To assess the association between postnatal growth and neurodevelopment at the age of 2years in extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGAN, < 28weeks' gestation). Retrospective population-based cohort study including all live born ELGAN in 2006-2012 in Switzerland. Growth parameters (weight, length, head circumference, body mass index) were assessed at birth, at hospital discharge home, and 2-year follow-up (FU2). Unadjusted and adjusted regression models assessed associations between growth (birth to hospital discharge and birth to FU2) and neurodevelopment at FU2. A total of 1244 infants (mean GA 26.5 ± 1.0weeks, birth weight 853 ± 189g) survived to hospital discharge and were included in the analyses. FU2 was documented for 1049 (84.3%) infants. The mean (± SD) mental and a psychomotor development index at 2FU were 88.9 (± 18.0) and 86.9 (± 17.7), respectively. Moderate or severe neurodevelopmental impairment was documented in 23.2% of patients. Changes of z-scores between birth and discharge and b predictor of neurodevelopmental outcome during infancy might be smaller than previously assumed.

Here, we evaluated whether systemic dexamethasone (DEX) dosage in prophylactic antiemetics affected the incidence of OM in anthracycline-containing regimens. Patients receiving anthracycline-containing regimens for breast cancer were divided into high- and low-DEX dose groups and retrospectively evaluated. The incidence of all-grade OM in the first cycle in the high- and low-dose groups was 27.3% and 53.5%, respectively, and was significantly lowered by increasing the DEX dose (P  less then  0.01); thus, the study met its primary endpoint. The result in all treatment cycles was also significant (P = 0.02). In contrast, the incidence of dysgeusia was similar between the high- and low-dose groups in the first and all cycles (13.6% and 16.3% in the first cycle [P = 0.79] and 27.3% and 34.9% in all cycles [P = 0.42], respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that low DEX dosage was an independent risk factor for all-grade OM development. In conclusion, our study suggests that DEX attenuates OM in anthracycline-containing regimens for breast cancer treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a dysregulated immune disorder in children, associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection or malignancies. In severe forms, HLH presents with signs and symptoms of hyperinflammation that progress to life-threatening multiorgan failure. Intervention with an extracorporeal immunomodulatory treatment utilizing a selective cytopheretic device (SCD) could be beneficial. The SCD with regional citrate anticoagulation selectively binds the most highly activated circulating neutrophils and monocytes and deactivates them before release to the systemic circulation. Multiple clinical studies, including a multicenter study in children, demonstrate SCD therapy attenuates hyperinflammation, resolves ongoing tissue injury and allows progression to functional organ recovery. We report the first case of SCD therapy in a patient with HLH and multi-organ failure.

Depression is a major health problem linked to alcohol consumption; it might also be associated with the alcohol flushing response. Therefore, we examined the association between the alcohol flushing response and the risk of depression in the general population of South Korea. Our analysis included 139,380 participants and used data from the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey. Only current drinkers were considered in the analysis. The relationship between the alcohol flushing response and depression was evaluated by logistic regression analysis using SAS 9.4. Of the participants, more than one-third were current flushers; compared to never flushers, current flushers had a significantly greater risk of depression (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-1.34, P  less then  0.001). Former flushers did not exhibit a risk of depression.
