The COVID-19 situation in Maldives have evolved since the epidemic began in March 2020 with unprecedented increase in cases since mid-July 2019 with over 8000 cases at the end of August 2020.

The aim of the sero-epidemiological investigation is to obtain a sense of the population exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 by measuring the seroprevalence of antibodies to COVID-19 in the general population.

A population-based, age-stratified prospective method was employed to find out the key epidemiological and serologic characteristics of COVID-19 virus in this study.

The results showed that seroprevalence in the population was 13%. The factors that were associated with antibody results included age (OR 4.0, CI 1.7-9.0), nationality (OR 12.9, CI 8.3-19.7), being diagnosed for COVID-19 (OR 24.7, CI 15.9-38.4) and having symptoms of COVID-19 (OR 2.0, CI 1.5-2.8). There was a gradual decrease in the antibody levels from 19 days to 250 days. The mean duration of the presence of antibodies in this study was found to be 124 days.

While the seroprevalence provides a measure that can be used to predict community transmission risk of the disease, the extent of functional immunity provided by antibody titres is still not clear. It is acknowledged that other mechanisms of protection such as T cell mediated immunity will play an important role in providing individual protection.

Lithium is a therapeutic option for the treatment of the acute phase of the bipolar disorder and long-term management of this disorder. However, it is estimated that 10 to 60% of patients do not properly response to this medication.

To investigate the role of MARK2 gene in response to lithium, we genotyped the MARK2 rs10792421 polymorphism in Iranian bipolar patients using amplification Refractory Mutation System-PCR.

Results of this study showed a significant association of this polymorphism with response to lithium. The A allele was more frequent in the responder than the non-responder group and also in the semi- responder group compared to the non-responder group in the codominant model of analysis. AA and AG genotypes were more frequent in both the responder and semi-responder groups compared to the non-responder group in dominant model of analysis.

Based on the findings of the current study, the rs10792421 variant of MARK2 gene could be considered as a potential biomarker for predicting the treatment outcome of bipolar disorder type 1 in Iranian population.

The growth of data volume on the experimentally determined binding sites raises qualitatively new problems for the analysis of gene expression regulation, prediction of transcription factors target genes, and regulatory gene networks reconstruction. Genome regulation remains an insufficiently studied though plants have complex molecular regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and response to environmental stresses. It is important to develop new software tools for the analysis of the TF binding sites location and their clustering in the plant genomes, visualization, and the following statistical estimates. This study presents application of the analysis of multiple TF binding profiles in three evolutionarily distant model plant organisms. The construction and analysis of non-random ChIP-seq binding clusters of the different TFs in mammalian embryonic stem cells were discussed earlier using similar bioinformatics approaches. Such clusters of TF binding sites may indicate the gene regulatory regions, enhancers and gene transcription regulatory hubs. CIA1 research buy It can be used for analysis of the gene promoters as well as a background for transcription networks reconstruction. We discuss the statistical estimates of the TF binding sites clusters in the model plant genomes. The distributions of the number of different TFs per binding cluster follow same power law distribution for all the genomes studied. The binding clusters in Arabidopsis thaliana genome were discussed here in detail.

Patients with repaired complete atrioventricular septal defect (CAVSD) represent an increasing portion of grown-ups with congenital heart disease. For repair of CAVSD, the single-patch technique has been employed first. This technique requires division of the bridging leaflets, thus, among other issues, long-term function of the atrioventricular valves is of particular concern.

Between 1978 and 2001, 100 consecutive patients with isolated CAVSD underwent single-patch repair in our institution. Hospital mortality was 11%. Primary endpoints were clinical status, atrioventricular valve function, and freedom from reoperation in long term. Follow-up was obtained contacting the patient and/or caregiver, and the referring cardiologist.

Eighty-three patients were eligible for long-term follow-up (21.0 ± 8.7, mean ± standard deviation [21.5; 2.1-40.0, median; min-max] years after surgical repair). Actual long-term mortality was 3.4%. Quality of life (QoL; self- or caregiver-reported in patients with Down syndlinical status and functional results are promising, particularly, in terms of atrioventricular valve function. Permanent pacemaker therapy results in a life-long need for surgical reinterventions.

