Studies evaluating alcohol consumption and cardiovascular diseases have shown inconsistent results.

We performed a systematic review of peer-reviewed publications from an extensive query of Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Ovid Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Scopus, and Web of Science from database inception to March 2022 for all studies that reported the association between alcohol consumption in terms of quantity (daily or weekly amounts) and type of beverage (wine, beer or spirit) and cardiovascular disease events.

The study population included a total of 1,579,435 individuals based on 56 cohorts from several countries. We found that moderate wine consumption defined as 1-4 drinks per week was associated with a reduction in risk for cardiovascular mortality when compared with beer or spirits. However, higher risk for cardiovascular disease mortality was typically seen with heavier daily or weekly alcohol consumption across all types of beverages.

It is possible that the observational studies may overestimate the benefits of alcohol for cardiovascular disease outcomes. Although moderate wine consumption is probably associated with low cardiovascular disease events, there are many confounding factors, in particular, lifestyle, genetic, and socioeconomic associations with wine drinking, which likely explain much of the association with wine and reduced cardiovascular disease events. Further prospective study of alcohol and all-cause mortality, including cancer, is needed.

Therefore, concerns exist that MP ingestion increases the uptake and accumulation of organic chemicals by aquatic organisms. However, it is unclear if this pathway is relevant compared to other exposure pathways. Here we compared the bioconcentration capacity of two hydrophobic organic chemicals (i.e., chlorpyrifos and hexachlorobenzene) in a freshwater fish (Danio rerio) when exposed to chemicals through water only and in combination with contaminated polyethylene MPs. Additionally, a suite of biomarker analyses (acetylcholine esterase, glutathione S-transferase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase) was carried out to test whether MPs can enhance the toxic stress caused by chemicals. Two 14-day semi-static experiments (one for each chemical) were carried out with adult fish. Each experiment consisted of (1) a control treatment (no chemicals, no MPs); (2) a treatment in which fish were exhigher importance. As particulate matter and heavy metals in the atmosphere affect the atmospheric quality, they pose a threat to human health through the respiratory system. Vegetation can remove airborne particles and purify the atmosphere. Plant leaves are capable of effectively absorbing heavy metals contained by particulates. To evaluate the effects of different garden plants on the particulate matter retention and heavy metal accumulation, the seasonal changes of dust retention of five typical garden plants were compared in the industrial and non-industrial zones in Hangzhou. Results revealed that these species differed in dust retention with the descending order of Loropetalum chinense > Osmanthus fragrans > Pittosporum tobira > Photinia × fraseri > Cinnamomum camphora, which were related to the microstructure feature of the leaf. BRD3308 clinical trial These species also showed seasonal variation in dust retention, with the highest in summer, followed by winter, autumn, and spring, respectively. The total suspended particle per unit leaf area was higher in the industrial site (80.54 g m-2) than in the non-industrial site (19.77 g m-2). Leaf particles in different size fractions differed among species, while coarse particles (d > ten μm) predominated in most cases. The L. chinense and C. camphora plants accumulated the greatest Pb and Ni compared to other plants. Overall, L. chinense was the best suitable plant species to improve the air quality.Artificial light at night (ALAN) alters circadian rhythms in animals and therefore can be a source of environmental stress affecting their physiology and behaviour. The impact of ALAN can be related to the increased light level, but also to the spectral composition of night lighting. Previous research showed that many species can be particularly sensitive to the LED light, but it is unclear if they respond to its broad spectrum or specifically to the blue light wavelength. In this study, we tested whether dim ALAN (2 lx) differing in the spectral quality (warm white LED, blue LED, high-pressure sodium HPS light) modifies behaviour and changes oxidative status in two nocturnal freshwater shredder species Dikerogammarus villosus and Gammarus jazdzewskii (Gammaroidea, Amphipoda). Our experiment revealed that ALAN, irrespective of its spectral quality, did not affect the oxidative stress markers in cells (the level of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation). However, ALAN changed the gammarid behaviour in a species-specific manner, which can potentially reduce the fitness of the shredders. Dikerogammarus villosus avoided all types of light compared to darkness. Therefore, confined to the shelter, D. villosus may have fewer opportunities to forage and/or mate. Gammarus jazdzewskii was sensitive only to the narrow-spectrum blue light, but did not respond to the HPS and white LED light. Avoidance is a typical response of gammarids to natural light, thus the disruption of this behaviour in the presence of common ALAN sources can increase the predation risk in this species. To summarize, behavioural modifications induced by ALAN seem more pronounced than changes in physiology and can constitute the main driver of disturbances in the processing of organic matter in freshwater ecosystems by invertebrate shredders.Air pollution can adversely affect the immune response and increase the severity of the viral disease. