Elimination of hosts' cytotoxic molecules and evasion of host immune response is often mediated by proteins secreted by the parasites. The aim of this review is to summarise existing knowledge on fish immune responses against monogeneans. Results gleaned from experimental infections illustrate the various interactions between parasites and the innate and adaptive immune system of the fish. The involvement of monogenean molecules (mainly inhibitors of peptidases) in molecular communication with host immune system is discussed.The present study was designed to determine the modulatory effects of arginine and citrulline dietary supplementation on the immune condition and inflammatory response of European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Four diets were manufactured a control diet (CTRL) was formulated to meet the indispensable amino acids profile established for seabass. Based on this formulation, three other diets were supplemented with l-arginine at two different levels (0.5% and 1%, ARG1 and ARG2, respectively) and l-citrulline at 0.5% (CIT). Fish were fed these diets for 2 or 4 weeks under controlled conditions. At the end of 4 weeks, fish from all dietary treatments were intraperitoneally-injected with Photobacterium damselae piscicida and sampled after 4, 24 our 48 h. Immune status was characterized by a lymphocyte time-dependent decrease regardless of dietary treatment, whereas peroxidase values dropped in time in fish fed ARG1 and ARG2 and was lower at 4 weeks in fish fed ARG1 than in fish fed CTRL. Up-regulation of several genes was more evident in ARG1-and CIT-fed fish, though pro-inflammatory cytokines were down-regulated by CIT dietary treatment. Following immune stimulation, seabass fed ARG1 showed a decrease in neutrophils and monocytes circulating numbers. On the other hand, expression of 17 selected immune and inflammatory responses genes was barely affected by dietary treatments. Based on the analyzed parameters, results suggest an active role of dietary arginine/citrulline supplementation in modulating immune defences that seem to translate into a suppressed immune repertoire, mostly at the cell response level. The observed changes due to citrulline dietary supplementation were in part similar to those caused by arginine, suggesting that citrulline might have been used by macrophages as an arginine precursor and then engaged in similar immune-impairment leading mechanisms.Glycinin is a major protein and antinutritional factor of soybean. However, how dietary glycinin affect intestinal immune function of fish were largely unknown. In this study, we used juvenile grass carp as a model to investigate the impacts of glycinin on intestinal immune function of fish and involved mechanisms. We set three treatments including control, glycinin and glycinin + glutamine in this trial. For immune components, results revealed that compared with control group, glycinin group had lower acid phosphatase activities in the foregut, midgut and hindgut, lower C3 and C4 content, and lower mRNA abundances of IgM, IgZ, hepcidin, LEAP-2A, LEAP-2B and β-defensin-1 in the midgut and hindgut rather than foregut of grass carp. For pro-inflammatory cytokines and relevant signaling, glycinin elevated mRNA abundances of IL-1β, IL-8, IL-12p35, IL-12p40 and IL-17D in the midgut and IL-1β, IFN-γ2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12p35, IL-12p40 and IL-17D in the hindgut, and increased protein abundances of PKC-ζ and nuclear NF-κB p65 in the midgut and hindgut in comparison to control. For anti-inflammatory cytokines and relevant signaling, glycinin reduced mRNA abundances of TGF-β1, TGF-β2, IL-4/13B (rather than IL-4/13A), IL-10 and IL-11 in the midgut and hindgut, and reduced p-mTOR (Ser 2448), p-S6K1 (Thr 389) and p-4EBP1 (Thr 37/46) protein abundances in the midgut and hindgut rather than foregut. Co-administration of glutamine with glycinin could partially enhance intestinal function and reduce intestinal inflammation compared with glycinin treatment. However, the response of P. vannamei hemocytes to S. eriocheiris infection has not been extensively studied. In this study, we conducted full-length transcriptome and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) analyses of P. vannamei hemocytes by a challenge test with S. eriocheiris. Following assembly and annotation, there were 8077 high-quality unigenes. A total of 1168 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, including 792 up-regulated and 376 down-regulated genes by differential expression analysis. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis showed that the up-regulated DEGs were mainly clustered into immune system process, defense response, cell cycle and organelle organization. On the other hand, the down-regulated DEGs included that genes that were mainly clustered into metabolic processes related to organic compounds, metabolic process and cellular metabolic process. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis of DEGs indicated that the pivotal gene interactions were connected to stress response, immune system process and cell cycle.
