We unveil that neuronal megalin reduction affects physiological neuronal activity, leading to decreased neurite number, length and branching, and increasing neuronal susceptibility to a toxic insult. Finally, we unravel a new unexpected role of megalin in synaptic plasticity, by promoting the formation and maturation of dendritic spines, and contributing for the establishment of active synapses, both in in vitro and in vivo hippocampal neurons. Moreover, these structural and synaptic roles of megalin impact on learning and memory mechanisms, since megalin heterozygous mice show hippocampal-related memory and learning deficits in several behaviour tests. Altogether, we unveil a complete novel role of megalin in the physiological neuronal activity, mainly in synaptic plasticity with impact in learning and memory. Importantly, we contribute to disclose the molecular mechanisms underlying the cognitive and intellectual disabilities related to megalin gene pathologies. This scientific commentary refers to 'Single-subject grey matter network trajectories over the disease course of autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease', by Vermunt et al. The metaphor by which the body is understood as a machine gradually took hold of the public consciousness, changing the perception of society, about the role and purpose of the doctor. In this reality, the doctor-patient relationship, captive to the technical system, descends into dark and cold corners, drained by the mystery of human life. There are times when doctors, aware that their mechanistic training is not always enough to fulfil their vocation, realize that the medical act takes place on two levels divine and human, and their unity is ensured by the love of God. selleckchem The lack of this love gives way to evil, with the appearance of surprising medical failures, many of them unexplained rationally. In 2020 we celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Florence Nightingale and 110 years from her death (1820-1910). This gives us the opportunity to remember her life and her achievements. She is mainly known for her contribution to the foundation of modern nursing in the British Empire and subsequently to the world. Besides her personal engagement in the Crimean War, she organized a professional training for nurses, wrote the first textbook on nursing ("Notes on Nursing") and took public positions in favor of health care and philanthropic funding. She was a militant for the rights of the women and for social justice. She was a pioneer of medical statistics and hospital management. Her activity is acknowledged worldwide. We present a case of megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome (MMIHS) in a four days old female infant who presented with abdominal distension, bilious vomiting, massive hematuria and feeding intolerance which was first interpreted as Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS), referred to our department after iatrogenic gastric and colonic perforation. Berdon syndrome or MMIHS is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a massive enlarged bladder, distended abdomen, microcolon, functional obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract, and malrotation.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the CADIAX Compact 2 axiograph in confirming the presumptive clinical diagnosis of temporomandibular dysfunction, established according to the muscular-articular clinical examination.
A retrospective analytical study was carried out on 50 patients, aged between 21 and 62 years, 31 women and 19 men. A clinical diagnosis was established after masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and mandibular border limit movements were assessed. During the same day a computerized axiography (Cadiax Compact 2, Gamma, Vienna, Austria) was performed in order to confirm the diagnosis.
The study had a sensitivity of 100%, which means that the CADIAX device detected all clinically positive patients. On the other hand, the specificity of the study was 74%, representing the percentage of patients negatively diagnosed by CADIAX device out of the total number of patients clinically diagnosed as negative. The 88% accuracy shows the proportion in which the CADIAX device provides a diagnosis equal to the clinical one.
Of all the methods for investigating temporomandibular joint dysfunction, axiography is less invasive, does not irradiate the patient, it is relatively easy to use and it offers functional information about the TMJ function.

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and patterns of styloid process elongation in a general Lebanese population sample.
Digital panoramic radiographs of 489 Lebanese adults (218 males and 271 females, mean age of 47.56 ± 16.149) were included in this retrospective study. First, we screened for detection of elongated styloid process, then we analyzed these cases and classified the elongation types. Data obtained were transformed into SPSS v24 and descriptive and inferential analyses were done.
In our sample, elongated styloid process was seen in 76 cases (15.5%) (45/271 women and 31/218 men). Despite no significant gender predisposition, females were slightly more affected than males (59.2% females to 40.8% males). As for the age, elongation was significantly more likely to be present at 45-64 years of age. The right side was slightly more affected than the left side (86.8% vs. 76.3% respectively), with type 1 elongation as the most common. Nevertheless, bilateral elongation was much more common than unilateral elongation (63.2%).Interestingly, females were more likely to suffer from bilateral elongation (64.58%) compared to men (35.41%).
Elongated styloid process represents a common finding detected fortuitously on panoramic radiographs. Therefore, being a main feature in Eagle syndrome, dentists should be aware of this clinical entity and actively screen for it.