The objective of this randomized placebo-controlled pilot-trial was to analyze effects of a mouth rinse containing 0.8% (w/w) of a quantified proanthocyanidin-enriched extract from Rumex acetosa (RA1) on microbiological, clinical, and cytological parameters in systemically healthy individuals without history of periodontitis, harboring P. g. intraorally. 35 subjects received a supragingival debridement (SD) followed by mouth rinsing (3 times daily) with either RA1 mouth rinse solution (test) or placebo (control) for 7 days as adjunct to routine oral hygiene. Supragingival biofilm samples were taken at screening visit, baseline (BL), 2, 4, 7 and 14 days after SD. P. g. and 11 other oral microorganisms were detected and quantified by rtPCR. Changes in the oral microbiota composition of one test and one control subject were assessed via high throughput 16S rRNS gene amplicon sequencing. Approximal Plaque Index (API) and the modified Sulcular Bleeding Index (SBI) were assessed at BL, 7- and 14-days following SD. Brush biopsies were taken at BL and 14 d following SD. Intergroup comparisons revealed no significant microbiological, cytological, and clinical differences at any timepoint. However, a significant reduction in SBI at day 14 (p = 0.003) and API at day 7 (p = 0.02) and day 14 (p = 0.009) was found in the test group by intragroup comparison. No severe adverse events were observed. The results indicate that RA1 mouth rinse is safe but does not seem to inhibit colonization of P. g. or improve periodontal health following SD.Bioassay guided study of Cleome viscosa Linn. (Cleomaceae) leaves led to the isolation of a new cembrenoid diterpene (1 ) and three known compounds (2  - 4 ) from the hexane extract. The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods such as NMR (1D and 2D), HRMS and IR and identified and afforded compound 1 , malabaric acid (2 ), stigmast-4-en-3-one (3 ) and stigmast-4-ene-3,6-dione (4 ). This is the first report of compounds 1 and 2 from C. viscosa Linn. Isolates were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity using in vitro cyclooxygenase enzyme (COX-1 and -2) inhibitory assays. The novel cembrenoid diterpene (1 ) exhibited IC50 values of 8.4 µM for COX-1 enzyme and 45.2 µM for COX-2 enzyme, respectively. Similarly, malabaric acid (2 ) exhibited IC50 values of 11.5 µM for COX-1 enzyme and 46.9 µM for COX-2 enzyme, respectively. Their inhibitory activities were in par with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. Sterols 3 and 4 gave IC50 values of 62.6 and 67.9 µM, respectively for COX-1 enzyme while indicating weak COX-2 enzyme inhibition. Lipid peroxidation inhibitory (LPO) and MTT assays were used to determine antioxidant activity of these compounds. Compounds 1  - 4 showed LPO inhibition with IC50 values between 82 and 100 µM and moderate antioxidant activity in the MTT assay. Biological activities reported for these compounds are for the first time and it support anecdotal medicinal claims of C. viscosa Linn. leaves. In this work, the conversion coefficients from air kerma to the eye lens dose were calculated for photon exposures using the detailed eye and head Monte-Carlo (MC) model with the Chinese adult parameters. To verify the MC model and the simulation method, the conversion coefficients from fluence to the eye lens dose for mono-energy electrons (0.7-12 MeV) were calculated and compared with other studies. Then the conversion coefficients from air kerma to the doses in the entire lens and in the sensitive volume were calculated, respectively, for mono-energy photons (0.01-50 MeV) at different incidence angles (0-90°, in step of 15°). A small difference was found between the calculated conversion coefficient and the ICRP recommended value. The difference could be mainly due to the difference in their geometry characteristic of the eye and head models. In addition, the uncertainty analysis of the calculated conversion coefficients was performed in detail. The calculated dose conversion coefficient of the eye lens can be used to evaluate the eye lens dose for Chinese occupational staffs in external photon fields. And it can be used to determine the personal absorbed dose in the eye lens Dp lens in photon reference radiation fields.Understanding the relationship between molecular markers and a phenotype of interest is often obfuscated by patient-level heterogeneity. To address this challenge, Chang et al. recently published a novel method called Component-wise Sparse Mixture Regression (CSMR), a regression-based clustering method that promises to detect heterogeneous relationships between molecular markers and a phenotype of interest under high-dimensional settings. In this Letter to the Editor, we raise awareness to several issues concerning the assessment of CSMR in Chang et al., particularly its assessment in settings where the number of features, P, exceeds the study sample size, N, and advocate for additional metrics/approaches when assessing the performance of regression-based clustering methodologies.
