Additionally, theaflavin treatment reduced phosphorylated Akt, phosphorylated mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), and c-Myc levels with increased expression of the tumour suppressor p53. This review summarizes the current in vitro and in vivo evidence available investigating the anti-cancer effects of theaflavins across various cancer cell lines and animal models.Construction workers executing manual-intensive tasks are susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) due to overexposure to awkward postures. Automated posture recognition and assessment based on wearable sensor output can help reduce MSDs risks through early risk-factor detection. However, extant studies mainly focus on optimizing recognition models. There is a lack of studies exploring the design of a wearable sensing system that assesses the MSDs risks based on detected postures and then provides feedback for injury prevention. This study aims at investigating the design of an effective wearable MSDs prevention system. This study first proposes the design of a wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensing system, then develops the prototype for end-user evaluation. Construction workers and managers evaluated a proposed system by interacting with wearable sensors and user interfaces (UIs), followed by an evaluation survey. see more The results suggest that wearable sensing is a promising approach for collecting motion data with low discomfort; posture-based MSDs risk assessment has a high potential in improving workers' safety awareness; and mobile- and cloud-based UIs can deliver the risk assessment information to end-users with ease. This research contributes to the design, development, and validation of wearable sensing-based injury prevention systems, which may be adapted to other labor-intensive occupations.Since patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) share many biological features, detecting biomarkers that differentiate SZ and BD patients is crucial for optimized treatments. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is suitable for detecting subtle brain structural differences in patients with psychiatric disorders. In the present study, we adopted a neuroanatomically defined and manually delineated region of interest (ROI) method to evaluate the amygdalae, hippocampi, Heschl's gyrus (HG), and planum temporale (PT), because these regions are crucial in the development of SZ and BD. ROI volumes were measured using high resolution MRI in 31 healthy subjects (HS), 23 SZ patients, and 21 BD patients. Right hippocampal volumes differed significantly among groups (HS > BD > SZ), whereas left hippocampal volumes were lower in SZ patients than in HS and BD patients (HS = BD > SZ). Volumes of the amygdalae, HG, and PT did not differ among the three groups. For clinical correlations, there were no significant associations between ROI volumes and demographics/clinical symptoms. Our study revealed significant lower hippocampal volume in patients with SZ and BD, and we suggest that the right hippocampal volume is a potential biomarker for differentiation between SZ and BD.Endometrial cancer (EC) is treated according to the stage and prognostic risk factors. Most EC patients are in the early stages and they are treated surgically. However some of them, including those with high grade (grade 3) are in the intermediate and high intermediate prognostic risk groups and may require adjuvant therapy. The goal of the study was to find differences between grades based on an miRNA gene expression profile. Tumor samples from 24 patients with grade 1 (n = 10), 2 (n = 7), and 3 (n = 7) EC were subjected to miRNA profiling using next generation sequencing. The results obtained were validated using the miRNA profile of 407 EC tumors from the external Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort. We obtained sets of differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs with the largest amount between G2 to G1 (50 transcripts) and G3 to G1 (40 transcripts) patients. Validation of our results with external data (TCGA) gave us a reasonable gene overlap of which we selected two miRNAs (miR-375 and miR190b) that distinguish the high grade best from the low grade EC. Unsupervised clustering showed a high degree of heterogeneity within grade 2 samples. MiR-375 as well as 190b might be useful to create grading verification test for high grade EC. One of the possible mechanisms that is responsible for the high grade is modulation by virus of host morphology or physiology.

Protein-bound uremic toxins are associated with cardiovascular disease and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. We investigated their association with clinical outcomes in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (CHD).

A prospective cohort study was conducted on 86 Taiwanese patients undergoing CHD. The predictors were indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate concentrations, with each analyzed as three tertiles. Outcomes were cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.

During a 25-month follow up period, there were 23 cardiovascular events and seven all-cause mortality events. In the crude survival analysis, the second indoxyl sulfate tertile was shown to be a powerful predictor of cardiovascular events compared with the third tertile (hazard ratio (HR), 3.14; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-8.94), and the first tertile was shown to have a poor but insignificant cardiovascular outcome (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 0.30-4.00). Moreover, the predictive power of the second indoxyl sulfate tertile for cardiovascular events remained after adjustment for confounders (HR, 5.42; 95% CI, 1.67-17.60).

An inverse U-curve relationship was observed between the total serum indoxyl sulfate level and cardiovascular events in our CHD patients. A large-scale study is needed to confirm this relationship.

In total, 132 preschool children were evaluated, of whom 60 (45.50%) were girls and 72 (54.5%) were boys. The distribution of the participants was from quarter 1 [n = 28 (21.2%)], quarter 2 [n = 52 (39.4%)], quarter 3 [n = 24 (18.2%)], and quarter 4 [(n = 28 (21.2%)], respectively. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2) was used to collect the data. The data show the main effects on quarter of birth factor in manual dexterity (MD; p less then 0.001), in aiming and catching (A&C; p less then 0.001), in balance (Bal; p less then 0.001) and in total test score (TTS; p less then 0.001). There are also statistical differences on gender factor in MD (p less then 0.001) and in TTS (p = 0.031). A significant effect was also found in the interaction between two factors (gender and quarter of birth) in MD (p less then 0.
