Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages. As ethanol consumption increases from zero to very high, it is still unknown which metabolites are present at different times and which are essential to normal functioning. In this article, we used an intermittent-access 20% ethanol drinking paradigm to make Wistar male rats voluntarily drink large amounts of ethanol for 10, 20, 30, and 50 days, respectively. A hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance approach was used to investigate the time-dependent neurochemical metabolites spectra in the hippocampus, striatum, nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex. Multivariate pattern recognition techniques were used to analyze the hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra data. Metabolic profiling was obtained, differentiating the ethanol-treated and control rats. Adherence to medications can be associated with circumstances related to the patient, the pathology, cultural health beliefs, habits and quality of life. To investigate the association between adherence to pharmacological treatment and personality factors, sociodemographic and economic data in the elderly.

Cross-sectional and descriptive study. The population studied were elderly people attended by the Family Health Strategy of Porto Alegre, registered in the Brain Aging Program (PENCE), from March 2013 to November 2015. Sociodemographic data, pharmacological adherence and personality traits were evaluated. Exclusion criteria were incomplete data in the personality and pharmacological adherence assessments; cognitive impairment, evaluated using the instrument Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), or not having carried out this assessment.

Included were 123 individuals with a mean age of 71.35 ± 7.33 years, of which, 58.6% reported some level of non-adherence to their medication regime (low and moderate adherence). The elderly with low adherence had significantly higher mean scores in the Neuroticism factor, while those with high adherence had significantly higher mean scores in the Agreeableness and Conscientiousness factors.

The study suggests that pharmacological adherence in the elderly is negatively associated with the personality trait of Neuroticism, while the traits of Agreeableness and Conscientiousness have a positive association.
