Clear information and supportive care are necessary for patients with cancer to effectively manage their condition. Traditionally, healthcare professionals offer information and support via the so-called formal care route. In addition, research has found favorable effects of informal care provided by volunteer programs and informal "walk-in support centers." Less research has been done on initiatives that combine formal and complementary informal supportive care for patients with cancer. This systematic literature study aimed to discover (1) which types of initiatives are described in the literature, (2) what type of care they offer, and (3). how they are evaluated in terms of outcome measures.

We performed a systematic literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. Studies were included if the collaboration between one type of formal care together with one type of informal care was explicitly mentioned in the article. The search was not restricted to a specific cancer type.

A total of 4869e viewed as success factors in the involvement of volunteers in formal care practices.

Initiatives combining formal and informal supportive care hold the potential of added value in terms of providing emotional support for, and providing information to, patients with cancer. Support and specific training for volunteers can be viewed as success factors in the involvement of volunteers in formal care practices.

We aimed to investigate whether the Manchester procedure affects the risk and prognosis of endometrial cancer.

All Danish residents have a personal number permitting linkage of nationwide registers on the individual level enabling epidemiological studies with lifelong follow-up. We performed a nationwide historical cohort study including Danish women born before 2000 undergoing the Manchester procedure (N = 23,935) during 1977-2018. We included women undergoing anterior colporrhaphy as a reference group (N = 51,008) because of comparable inclination to consult a doctor and clinical similarities. Main outcomes were the number of women diagnosed with endometrial cancer, the stage of endometrial cancer at time of diagnosis, and cancer-specific and overall mortality. We followed the cohort until endometrial cancer/death/emigration/hysterectomy/31 December 2018. We performed chi-square test for trend to compare the diagnostic stage and Cox regressions to analyze the risk of endometrial cancer and mortality. The models were adjusted for age, calendar year, income level, and parity.

During follow-up (median 13 years), 271 (1.13%) women were diagnosed with endometrial cancer after the Manchester procedure and 520 (1.05%) after anterior colporrhaphy. The adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for endometrial cancer was 1.00 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.86-1.16]. No difference in stage of cancer was found (p = 0.18) nor when stratifying for calendar year. The HR for cancer-specific mortality and overall mortality after the Manchester procedure was 0.87 (95% CI 0.65-1.16) and 0.93 (95% CI 0.77-1.12), respectively.

The Manchester procedure does not affect the risk or prognosis of endometrial cancer.

Long-term durability and functional outcome of laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy (LSH) remains to be confirmed. We set out to assess the development of surgical outcome in women with increasing minimal follow-up.

All women after LSH with anterior and posterior mesh extension operated for advanced apical uterine prolapse at Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire clinic from July 2005 to June 2020 were enrolled in this retrospective study. Last known follow-up information was used for the analysis and allocation into groups. The surgical success was defined as no prolapse beyond hymen, no symptomatic recurrence or no retreatment. Functional outcome was evaluated from validated questionnaires and presence of pelvic floor disorders. The outcomes were compared with preoperative state using chi-square and Fisher's test; p < 0.05 was considered significant.

In total, 270 patients after LSH with a follow-up of up to 14.5years were enrolled and divided into groups according to their last follow-up length ≥ 1 year 242, ≥ 3 years 112, ≥ 5years 76, ≥ 7years 45 and ≥ 10 years 18 women. Increase of minimal follow-up was associated with gradual decrease in surgical success. Rates of stress urinary incontinence were unchanged by the surgery, while anal incontinence and constipation rates decreased significantly; 14.5% of women were operated on for SUI in the follow-up. The PFDI-20, PFIQ-7 and VAS bother scores decreased significantly regardless of minimal follow-up length.

LSH with anterior and posterior mesh extension is a safe, effective and durable surgery with a positive long-term effect on quality of life. Geldanamycin in vivo Although the surgical success gradually decreases, LSH remains a surgical success in most women.

