Finally, recommendations for future research on the proper disposal and utilization of animal manure are proposed. More large-scale experiments are required to elucidate the precise mechanism behind the immobilization of HMs. The influence of additives (catalysts and HM stabilizers) and the influence of the type of solvent on HM transformation needs further study. The increasing freshwater ecosystem nutrient budget is a critical anthropogenic factor promoting freshwater eutrophication and episodic bloom of harmful algae which threaten water quality and public health. To understand how the eutrophic freshwater ecosystem responds in term of phytoplankton community structure dynamics to a sudden rise in nutrient concentrations, a microcosm study by nutrient addition bioassay was implemented in Xiangxi Bay (XXB) of Three Gorges Reservoir, China. Our results showed that dissolved trace elements supply adequately altered the phytoplankton community structure creating a regime shift from cyanobacteria-dominated to essentially Chlorophytes-dominated system, relative abundance (>70%). Combined N, P, and Si led to maximum growth stimulation accompanied by the highest chlorophyll yield (82.7 ± 14.01 μgL-1) and growth rate (1.098 ± 0.12 μgL-1d-1). N separate additions resulted in growth responses which did not differ while P -addition differed significantly (p∠0.05) with the control justifying a P limited system. Si enrichment stimulated diatom growth, relative abundance (20.62%) and maximum utility rate (USi = 83.37 ± 0.33%). This study also reveals that increasing nutrient loading from anthropogenic sources adequately decrease the ecological diversity (H  less then  1) and community overlap (CC ≤ 0.5) intensifying competition and succession which then select the fast-growing taxa to dominate and expand. Result points to the need for multiple nutrient control of N, P and Si loading into XXB through a prudent nutrient management protocol for lasting bloom mitigation in the tributary bay. Widespread contamination of agricultural soil with toxic metals such as cadmium (Cd) is a major threat to crop production and human health. Metallochaperones are a unique class of proteins that play pivotal roles in detoxifying metallic ions inside cells. In this study, we investigated the biological function of an uncharacterized metallochaperone termed OsHIPP29 in rice plants and showed that OsHIPP29 resides in the plasma membrane and nucleus and detoxifies excess Cd and Zn. OsHIPP29 was primarily expressed in shoots during the vegetative stage and in leaf sheath and spikelet at the flowering stage. It can be differentially induced by excess Cd, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn. To identify the function of OsHIPP29 in mediating rice response to Cd stress, we examined a pair of OsHIPP29 mutants, RNAi lines and transgenic rice overexpressing OsHIPP29 (OX) under Cd stress. Both mutant and RNAi lines are sensitive to Cd in growth as reflected in decreased plant height and dry biomass. In contrast, the OX lines showed better growth under Cd exposure. Consistent with the phenotype, the OX lines accumulated less Cd in both root and shoot tissues, whereas OsHIPP29 knockout led to higher accumulation of Cd. These results point out that expression of OsHIPP29 is able to contribute to Cd detoxification by reducing Cd accumulation in rice plants. Our work highlights the significance of OsHIPP29-mediated reduced Cd in rice plants, with important implications for further developing genotypes that will minimize Cd accumulation in rice and environmental risks to human health. Landfill leachate is challenging to treat due to its complex composition. Advanced oxidation processes such as Fenton process can be effective to treat leachate. Herein, a previously developed membrane electrochemical reactor (MER) was coupled with Fenton oxidation through providing synergistic benefits with the low solution pH, reduced organics, and ammonia removal/recovery. This two-stage coupled system reduced the leachate COD by 88%, much higher than that from the standalone Fenton process treating raw leachate. In addition, the usage of chemical reagents has been greatly reduced. At a dimensionless oxidant dose of 1.0, the coupled MER-Fenton system reduced the consumption of both FeSO4⋅7H2O and H2O2 by 39%, H2SO4 by 100%, and NaOH by 55%. Consequently, the sludge production was reduced by 51% in weight and 12% in volume. Despite electricity consumption by the MER, the coupled system cost $4.76 per m3 leachate less than the standalone Fenton treatment. More notably, direct Fenton oxidation removed only 21% of ammonia; in comparison the MER-Fenton system removed ammonia by 98% with the possibility for recovery at a rate of 30.6-55.2 kg N m-3 reactor d-1. Those results demonstrate that coupling MER with Fenton process could mitigate some inherent drawbacks of Fenton oxidation such as ineffective ammonia removal, high acid and chemical reagents dose requirements, and a large amount of sludge generation. This system may be moved towards practical applications by addressing a few challenges such as using renewable energy to power MER. In conventional membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment systems, Gram-negative bacterial population appears to be always outnumbered Gram-positive community. Thereby, acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), major signaling molecules utilized by Gram-negative bacteria, have been targeted for biofouling control in quorum quenching (QQ) based studies. learn more This study investigated the impact of AHL and autoinducer-2 (AI-2)-degrading QQ consortium on the selective accumulation of microbial communities in a QQ MBR (MBR-QQb). The results show that addition of the QQ consortium (in the form of beads) increased the filtration time of MBR-QQb by 3.5 times. The distribution of mixed liquor extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially the tightly bound (TB) proteinous EPS and the floc size were strongly affected by the QQ activity, and the endless 'battle' between QQ and quorum sensing (QS). More importantly, QQ induced the significant suppression of Gram-negative bacterial community. The average abundance of Gram-positive bacteria at the genus level in the biocake of MBR-QQb (51%) was significantly higher than that of the control MBR (11%) and the MBR with vacant beads (28%).
