The VariCol and ModiCon processes are two variants of the simulated moving bed (SMB) process, characterized by the modulation of the length of zones of the chromatographic column train and the feed concentration. These features give more flexibility than the conventional operation, leading to essential improvements in the separation and purification of mixtures. The optimal performance comparison of these two variants, the hybrid formed by their combination, and the conventional SMB process are scarce in the literature. This comparison helps discover new characteristics of each single and combined operation mode and creates guidelines to select the appropriate operation mode for possible real applications. In this work, the performance comparison of the ModiCon, VariCol, ModiCon+VariCol, and SMB processes is carried out in terms of maximal throughput for specific product purity values. Particular emphasis is placed on both the ModiCon and the hybrid ModiCon+VariCol processes characteristics. A strategy for cocolumns. While current trends in Green Analytical Chemistry aim at reducing or simplifying sample treatment, food usually comprises complex matrices where direct analysis is not possible in most cases. In this context, sample treatment plays a pivotal role. Biogenic amines are naturally formed in many foodstuffs due to the action of microorganisms, while their presence has been associated with adverse health effects. In this work, the extraction of seven biogenic amines (cadaverine, histamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, spermidine, spermine, and tyramine) from beer samples has been simplified using laboratory filter paper as sorbent without any further modification. The analysis of the eluates by direct infusion mass spectrometry reduces the time of analysis, increasing the sample throughput. This simple but effective method enabled the determination of the analytes with limits of detection as low as 0.06 mg L-1 and relative standard deviations better than 11.9%. The suitability of the method has been assessed by analyzing eight different types of beers by the standard addition method.

Preoperative malnutrition has been correlated to postoperative complications in patients with advanced heart failure undergoing placement of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). We sought to determine whether nutritional risk scores could identify a subset of patients with an LVAD who were at high risk of adverse events.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all patients undergoing LVAD placement at a single center. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI), nutritional risk index (NRI), and nutrition risk in the critically ill (NUTRIC) score were calculated retrospectively from data abstracted from chart review. The primary endpoint was a composite of mortality and other adverse events associated with LVAD implantation. We used χ

or Fisher exact tests to compare these three indices against the primary outcome.

A total of 41 patients with a mean age of 57.2 ± 13.7 y and a mean body mass index of 29.3 ± 6.3 kg/m

underwent LVAD placement between 2011 and 2019. The composite outcome at 1 y occuients with an LVAD should be consider at high risk and given appropriate nutritional interventions.

Studies have demonstrated that the gut microbiota of people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is different from that of healthy individuals and could influence inflammation and oxidative stress. In this study, we sought to evaluate the effects of supplementation with a mixture of probiotics on cytokine plasma levels, inflammatory biomarkers, oxidative/nitrosative stress profile, and Disease Activity Score-28 in people with RA.

A randomized and double-blind placebo-controlled study was carried out with 42 participants with RA divided into two groups-the probiotic group (n=21), who over 60 d took a daily ingestion of probiotics in a sachet containing 109 CFU/g each of five freeze-dried strains Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Lactobacillus casei Lc-11, Lactococcus lactis Ll-23, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 and B. Infigratinib bifidum Bb-06; and the placebo group (n=21) who over 60 d took a daily ingestion of maltodextrin.

The probiotic group showed a significant reduction in white blood cell count (P=0.012) and tumor necrosis factor-α (P=0.004) and interleukin 6 plasma levels (P=0.039). However, no differences were observed in interleukin-10, adiponectin, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, ferritin, or Disease Activity Score-28 between the two groups. Regarding oxidative/nitrosative stress biomarkers, the probiotic group showed lower nitric oxide metabolites (P=0.004) and higher sulfhydryl group (P=0.028) and total radical-trapping antioxidant parameters (P=0.019) than the placebo group. However, lipid hydroperoxide and protein carbonyl did not differ between groups (P > 0.05).

The mixture of probiotics reduced inflammatory biomarkers and improved the oxidative/nitrosative profile in people with RA.

The market for food supplements is booming thanks to their increased consumption. European regulations include different ways in which vitamins and minerals are administered, without making it clear to the consumer whether one formulation has advantages over the other. The aim of this review was to compare the bioavailability of different forms of magnesium and analyze the differences between them.

Based on a PICO (population, intervention, comparison, outcome) research question, a search strategy was established for magnesium bioavailability studies comparing different forms in the PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. We found 433 studies, out of which 14 were finally selected.

Inorganic formulations appear to be less bioavailable than organic ones, and the percentage of absorption is dose dependent.

All magnesium dietary supplements can maintain physiological levels in healthy people without prior deficit, although this cannot be assured in older people or those with illnesses or previous subphysiological levels.