Biocompatible thin films of metallic glasses are manufactured with a selected composition of Zr65Cu35, known to exhibit remarkable mechanical properties and glass forming ability. Dense nanowell arrays spontaneously form in the ultrafast laser irradiation spot with dimensions down to 20 nm. The flared shape observed by transmission electron microscopy is ideal to ensure chemical or biological material immobilization into the nanowells. This also indicates that the localization of the cavitation-induced nanopores can be tuned by the density and size of the initial nanometric interstice from the columnar structure of films deposited by magnetron sputtering. In addition to the topographic functionalization, the laser-irradiated amorphous material exhibits structural changes analyzed by spectroscopic techniques at the nanoscale such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Results reveal structural changes consisting of nanocrystals of monoclinic zirconia that grow within the amorphous matrix. The mechanism is driven by local oxidation process catalyzed by extreme temperature and pressure conditions estimated by an atomistic simulation of the laser-induced nanowell formation.

In pediatric patients treated with levamisole to prevent relapses of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), a transient and non-progressive rise in creatinine levels has been observed. It has been suggested that levamisole affects tubular secretion of creatinine. However, other potential mechanisms - nephrotoxicity and interference with the analytical assay for creatinine - have never been thoroughly investigated.

In three steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) patients with elevated plasma creatinine levels, treated with levamisole 2.5mg/kg every other day, serum cystatin C was determined. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated using the full age spectrum for creatinine and the full age spectrum for cystatin C equations. Interference of levamisole with the enzymatic creatinine assay was tested using spare human plasma of different creatinine concentrations spiked with levamisole (4, 20, and 100µM).

Three patients who received levamisole with elevated plasma creatinine levels had normal serum cystatin C levels and corresponding estimated GFR. There was no assay interference.

Levamisole increases plasma creatinine levels, which is most probably due to impaired tubular secretion of creatinine since there was no assay interference and patients had normal eGFR based on serum cystatin C. However, interference of metabolites of levamisole could not be excluded. To monitor GFR, cystatin C in addition to creatinine should be used and be measured before and during levamisole use.

For years, there have been discussions on whether neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy followed by surgery (nRCT-S) is superior to definitive radiochemotherapy (dRCT) as the standard of care for locoregionally advanced oesophageal cancer (OC). This retrospective study aimed to evaluate our patient cohort regarding differences in survival and recurrence between nRCT‑S and dRCT.

Data from 68patients with dRCT and 33patients with nRCT‑S treated from 2010 to 2018 were analysed. Comorbidities were recorded using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). Recurrence patterns were recorded as in-field or out-field. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to compare survival data (overall survival [OS], progression-free survival [PFS], and locoregional control [LRC]).

Patients with nRCT‑S showed significantly lower CCI values than those with dRCT (p = 0.001). The median follow-up was 47months. The median OS times were 31 months for nRCT‑S and 12 months for dRCT (p = 0.009), the median PFS times were 11and 9 months, respectively (p = 0.057), and the median LRC times were not reached and 23 months, respectively (p = 0.037). The only further factor with asignificant impact on OS was the CCI (p = 0.016). In subgroup analyses for comorbidities regarding differences in OS, the superiority of the nRCT‑S remained almost significant for CCI values 2-6 (p = 0.061).

Our study showed significantly longer OS and LRC for patients with nRCT‑S than for those with dRCT. Due to different comorbidities in the groups, it can be deduced from the subgroup analysis that patients with few comorbidities seem to especially profit from nRCT‑S.

This was likely the 'tip of the iceberg' in difficulties in this cohort and may predict patterns in a future 'tsunami' of cases. Methods A review of referrals from ED in those ≥ 65 years was conducted, from April to September in 2019 and 2020. Number of presentations, referral reason, alcohol issues, presentation method and assessment outcome were examined. Results From May 2020, there was increased referrals in all ages, except those aged 65 and older. Only 6.7% of referrals were ≥ 65years in 2020 (11% in 2019), with more referred for anxiety, suicidality and overdose, with no BPSD (behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia) referrals recorded. There was an increase presenting with psychosis secondary to mental illness, alcohol issues and brought by emergency services, with a decrease in those linked with services. Conclusions There was a probable unmet burden of psychiatric needs in this age-group with potentially increased distress and reduced supports, in less presentations.
