Originally released in 2007 by the Hop Breeding Company, Citra quickly gained popularity for its ability to impart beer with desirable citrus and tropical fruit characteristics. Despite this, the variety is also known for its strong bittering potential. By combining the desirable aromas and flavors of Citra with Haas’ new LUPOMAX technology, brewers are now able to use less of the variety while still achieving their desired level of pungency.

To assess Citra77 and flavor qualities of Citra 77, 23 tasters blind to the brewery or the variety were asked to rate a beer made with the new hop on each of 17 aroma and flavor descriptors (citrus, tropical fruit, malt, etc). Tasters were asked to write-in their rating for each characteristic on a scale of 0 to 9 where a score of 0 meant they did not perceive that characteristic at all and a score of 9 meant that they perceived the characteristic as very strong. The ratings were compiled and plotted on a radar graph.

The results show that tasters rated this beer highly for its tropical fruit, citrus and malt qualities as well as its moderate bitterness and low vegetal notes. Tasters were less enthusiastic about the beer’s earthy/garlic, berry and onion/garlic characteristics. The majority of tasters felt that this beer would work well in IPA, but a good portion indicated that the hop could also be used successfully in other endorsed styles as well.

Citra 77 is an excellent cleaner for use on stainless steel, aluminum and other metal surfaces. The product can be applied with a brush, cloth or spray gun, but it is recommended that rubber or plastic gloves be worn to avoid skin irritation.
