Many patients with gastric cancer present with late stage disease. Palliative gastrectomy remains a contentious intervention aiming to debulk tumour and prevent or treat complications such as gastric outlet obstruction, perforation and bleeding.

We conducted a systematic review of the literature for all papers describing palliative resections for gastric cancer and reporting peri-operative or survival outcomes. Data from peri-operative and survival outcomes were meta-analysed using random effects modelling. Survival data from patients undergoing palliative resections, non-resective surgery and palliative chemotherapy were also combined. This study was registered with the PROSPERO database (CRD42019159136).

We reviewed the clinical utility of perfusion (Q)-single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT for diagnosing pulmonary embolus (PE) in patients hospitalized with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2).

Following the World Health Organization's declaration of a global pandemic, our department policy recommended Q-only SPECT/CT for all patients undergoing nuclear medicine evaluation for suspected PE to reduce the risk of aerosolization of respiratory droplets. We performed a retrospective review of sequential patients admitted with COVID-19 imaged with Q-SPECT/CT between March 17, 2020, and June 30, 2020, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This study aimed to develop a novel biofunctionalized surface for binding plasma microvesicles (PMVs) based on a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) approach. A new lactadherin (LACT)-functionalized surface was prepared and examined for monitoring PMVs. Moreover, two different strategies of LACT immobilization on a silicon surface were applied to compare different LACT orientations. A higher PMV to LACT binding efficiency was observed for LACT bonded to an αvβ3 integrin-functionalized surface compared with that for LACT directly bonded to a glutaraldehyde-modified surface. Effective binding of PMVs and its components for both LACT immobilization strategies was confirmed using spectral ellipsometry and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry methods. The proposed PMV capturing system can be used as a foundation to design novel point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices to detect and characterize PMVs in clinical samples. The advances in the application of biotechnological tools not only have continuously improved the sensitivity, selectivity, and detection range for biosensors but also have simultaneously unveiled new challenges and restrictions for further improvements. This review highlights selected aspects of whole-cell biosensing of heavy metals using optical transducers. We have focused on the progress in genetic modulation in regulatory and reporter modules of recombinant plasmids that has enabled improvement of biosensor performance. Simultaneously, an attempt has been made to present newer platforms such as microfluidics that have generated promising results and might give a new turn to the optical biosensing field.
