In this study, selected PCB congeners (IUPAC numbers 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180) were quantified in 34 stations of Chabahr bay and around it in the Makran region of Iran. The sum of total PCB concentrations varied from below the detection limit to 485 ng kg-1 dry weight of sediment. Based on the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines, the effect of detected PCBs was negligible for aquatic organisms. According to the dominance of PCB 28 and 52 with average range of 62 to 100% of total PCBs, maritime transportation and atmospheric deposition appear to be the important source of PCBs in this region. Further, the presence of components of commercial products such as ClophenA50 appears to be one of the probable sources.Microplastics as a new class of environmental contaminants have become the hot issue of global concern. We conducted quantitative and qualitative experiments to investigate microplastics in oyster, seawater and sediment along the Zhuhai coastline. The soft tissues of oysters were digested with potassium hydroxide (10%) and hydrogen peroxide (30%), seawaters and sediments with hydrogen peroxide (30%) to degrade organic matter, and analyzed using a digital camera, optical microscopy and micro-ATR-FTIR. The abundance of microplastics were in the range of 0.14-7.90 n/g in oysters (wet weight), 10.00-27.50 n/L in seawaters and 0.053-0.26 n/g in sediments. The fiber and fragment shape, black color, 101-500 μm of size and polyethylene composition were all classified as the major constituents of microplastics. The level of contaminants in oysters was correlated to those in their surrounding environments. Therefore, oysters may serve as a promising sentinel species for the indication of microplastic pollution in the coastal zone of Zhuhai.Oil spills have become a major source of pollution. This paper reports on developing mathematical models for monitoring transport of non-volatile aliphatic hydrocarbons by water and sediments using equations of transport and mass transfer. The models were validated using results from a simulated stagnant water mangrove swamp polluted with crude oil. From the result, non-volatile aliphatic hydrocarbons transported through water at 0.25 m and 1 m for month 1 is 335.75 μg/l and 0.062 μg/l for experiment and 360.0 μg/l and 0.181 μg/l for model respectively. While month 5, was 1505.37 μg/l and 15.78 μg/l for experiment and 1300.77 μg/l and 28.94 μg/l for model respectively. These and others reported show that the models developed can adequately predict the transport of non-volatile aliphatics.This conference report summarizes the current challenges of researching microplastics pollution in the ocean as debated by international experts and stakeholders at a workshop held in San Sebastián, Spain, 1-2 October 2019. The transdisciplinary, co-learning approach of this report stressed the need to incorporate multiple perspective in solving the problem of microplastics and resulted in three proposed actions (i) filtering microplastics from waste waters; (ii) mandatory ecolabels on plastic products packages; and (iii) circular economy of packaging plastics.Algae-dominance in seagrass beds has been well recognized, however, the competitive relationship between seagrass and macroalgae along land-sea gradients and their ecological effects has received little attention. In this study, a field survey was conducted at the Yellow River Estuary to investigate the effects of macroalgal proliferation on seagrass and macrobenthic invertebrate communities. Our results suggested that strong competitive interaction existed between the two primary producers, and the positive or negative effects of macroalgae on seagrass growth varied along land-sea gradient. Furthermore, the dominant controlling factors on the biomass, density and diversity of macrobenthic invertebrate communities were found to vary accordingly, i.e., from features of the primary producers in the nearshore where macroalgae suppressed seagrass growth to hydrodynamic disturbance in the offshore where macroalgae facilitated seagrass growth. The aim of this study was to prepare a new degradable coating with free and nano-encapsulated Cumino cyminum L. essential oil (CCEO) with nanochitosan (Nch) base to evaluate the microbial, chemical and sensory properties of sardine fillet samples for 16 days at 4 °C. Nanoliposome using different soy lecithin ratios and cholesterol concentrations (600, 5010, 4020, and 3030) and technique of thin-film hydration-sonication, were prepared with a range of 140-164 nm size. Encapsulation efficiency (EE) and distribution of nanoliposomes size were calculated 0.80-0.90 and 49.85-73.01% respectively. To coat sardine fillet samples, nanoliposomes with the lower size of droplet and higher EE percent were selected. The outcomes indicated that coating treatments can effectively inhibit microbial growth and chemical spoilage reflected at lower pH, peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) (P less then 0.05). In fact, the results of chemical and microbiological characteristics showed that the samples treated with nanocitosan/nano essential oil (NEO) showed the lowest value among other treatments during the experimental period, in the following, Nch-EO, Nch and control. pH, PV, TBARs, total viable counts (TVC), total pseudomonads count (TPC), and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were 6.85, 0.03 (mg MDA/kg), 5.23 (mEq/kg), 3.67 (CFU/g), 3.47 (CFU/g), and 4.7 (CFU/g), respectively for Nch-NEO at the end of storage time. In addition, during the experimental period, the highest sensory properties were obtained for the Nch-NEO group. Encapsulation of CCEO reduces the rate of diffusion, thus increasing antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, as well as improving sensory properties. According to the results of this study, CCEO-encapsulated nanochitosan coatings can be used as a potent coating to increase sardine shelf life.

Our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) on completely resected Masaoka/Masaoka-Koga (M/MK) stage II/III thymomas.

We systematically searched four online databases and included studies that compared surgery alone versus surgery plus a PORT for completely resected M/MK stage II/III thymoma. The multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival were evaluated as the primary and secondary end points, respectively. We performed a subgroup analysis for OS with respect to M/MK stage II, III, and inseparable II/III cases. A generic inverse variance meta-analysis using a random model was conducted.

Five studies including 4746 patients (among them, 2408 patients received PORT) met our selection criteria. A meta-analysis of these five studies revealed that PORT was associated with a significantly better OS (HR= 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.57-0.83, p < 0.001, I

Although clinicians recognize covariation between opioid misuse with anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders, research on this topic has only recently accumulated. Progress in this domain is impeded by the lack of systematic and integrative research to better understand and treat these co-occurring problems. This paper represents the first attempt to systematically review the empirical literature examining relations between opioid use and misuse, and anxiety and depression. In the first section, we define key terms and describe the article selection strategy. In the second section, we review the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among individuals who use and misuse prescription and illicit opioids. In the third section, we review the magnitude of associations between anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders with opioid misuse, as well as highlight studies examining the longitudinal and temporal sequence of the relations between these variables.
