The bone's structural stiffness shown here complements the geometrical classification of the jawbone types with a fundamental mechanical/structural property delineating the coupling between the mechanical properties and the geometry. The adopted approach is not limited to the jawbone and applies in principle to other bone types. From a clinical standpoint, the results presented here complement not only the basic mechanical aspects of the geometrical characterization, but also provide a starting point for future studies on dental implant placement and stability, the latter being directly related to the structural stiffness.Currently, the pathogenesis of nontraumatic heterotopic ossification (HO), e.g., bone-like tissue in calcific tendinopathy remains unclear. Here, we report a 75-year-old, right-handed Japanese woman who had been on hemodialysis for 3 years and was admitted to our hospital to evaluate pain and swelling of the right forearm. She worked as a cook, and her main job over the 3 most recent years had been the frequent and continuous shredding of cabbage. A radiograph showed the highly radiopaque material on the dorsal aspect of the right wrist and in the right shoulder. The biopsy of this radiopaque material revealed HO with marrow, as well as calcified material. Histomorphometric analysis of the HO identified a severe type of osteitis fibrosa with a fibrous tissue volume to total volume of 19.8% (>0.5% required for diagnosis) and an osteoid volume to bone volume of 20.0% (>15% required for diagnosis). We found more woven bone-like tissue than lamellar bone-like tissue. However, the intact parathyroid hormone level was 3-times the normal upper limit with 203 pg/mL, but histomorphometric analysis of the right iliac crest revealed normal bone structure. These findings indicate that the frequent and continuous shredding action with the right hand contributed to the nontraumatic HO localized on the dorsal aspect of the right wrist.Combination therapy of active vitamin D3 with some bisphosphonates (BPs) has been reported to be clinically beneficial. However, combination therapy of eldecalcitol (ELD) with BP has to date not been validated as to whether it is beneficial in the clinical setting. Preclinical studies suggested that simultaneous treatment with ELD and some BPs is more effective than monotherapy. However, the relative potency of various BPs, when used in combination with ELD, is completely unknown. In this study, we examined and compared the effects of risedronate (RIS), alendronate (ALN), and minodronate (MIN) alone or in combination with ELD on bone mass, microarchitecture, strength, and material properties in ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats aged 13 weeks. RIS, ALN, MIN, and ELD were administered five times weekly for 16 weeks. Micro-computed tomography analysis, compression test, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging analysis were performed 16 weeks after treatment initiation. Trabecular and cortical bone mineral density (BMD) in the fourth lumbar vertebra (L4) significantly increased in the RIS + ELD, ALN + ELD, and MIN + ELD groups compared with the vehicle group. These results suggest that the combination therapy of BP and ELD is beneficial and warrants further clinical trials.Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Wuhan was locked down from 23 January 2020 to 8 April 2020, a total of 76 days. It is well known that the electricity consumption is a direct reflection of human activity. During the lockdown of Wuhan, most of human activities were forbidden. The reduction in human activity would inevitably lead to a reduction in electricity consumption. At the same time, anthropogenic emissions of air pollutants would also be reduced with the reduction of human activity. In this study, the correlation between electricity consumption and air pollutants during lockdown was discussed in detail. The result showed that the drop in pollutants concentrations in January should be attributed to the washout effect of rainfall rather than the lockdown. The decrease of electricity consumption in the secondary industry might play a significant role on the decrease of PM 2.5 and NO2 concentrations in Wuhan in February 2020. The decrease in NO2 concentration in March should be attributed to the reduction of pollutants emissions from the tertiary industry, which means that more attention should be paid to the control of NO2 emission in the tertiary industry. Due to reduced emissions from local sources, the role of long-range transport sources might be more significant during the lockdown of Wuhan. By PSCF analysis, southeast of Wuhan could be the major potential emission sources of PM 2.5 , especially in the northern part of Jiangxi province. It was suggested that stricter regulation of pollutants emissions should be implemented in this area.

Prior studies of mixed insurance populations have demonstrated poor adherence to surgical standard of care (SOC) for penile cancer. We used data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) cancer registry linked to Medicare to calculate SOC adherence to surgical treatment of penile cancer in insured men over the age of 65, focusing on potential social and racial disparities.

This is an observational analysis of patients with T2-4 penile cancer of any histologic subtype without metastasis in the SEER-Medicare database (2004-2015). SOC was defined as penectomy (partial or radical) with bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. We calculated proportions of those receiving SOC and constructed multivariate models to identify factors associated with receiving SOC.
