A novel coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) first detected in Wuhan, China, has spread rapidly since December 2019, causing more than 1.4 million confirmed infections and 15000 fatalities (as of April 9, 2020). The outbreak was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. Isolation, quarantine, social distancing, and community containment measures were rapidly implemented in China, which helped in containing the disease. However, other low- and middle-income countries lack such extensive infrastructural capacities and resources. Nivolumab in vivo Cancer patients are particularly at high risk of infection and mortality due to immunosuppression. Hence self-quarantine is recommended for them. Additionally, it is becoming impossible to maintain the continuity of care when cancer patients have to avoid physical visits. Social media applications, e.g., Facebook and WhatsApp, can provide educational group program and psychosocial support to these patients while maintain social distancing. We have analyzed their use in this review article and how it could change the follow-up of cancer patients during this pandemic. This study examined the effect of supplemental betaine on live performance, selected blood parameters, and gene expression of water channel proteins (Aquaporins, AQP) of broiler chicks delayed in placement for 48 h post-hatch. In total, 540 newly-hatched male broiler chicks were obtained from a local hatchery and were randomly allotted to one of five treatments with nine replicates per treatment (12 chicks per replicate). Chicks were either placed immediately, control; held for 48 h post-hatch with no access to feed or water, Holdnull; held for 48 h with free access to drinking water only, HoldW; held for 48 h with free access to drinking water supplemented with 1 ml per L of betaine solution (40% betaine), HoldB1; or held for 48 h with free access to drinking water supplemented with 2 ml per L of betaine solution (40% betaine), HoldB2 group. The results showed that post-hatch holding for 48 h depressed feed intake and body weight gain during the entire 15 d study period with no beneficial effect of supplemental betaine. Chicks in the HoldB2 group had elevated serum glucose, triglycerides, and aspartate aminotransferase 48 h post-hatch. Early water deprivation directly affected the brain proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and hepatic glucocorticoid receptors (GR) expression and induced significant changes in various aquaporins (AQP1, AQP2, AQP4, and AQP9). In conclusion, betaine supplementation to chicks held for 48 h post-hatch resulted in some changes in blood biochemical indices with no effects on performance during the first 15 days of life. The results suggest that betaine supplementation could ameliorate the stressful effects of water deprivation on POMC and GR expression and maintain cellular osmosis through interactions with variable aquaporins expression, particularly the AQP1 and AQP2. Further investigations are required to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the selective regulatory expression of different aquaporins in relation to betaine supplementation. The contamination of Salmonella Enteritidis in eggs and chicken meat via vertical transmission has become a worldwide public health concern. Biofilm formation by S. Enteritidis further enhances its antibacterial resistance. However, whether genes related to biofilm formation affect the level of vertical transmission is still unclear. Here, S. Enteritidis mutants ΔcsgD, ΔcsgA, ΔbcsA, and ΔadrA were constructed from wild type strain C50041 (WT), and their biofilm-forming ability was determined by Crystal violet staining assay. Then the median lethal dose (LD50) assay was performed to determine the effects of the selected genes on virulence. The bacterial load in eggs produced by infected laying hens via the intraperitoneal pathway or crop gavage was determined for evaluation of the vertical transmission. Crystal violet staining assay revealed that S. Enteritidis mutants ΔcsgD, ΔcsgA, and ΔbcsA, but not ΔadrA, impaired biofilm formation compared with WT strain. Furthermore, the LD50 in SPF chickens showed that both the ΔcsgD and ΔbcsA mutants were less virulent compared with WT strain. Among the intraperitoneally infected laying hens, the WT strain-infected group had the highest percentage of bacteria-positive eggs (24.7%), followed by the ΔadrA group (16%), ΔcsgA group (9.9%), ΔbcsA group (4.5%), and ΔcsgD group (2.1%). Similarly, among the crop gavage chickens, the WT strain group also had the highest infection percentage in eggs (10.4%), followed by the ΔcsgA group (8.5%), ΔadrA group (7.5%), ΔbcsA group (1.9%), and ΔcsgD group (1.0%). Our results indicate that the genes csgD and bcsA help vertical transmission of S. Enteritidis in chickens.Abattoir post-mortem inspections offer a useful tool for animal disease surveillance. The present cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the prevalence of rumen mucosa, lung, and liver lesions in 153 randomly selected batches of finishing beef cattle through a post-mortem inspection at the abattoir. At least 15 animals per batch were inspected at slaughter by two veterinarians for a total of 2,161 animals (1,376 bulls; 785 heifers) coming from 80 Italian commercial farms. Rumens were inspected by recording as binary variables (presence/absence) signs of hyperkeratosis, ruminitis, ulcer, and star scars. Similarly, lungs were inspected for signs of pneumonia and livers for signs of lipidosis, abscesses, and/or adherence. Hyperkeratosis of the mucosa and signs of ruminitis were detected in 58 and 30% of the inspected rumens, respectively. Ruminal star scars were more prevalent in bulls than in heifers (18 vs. 11%; P less then 0.05). Signs of severe pneumonia were observed in 10% of the lungs; abscess and/or entify and lower the risk factors for that specific health issue. Knowledge of post-mortem inspection data along with the implementation of the proposed benchmarking system should help farm veterinarians to improve herd management from a health and welfare perspective.
