This report describes 33 confirmed cases of "Taenia asiatica" taeniosis in Tokyo, Japan, and six adjacent prefectures between 2010 and 2019. Of the 33 cases, 28 were domestic infections. Thirty patients had histories of eating raw pork and/or beef liver. It was highly suspected that the sources of infection were foreigners from T. asiatica-endemic countries who had worked on pig farms in these prefectures. We postulated that the rate of domestic infection has decreased as a result of legal regulations that have banned the serving of raw and undercooked pig and cattle viscera in restaurants in Japan. Haplotype analyses of genetic markers revealed that "T. asiatica" in Japan are the descendants of hybrids of T. asiatica and Taenia saginata that originated from the Philippines and/or Taiwan. It is critical that close attention continues to be paid to domestic recurrences and imported cases of T. asiatica taeniosis, with the goal of communicating information on risk factors for this infection to consumers, pig farmers, restaurant owners, physicians, and visitors coming to Japan.

The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to evaluate the functional outcomes, radiologic outcomes, and revision rates following radial head arthroplasty (RHA) at a minimum of 8 years follow-up.

Two independent reviewers performed a literature search using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Only studies reporting on outcomes of RHA with a minimum of mean 8 years' follow-up were considered for inclusion.

Our search found 10 studies including 432 elbows (51% males), with average age of 50 years (15-93) and mean follow-up of 117 months (98-145) met our inclusion criteria. check details At final follow-up, the mean Mayo Elbow Performance Score and Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire score were 83 (45-100) and 17 (0-63) respectively, and 86% of patients reported having no or minimal pain. The overall dislocation, subluxation, ulnar neuritis, and infection rates were 2%, 4%, 3%, and 3%, respectively. The rates of radiologic loosening, radiolucency, degenerative change, and heterotopic ossification were 9%, 46%, 27%, and 38%, respectively. The overall surgical revision rates were 20%, with 3%, 15%, and 5% requiring RHA implant revision, removal of metal or implants, and arthrolysis, respectively.

Patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) have high rates of shoulder instability, which place them at increased risk for instability-related arthropathy. Many studies have assessed outcomes for both primary and revision shoulder instability procedures in this patient population, but there is a paucity of data regarding the outcome of shoulder arthroplasty in EDS patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results and complications of shoulder arthroplasty (SA) performed in a cohort of patients with EDS and compare them to a matched cohort of patients with no EDS.

Over an 11-year period, 10 patients with EDS were identified at a single institution who underwent primary SA (6 anatomic total shoulder arthroplasties [aTSAs], 4 reverse shoulder arthroplasties [RTSAs]). Shoulders were evaluated at a mean follow-up of 60 months (range 25-97 months). This cohort was matched 12 based on age, sex, and year of surgery, with patients who underwent SA for either primary osteoarthritis (OA) for aTSA or cuf 30%) and postoperative instability (2/10 patients; 20%) in this small case series was relatively high and should be considered when performing SA.

The potential of these molecules, their limited access from natural sources, and difficulty in large-scale isolation of individual HMOs for studies and applications have motivated the development of chemical syntheses and in vitro enzymatic catalysis strategies. Whole cell biocatalysts are emerging as alternative self-regulating production platforms that have the potential to reduce the cost for enzymatic synthesis of HMOs. Whole cell biocatalysts for the production of short-chained, linear and small monofucosylated HMOs have been reported but those for fucosylated structures with higher complexity have not been explored. In this study, we established a strategy for producing a difucosylated HMO, lactodifucotetraose (LDFT), from lactose and L-fucose in Escherichia coli. We used two bacterial fucosyltransferases with narrow acceptor selectivity to drive the sequential fucosylation of lactose and intermediate 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) to produce LDFT. Deletion of substrate degradation pathways that decoupled cellular growth from LDFT production, enhanced expression of native substrate transporters and modular induction of the genes in the LDFT biosynthetic pathway allowed complete conversion of lactose into LDFT and minor quantities of the side product 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL). Overall, 5.1 g/L of LDFT was produced from 3 g/L lactose and 3 g/L L-fucose in 24 h. Our results demonstrate promising applications of engineered microbial biosystems for the production of multi-fucosylated HMOs for biochemical studies.
