Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas and an endogenous signaling molecule. Some studies involving cell lines have revealed the potential antibreast cancer effects of CO. Data on such effects in humans, however, are limited. Thus, we conducted a study on patients with CO poisoning (COP) to evaluate the effects of CO on the risk of breast cancer. We identified female patients who were diagnosed with COP over the period of 2002 and 2009 from the Nationwide Poisoning Database of Taiwan. For comparison, we selected females without COP from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Participants in the COP and comparison cohorts were matched on the index year, age, monthly income, and geographic region of residence at a 16 ratio. We followed up the two cohorts until the end of 2014 and compared their risks of developing breast cancer. We included 7053 participants with COP and 42,318 participants without COP. Participants with COP were at a lower risk of developing breast cancer than those without COP (0.7% vs. 1.0%, p  less then  0.001). Cox proportional hazard regression analyses revealed that COP was associated with a hazard ratio of 0.67 (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.50-0.90) for breast cancer after we adjusted for age, monthly income, geographic region, and comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Our result provides evidence for the potential protective effects of CO against breast cancer in humans. Further studies that directly evaluate the potential effects are warranted.Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and is associated with inflammation. AF patients have elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines known to promote vascular leak, such as vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF). However, the contribution of vascular leak and consequent cardiac edema to the genesis of atrial arrhythmias remains unknown. Previous work suggests that interstitial edema in the heart can acutely promote ventricular arrhythmias by disrupting ventricular myocyte intercalated disk (ID) nanodomains rich in cardiac sodium channels (NaV1.5) and slowing cardiac conduction. Interestingly, similar disruption of ID nanodomains has been identified in atrial samples from AF patients. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that VEGF-induced vascular leak can acutely increase atrial arrhythmia susceptibility by disrupting ID nanodomains and slowing atrial conduction. Treatment of murine hearts with VEGF (30-60 min, at clinically relevant levels) prolonged the electrocardiographic P wave and ential factor in the development and progression of AF.Fungal green biosynthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) is a promising eco-friendly method for mass-scale production. In the present study Ag, CuO and ZnO nanoparticles were biogenically synthetized using a cell filtrate of a strain of Trichoderma harzianum as a reducer and stabilizer agent. The structure, morphology and physicochemical properties of the NPs were characterized through transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, wide angle X-ray scattering and thermogravimetric analysis. Since nanotechnology could offer promising applications in agricultural area, we evaluated the ability of the NPs to reduce the growth of important fungal phytopathogens as Alternaria alternata, Pyricularia oryzae and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Silver and CuO NPs reduced significantly the mycelial growth of A. alternata and P. oryzae in a dose dependent manner. This is the first report of a multiple extracellular biosynthesis of NPs from T. harzianum and the first time that CuO and ZnO NPs were obtained from this fungus. In addition, we highlighted the rapid production of NPs, as well as, the potential of Ag and CuO for the control of phytopathogens. On the other hand, the three types of NPs could be easily and sustainably produced on a large scale with the chance of having multiple applications in biotechnological processes.Persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Overlapping associations with MI of weighted genetic risk scores (wGRS) for coronary artery disease (CAD) and RA is unknown in a population-based setting. Data from the prospective Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT2 1995-1997 and HUNT3 2006-2008) were used. wGRS added each participant's carriage of all risk variants weighted by the coefficient from published association studies. Published wGRS for CAD and RA were analysed in Cox regression with MI as outcome, age as analysis time, and censoring at the first MI, death, or 31.12.2017. 2609 of 61,465 participants developed MI during follow-up (mean 17.7 years). The best-fitting wGRS for CAD and RA included 157 and 27 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, respectively. In multivariable analysis including traditional CAD risk factors, the CAD wGRS was associated with MI [hazard ratio = 1.23 (95% CI 1.18-1.27) for each SD increase, p  less then  0.0001] in RA patients (n = 433) and controls. The RA wGRS was not significant (p = 0.06). this website Independently from traditional risk factors, a CAD wGRS was significantly associated with the risk for MI in RA patients and controls, whereas an RA wGRS was not. The captured genetic risk for RA contributed little to the risk of MI.Applications from finance to epidemiology and cyber-security require accurate forecasts of dynamic phenomena, which are often only partially observed. We demonstrate that a system's predictability degrades as a function of temporal sampling, regardless of the adopted forecasting model. We quantify the loss of predictability due to sampling, and show that it cannot be recovered by using external signals. We validate the generality of our theoretical findings in real-world partially observed systems representing infectious disease outbreaks, online discussions, and software development projects. On a variety of prediction tasks-forecasting new infections, the popularity of topics in online discussions, or interest in cryptocurrency projects-predictability irrecoverably decays as a function of sampling, unveiling predictability limits in partially observed systems.
