Streptococcus iniae (Cases 1 and 3), Escherichia coli (Case 2), and an unidentified member of the family Pasteurellaceae (Case 1) were identified in postmortem tissues through bacterial culture followed by standard and molecular identification methods. After the loss of two calves, a series of vaccinations were administered to the dam during the third pregnancy to enhance transplacental and colostral transfer of antibodies to the calf. The third calf did not survive, and the source of the bacterial infection in these three calves was undetermined. Prior to and after the birth of the fourth calf, nutritional and nutraceutical supplements were provided to the dam and calf. Additionally, pest control around the barn was enhanced. The fourth calf survived. Pygmy hippopotamus calves at the age of 13-15 wk may have increased susceptibility to bacterial infection, possibly due to waning maternally derived immunity. The findings in these cases, combined with a previous association of S. iniae in pygmy hippopotamus deaths, suggest that this bacterium is an especially important pathogen of the endangered pygmy hippopotamus.Transmission of tuberculosis typically requires close and prolonged contact with an infected individual. However, several cases of transmission between elephants and from elephants to humans or other animals without direct contact or over long distances have been reported. Elephants have been shown to be capable of producing aerosolized bacterial droplets, suggesting a possible route of transmission that is magnified by the size and force of the elephant respiratory tract. To investigate the dispersion and viability of aerosolized bacteria generated from the elephant respiratory tract, a pre-existing model with a proxy organism was used. A six-stage Andersen sampler was used to detect the proxy organism, a commensal elephant respiratory bacterium, at different locations around an elephant barn at a zoo. The amount of proxy organism detected at various time points and distances from the elephants indicates they are capable of dispersing viable bacterial aerosols further than humans can. The concentration of these aerosols is dependent on proximity to the elephants and does not remain at a high level for prolonged periods of time. These findings support the model of aerosol-mediated transmission of bacteria from elephants and can be used to improve disease management practices and prevent the spread of pathogens from elephants in zoos and other facilities.Echocardiography is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that can provide instantaneous information about cardiac function, but it is uncommonly used by veterinarians to assess reptilian patients. Echocardiograms were performed on 14 clinically healthy, adult prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis), and cardiac measurements were taken in a horizontal and vertical position. Cardiac parameters including ventricular volume in systole and diastole, as well as the diameter of the left atrium, pulmonary artery, and paired left and right aortic arches were obtained. No evidence of cardiac disease was noted in any of the study animals. Males had a greater percentage of ventricular volume change (VVC) than females in the vertical position (P = 0.043). Infectious diseases can pose a challenge to conservation efforts, and the greater sage-grouse is susceptible to West Nile virus (WNV). This study measured the humoral response to a commercially available WNV vaccine in a zoo-based conservation breeding population of greater sage-grouse. Since the initiation of the conservation program in 2014, all sage-grouse at the Calgary Zoo's Wildlife Conservation Centre have been vaccinated against WNV. Juveniles received a series of three vaccines every 2-3 wk starting around 2 wk of age; adults had received the same vaccination series at hatch and had since been boostered annually. Antibody titers were measured on 60 serum samples from 36 juveniles and 18 adults collected in 2018 using either serum neutralization or plaque-reduction neutralization methods. No detectable antibody response was noted in juveniles after their second (n = 17) or third booster vaccinations (n = 23). Only 35% of 20 adult samples collected had positive titers even after multiple years of vaccination. Only two cases of adverse vaccine reaction have been noted in this species with over 800 doses being administered between 2014 and 2020. Despite a lack of antibody response in juveniles and most adults, there have been no WNV-associated deaths in this population even with confirmed cases of WNV in free-ranging greater sage-grouse and other species in the area during this time frame, suggesting that cell-mediated immunity may be of greater importance for protection against WNV infections in this species. The initial vaccination series was changed in 2019 to a series of only two doses of vaccine, and no clinical cases or mortality from WNV occurred in 2019 or 2020 with the new protocol.
