Larvae nutritional status determines their survivorship and growth, having also an impact on adult characteristics like longevity, body size, flight capacity or vector competence. During the adult stage, mosquito diet affects their survival rate, fecundity and host-seeking behaviour. It also affects mosquito susceptibility to infection, which may determine the vectorial capacity of mosquito populations. The aim of this review is to critically revise the current knowledge on the effects that both larval and adult quantity and quality of the diet have on mosquito life history traits, identifying the critical knowledge gaps and proposing future research lines. The quantity and quality of food available through their lifetime greatly determine adult body size, longevity or biting frequency, therefore affecting their competence for pathogen transmission. In addition, natural sugar sources for adult mosquitoes, i.e., specific plants providing high metabolic energy, might affect their host-seeking and vertebrate biting behaviour. However, most of the studies are carried out under laboratory conditions, highlighting the need for studies of feeding behaviour of mosquitoes under field conditions. This kind of studies will increase our knowledge of the impact of diets on pathogen transmission, helping to develop successful control plans for vector-borne diseases.In recent years, tire wear particles (TWP), as the significant proportion of microplastics (MPs), has adsorbed much attention due to its widespread presence in aquatic ecosystem. Compared with typical MPs, TWP exists significant differences in composition, additives, characteristics and so on. With TWP and polypropylene (PP) as target MPs, Cd2+ and Pb2+ as target pollutants, the adsorption-desorption characteristics of heavy metal ions on original and aged MPs were studied. Compare with the PP, the SBET of TWP increased more significantly after the UV ageing process. Meanwhile, the zeta potential of TWP increased from -8.01 to -14.6 mV and PP from -5.36 to -9.52 mV, and the surface of the TWP were more negatively-charged. In addition, the hydrophilicity of MPs enhanced due to the increased oxygen-containing functional groups after ageing process. Compared with PP, the physicochemical properties of TWP changed more obviously during UV ageing processes. The adsorption results showed that the pseudo-second-order model could better describe the adsorption processes of Cd2+ and Pb2+ on MPs. In this work, a novel kind of carbon adsorbent (EC) derived from CO2 and activated ECs with modified structure via a facile chemical method using H2 and KOH were prepared. The synthetic carbon materials (EC, EC-H2, and EC-KOH) were then applied to remove tetracycline (TC). The kinetics of adsorption for these three carbon materials all well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental data of adsorption isotherm had good compatibility with Langmuir and Freundlich models (R2 > 0.90), but the Temkin model was the most applicable for all adsorbents (R2 > 0.98). A super-high adsorption capacity of EC-KOH obtained from Langmuir fitting was 933.56 mg g-1, which was much higher than that of EC-H2 (538.91 mg g-1) and EC (423.30 mg g-1), possibly due to its larger specific surface area (SBET), pore volume, and specific surface chemical structure. Moreover, it was found that surface functional groups and large aperture of adsorbents had a positive effect on adsorption rate. More adsorption sites and surface functional groups of adsorbents were beneficial to enhance the adsorption affinity.
