3) or a compound abstract picture (D1, D2, or D3), displayed in the correct orientation. Each trial presented the S+ simultaneously with two S- which were the same sentence or picture as the positive stimulus but were displayed in either an upside-down or an inverse orientation. Correct responses were followed by specific consequences with two components presented simultaneously a dictated pseudo-sentence (A) and a representative picture (B). Probes of arbitrary matching to sample assessed derived auditory-visual (AB, AC, and AD) and visual-visual (BC, CB, BD, DB, CD, and DC) conditional relations. All three participants learned the simple discriminations; two of them showed derived conditional relations, demonstrating the formation of three ABCD classes. The present study replicated and extended previous results on sentence learning in children with CIs, suggesting the simple discrimination training with specific consequences as an efficient procedure to generate auditory-visual and symbolic relations in this population.

Many patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer do not adhere to endocrine therapy (ET), and treatment-related side effects are often discussed by participants in online breast cancer forums. Our aim was to survey this unique group of patients about their ET-related experiences.

We partnered with patients active in breast cancer social media communities to develop a survey assessing ET-related side effects and medical team communication. Patients with a history of HR+ breast cancer who had received a recommendation to take ET were eligible to participate in the anonymous, online survey.

Respondents included 2353 women and 54 men. Aromatase inhibitors were the most commonly used medication. Side effects were reported by 91.2%, were more often experienced by women than men (p < 0.001), and were primarily related to medication type. Approximately one-third of respondents discontinued therapy early. While most felt supported by their medical team, 31.5% reported that theirside effects were dismissed or minimized. Survey respondents most frequently reported that a healthy diet and exercise, yoga/acupuncture, and vitamins/supplements were helpful in managing ET-related side effects.

ET-related side effects are very common, and one-third discontinued treatment early. Lifestyle changes and complementary therapies can be important tools for side effect management. One-third of patients did not feel that theirside effects were taken seriously.

We aimed to investigate the expression of melatonin 1A and 1B receptors in human placental tissue in the case of placental insufficiency manifested as the intrauterine growth restriction syndrome of the fetus (IUGR). Thirty-two pregnant women aged 18-36 with placental insufficiency manifested at the term 36 weeks of gestation as the IUGR syndrome (the estimated fetal weight less than the 3rd percentile) were included in the experimental group; all their babies had the diagnosis confirmed at birth, which occurred after 37 weeks of gestation. The control group consisted of 30 women with uncomplicated pregnancy of the same term. Pieces of the placental tissue were obtained after deliveries, and melatonin 1A and 1B receptors were immunoassayed; the richness of melatonin receptors in the placental tissue was estimated on the basis of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of receptors, calculated in the IHC image score.
