Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATd) is a hereditary disease, mainly characterized by early onset and the lower lobes' predominant emphysema. Bronchiectasis is characterized by dilatation of the bronchial wall and a clinical syndrome whose features are a cough, sputum production and frequent respiratory exacerbations. In the literature, there are many papers concerning these two clinical entities, but there is still a lot of debate about a possible association between them, in particular about the frequency of their association and causal links. The aim of this short communication is to show the literature reports about the association between AATd and bronchiectasis to establish the state of the art and possible future developments in this research field.Noncoding RNAs, especially microRNAs (miRNAs), have been reported to play important roles during skeletal muscle development and regeneration. Our previous sequencing data revealed that miR-99a-5p is one of the most abundant miRNAs in chicken breast muscle. The purpose of this study was to reveal the regulatory mechanism of miR-99a-5p in the proliferation and differentiation of chicken skeletal muscle satellite cells (SMSCs). Through the investigation of cell proliferation activity, cell cycle progression, and 5-ethynyl-29-deoxyuridine (EdU) assay, we found that miR-99a-5p can significantly promote the proliferation of SMSCs. Moreover, we found that miR-99a-5p can inhibit myotube formation by decreasing the expression of muscle cell differentiation marker genes. After miR-99a-5p target gene scanning, we confirmed that miR-99a-5p directly targets the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of myotubularin-related protein 3 (MTMR3) and regulates its expression level during chicken SMSC proliferation and differentiation. We also explored the role of MTMR3 in muscle development and found that its knockdown significantly facilitates the proliferation but represses the differentiation of SMSCs, which is opposite to the effects of miR-99a-5p. Overall, we demonstrated that miR-99a-5p regulates the proliferation and differentiation of SMSCs by targeting MTMR3.Background/Aim Synchronous gynecological malignancies are rarely encountered, and most often these cases are represented by synchronous ovarian and endometrial cancer. Vismodegib concentration The aim of this paper is to present the case of a 53-year-old patient who was diagnosed with synchronous cervical and ovarian cancer. Case presentation The patient had been initially investigated for vaginal bleeding and was submitted to a biopsy confirming the presence of a cervical adenocarcinoma. Once the diagnostic of malignancy was confirmed, the patient was submitted to a computed tomography which revealed the presence of large abdominal tumoral nodules of peritoneal carcinomatosis and was submitted to palliative chemotherapy with poor response. Eighteen months later she developed intestinal obstruction and was submitted to surgery. At that moment, synchronous ovarian and cervical tumors were diagnosed. Total radical hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy, pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection, omentectomy, and pelvic peritonectomy was performed; in the meantime, the histopathological studies confirmed the presence of two synchronous malignancies. Conclusion Although synchronous lesions are rarely encountered, this eventuality should not be omitted. In such cases, surgery should be taken in consideration and the intent of radicality should regard both lesions.Testosterone could have adverse effect on fertility. In this study, we hypothesized that this hormone could reduce the number of embryo implantations via affecting the normal endometrium ultrastructure and expression of endometrial proteins involved in implantation. Therefore, the aims were to identify these adverse testosterone effects. METHODS Intact pregnant rats were given 250 or 500 µg/kg/day testosterone for three days, beginning from day 1 of pregnancy. Rats were euthanized either at day 4 to analyze the ultra-structural changes in the endometrium and expression and distribution of MECA-79 protein, or at day 6 to determine the number of implantation sites. RESULTS Administration of 500 µg/kg/day testosterone suppresses endometrial pinopodes development and down-regulates expression and distribution of MECA-79 protein in the uterus. In addition, the number of implantation sites were markedly decreased. CONCLUSIONS Changes in endometrial ultrastructure and expression of implantation protein in the endometrium in early pregnancy period could be the reason for failure of embryo implantation under testosterone influence.Fragment screening is a powerful tool to identify and characterize binding pockets in proteins. We herein present the results of a proof-of-concept screening campaign of a versatile 96-entry fragment library from our laboratory against the drug target and model protein human carbonic anhydrase II. The screening revealed a novel chemotype for carbonic anhydrase inhibition, as well as less common non-covalent interaction types and unexpected covalent linkages. Lastly, different runs of the PanDDA tool reveal a practical hint for its application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between content type of smartphone use and psychological characteristics and addiction propensity, including the average time of smartphone use and problematic smartphone use. Data were obtained from the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, a nationally representative survey of middle- and high-school students (n = 62,276). The content type of smartphone use was divided into four categories (1) Study, (2) Social-Networking Services (SNS), (3) Game, and (4) Entertainment. The association of depressive mood and suicidal ideation with content type of smartphone use was analyzed, using multiple and binary logistic regression analyses, respectively. The relationship between content type of smartphone use and time spent on smartphone use and problematic smartphone use was analyzed by using multiple logistic regression, adjusted for related covariables. The results of this study revealed that depressive mood and suicidal ideation were significantly associated with the SNS smartphone use group, compared with the other groups.
