Marina Carini and Marco De Amici, Guest Editors of this Special Collection dedicated to NMMC 2019 and the 40th Anniversary of the DCF-SCI, look back at key events in the Italian medicinal chemistry community within the past year and introduce the collection.Porous carbon and metal oxides/sulfides prepared by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursors have been widely applied to the realm of supercapacitors. However, employing MOF-derived metal phosphides as positive and negative electrode materials for supercapacitors has scarcely been reported thus far. Herein, two types of MOFs are used as the precursors to prepare CoP and FeP4 nanocubes through a two-step controllable heat treatment process. Due to the advantages of composition and structure, the specific capacitances of FeP4 and CoP nanocubes reach 345 and 600 F g-1 at the current density of 1 A g-1 , respectively. Moreover, a quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor is assembled based on charge matching principle by employing CoP and FeP4 nanocubes as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively, which exhibits a high energy density of 46.38 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 695 W kg-1 . Furthermore, a solar-charging power system is assembled by combining the quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor and monocrystalline silicon plates, substantiating that the device can power the toy electric fan. This work paves a practical way toward the rational design of quasi-solid-state asymmetry supercapacitors systems affording favorable energy density and long lifespan.

The prevalence of autonomic neuropathy (AN) is high in patients with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis but remains unknown in transthyretin wild-type cardiac amyloidosis (ATTRwt-CA). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of AN in patients with ATTRwt-CA using Sudoscan®, a non-invasive method used to provide evidence of AN in clinical practice and based on measurement of electrochemical skin conductance at the hands and feet (fESC).

A series of 62 non-diabetic patients with ATTRwt-CA was prospectively included over 2years and compared with healthy elderly subjects, matched by age, gender, and body mass index. The presence of AN was defined as electrochemical skin conductance at the hands <60μS and/or fESC <70μS, and conductances were analysed according to clinical, biological, and echocardiographic data. Mean fESC was significantly lower in patients with ATTRwt-CA compared with elderly controls 68.3 (64.1-72.5) vs. 76.9 (75.6-78.1) μS (P<0.0001), respectively. Prevalence of fESC <70μS was higher in ATTRwt-CA patients than in controls 48.4% vs. 19.9%, P<0.05. Univariate analysis showed that fESC, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, creatinine plasma levels, and echocardiographic global longitudinal strain were associated with decompensated cardiac failure and death. Multivariate analysis revealed that fESC was an independent prognostic factor, and Kaplan-Meier estimator evidenced a greater occurrence of cardiac decompensation and death in patients with fESC <70μS, P=0.046.

To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy and wound healing effect of atmospheric pressure cold plasma (APCP) on an infected pressure ulcer (IPUs) model that was created on rats.

A total of 18 rats was divided into APCP, silver sulfadiazine (AgS) and control groups to have six rats in each group. A third-grade pressure ulcer model was developed on the back of each of the rats, and pressure ulcers were infected by inoculation of multidrug resistance (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A portable dielectric barrier discharge device was used to generate cold air plasma. APCP, AgS and saline treatments were carried out once a day for 14days. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated on days 5, 10 and 15. Surface area, depth, pressure ulcer healing scale (PUSH) and microbiological examination were used for evaluation.

The results of this study showed that APCP was superior over AgS application and irrigation with saline by means of the reduction in surface area and depth of ulcers. Furthermore, PUSH score in plasma group was lower than other groups and histopathological examination showed a higher epithelization in APCP group. The average reductions of MDR P. aeruginosa for APCP, AgS and control groups were determined as 5·64±1·87, 1·91±0·90 and 1·22±0·88 log10 CFU per gram tissue, respectively.
