In this study, 36 adults were asked to learn two sets of L2 spoken words through translation versus simulated social interactive videos (social learning). Brain activation during word learning was measured using fMRI. Greater activation was observed in the bilateral superior temporal sulcus, posterior middle temporal gyri, and right inferior parietal lobule during social learning as compared with translation learning. Furthermore, higher activity in the right temporal parietal junction, right hippocampus, and motor areas was observed during the initial stage of social learning, with the more successful performance being at the time of overnight testing. We argue that social learning may strengthen the link from new L2 forms to rich L2 semantic representations wherein memory properties are embodied, multimodal, and richly contextualized.Brain imaging methods such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) have already been used to decipher the functional and structural brain changes occurring during normal language development. However, little is known about the differentiation of the language network after an early lesion. In particular, the role of perilesional tissues, as opposed to undamaged brain areas in the functional recovery of language functions after an early insult, remains unclear. In this review article, we provide an overview of the extant literature using functional and structural neuroimaging data revealing the signatures of brain plasticity underlying near-normal language development.Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with an action language deficit. Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) deteriorates verbal fluency, but may improve verb naming more than nouns in PD. We investigated effects of grammatical class (verb vs noun), action content (action vs non-action) of words and unilateral, bilateral or no stimulation on naming. Nouns were named more accurately and faster by controls and PD participants; however the noun-verb difference was higher for PD participants. Language, executive and visuospatial function deficits in PD accounted for this difference between PD group and controls. Noun-verb difference was accounted by differences in imageability, familiarity and complexity of the stimuli. Non-action words were named more accurately than action words in the overall sample. Stimulation conditions did not have an effect on naming. This study in Turkish-speaking participants show an action language deficit due to underlying cognitive deficits without an STN DBS effect in PD.

Muscle tone and neurodevelopmental status were assessed with the Standardized Infant NeuroDevelopmental Assessment (SINDA). Perinatal information was obtained by questionnaire and medical records. Univariable and multivariable statistics were applied.

Ninety-two infants (8%) had atypical muscle tone in 3-4 body parts (impaired pattern), while atypical muscle tone in 1-2 body parts was observed in 50%. Isolated leg hypotonia and isolated arinically relevant pattern is associated with perinatal risk and less favourable neurodevelopmental status.Motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) and neurofeedback (NF) with electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are commonly used for motor function improvement in healthy subjects and to restore neurological functions in stroke patients. Generally, in order to decrease noisy and redundant information in unrelated EEG channels, channel selection methods are used which provide feasible BCI and NF implementations with better performances. Our assumption is that there are causal interactions between the channels of EEG signal in MI tasks that are repeated in different trials of a BCI and NF experiment. Therefore, a novel method for EEG channel selection is proposed which is based on Granger causality (GC) analysis. Additionally, the machine-learning approach is used to cluster independent component analysis (ICA) components of the EEG signal into artifact and normal EEG clusters. After channel selection, using the common spatial pattern (CSP) and regularized CSP (RCSP), features are extracted and with the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifiers, MI tasks are classified into left and right hand MI. The goal of this study is to achieve a method resulting in lower EEG channels with higher classification performance in MI-based BCI and NF by causal constraint. The proposed method based on GC, with only eight selected channels, results in 93.03% accuracy, 92.93% sensitivity, and 93.12% specificity, with RCSP feature extractor and best classifier for each subject, after being applied on Physionet MI dataset, which is increased by 3.95%, 3.73%, and 4.13%, in comparison with correlation-based channel selection method.