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between symptomatology, clinical course, and inflammation markers of adult patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalized in Poland (n = 4432) and air pollution levels, i.e., mean 24 h and max 24 h level of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) and particulate matter 11 × 103/mL. Except for the mean 24 h PM10 level, the exceedance of other air pollution parameters was associated with increased odds for oxygen saturation less then 90%. Exposure to elevated PM2.5 and B(a)P levels increased the odds of oxygen therapy and death. This study evidences that worse air quality is related to increased severity of COVID-19 and worse outcome in hospitalized patients. Mitigating air pollution shall be an integral part of measures undertaken to decrease the disease burden during a pandemic of viral respiratory illness.Particle number concentration (PNC) is an important parameter for evaluating the environmental health and climate effects of particulate matter (PM). A good understanding of PNC is essential to control atmospheric ultrafine particles (UFP) and protect public health. In this study, we reviewed the PNC studies in the literature aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding about the levels, trends, and sources of PNC in China. The PNC levels at the urban, suburban, rural, remote, and coastal sites in China were 8500-52,200, 8600-30,300, 8600-28,400, 2100-16,100, and 5700-19,600 cm-3, respectively. The wide ranges of PNC indicate significant heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of PNC, but also are partly due to the different measurement techniques deployed in different studies. In general, it still can be concluded that the PNC levels at urban > suburban > rural > coastal > remote sites. Except for Mt. Waliguan (a remote site of 3816 m a.s.l.), other cities had the highest PNC in spring or winter and the lowest in summer or autumn. Long-term changes of PNCs in Beijing and Nanjing indicated that PNCs of Nucleation and Aitken modes had substantially declined following stricter emission controls in recent years, but more frequent new particle formation (NPF) events were observed due to reduction in coagulation sink. Overall, traffic emission was the most dominant source of PNC in more than 94.4% of the selected cities around the world, while combustion2 (the energy production and industry related combustion source), background aerosol, and nucleation sources were also important contributors to PNC. This study provides insights about PNC and its sources around the world, especially in China. A few recommendations were suggested to further improve the understanding of PNC and to develop effective PNC control strategies.Bladder cancer is the 10th most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide with 5-year survival rate around 70%. The current first-line treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is transurethral resection of bladder tumours followed by intravesical Mycobacterium Bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy. However, tumor recurrence rate is still high ranging from 31% to 78% within five years. To avoid radical cystectomy, intravesical combination therapies have been developed as salvage treatments to overcome BCG failure. Recent advances in diagnostics thanks to tumor molecular profiling and in treatment such as development of immunotherapies provides more treatment options beyond BCG treatment. This also goes hand-in hand with formulation advances to deliver these new therapies where traditional drug delivery systems might not be suitable, which in turn is completed by challenges to deliver drugs via the intravesical route. In this article the aim was to provide an in-depth analysis of the current developments of intravesical combination therapies, ranging from relatively simple combinations of mixing existed intravesical therapeutic agents (immunotherapies and chemotherapies) to the combined formulations containing advanced gene therapies and targeted therapies, with special focus on therapies that have made it to the clinical trial stage. In addition, recent attempts to utilize device-assisted treatments and novel drug delivery platforms are included. This review also highlights the limitations that still need to be overcome such as the inadequate studies on newly explored drug carriers and proposes potential directions for future work to overcome BCG-failure.Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. Several million people are estimated to have affected with this condition worldwide. Skin cancer generally includes melanoma and non-melanoma with the former being the most dangerous. Chemotherapy has been one of the key therapeutic strategies employed in the treatment of skin cancer, especially in advanced stages of the disease. It could be also used as an adjuvant with other treatment modalities depending on the type of skin cancer. However, there are several shortfalls associated with the use of chemotherapy such as non-selectivity, tumour resistance, life-threatening toxicities, and the exorbitant cost of medicines. Furthermore, new drug discovery is a lengthy and costly process with minimal likelihood of success. Thus, drug repurposing (DR) has emerged as a new avenue where the drug approved formerly for the treatment of one disease can be used for the treatment of another disease like cancer. This approach is greatly beneficial over the de novo approach in terms of time and cost.
