Physio-biochemical adaptations of wheat landraces may have great importance in their growth, survival and yield under drought stress. Here, we evaluated the effects of drought stress on some defense systems of wheat cultivar "Sistan" (drought-sensitive) and landrace "Bolani" (drought-tolerant). Under drought stress, Bolani plants showed lower increases in hydrogen peroxide content compared to Sistan ones, which was accompanied with significant decrease in malondialdehyde and electrolyte leakage indices. Increasing the transcript levels and activity of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants along with phenylpropanoid metabolites improved relative tolerance to drought-induced oxidative stress, particularly in Bolani plants, results which may be confirmed by a significant decrease in the damage indices. In the phenylpropanoid pathway, the biosynthetic pathway of total phenol, flavonoids and anthocyanins was more active than lignin-biosynthetic pathway, which could early respond to drought stress. These results may be confirmed by their negative significant correlations with damage indices as well as a non-significant correlation of lignin with most enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in plants. Lower decrease of chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid contents in Bolani plants compared to Sistan ones indicated the relative stability of photosynthetic pigments under drought stress. Our results suggested that integrating metabolic pathways could coordinately alleviate oxidative stress that can lead to introducing suitable genetic sources for drought tolerance. Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) was biofortified with selenium (Se), as selenite and selenate, and iodine (I), as iodide and iodate, and their combinations through foliar spraying, to study absorption of these elements by the plants, separately and in combination. check details The effects on selected physiological and morphological traits and optical characteristics were monitored. Treatments with Se positively affected total chlorophylls and carotenoids, and leaf stomata dimensions. Addition of I decreased total chlorophylls and increased anthocyanins. In reflectance spectra of the leaves, specific colour regions differed significantly due to the different treatments. Reflectance in the UV correlated positively with Se and I contents of the leaves, which indicated lower demand for production of phenolic compounds. Differences in reflectance in UV part of the spectra could be a consequence of changes in the cuticle. The Se and I levels increased markedly in leaves and tubers, without loss of biomass or yield. Se had antagonistic effects on accumulation of I in leaves. The similar levels of Se and I in the leaves and tubers suggest that the transport of both elements in these plants occurs from the leaves to the tubers through the phloem. According to the Se and I contents in the kohlrabi tubers, biofortification with both elements simultaneously is feasible for human nutrition. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is common in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and continues to persist in many patients despite adequate OSA treatment. EDS in OSA is associated with decreased quality of life (QOL) as well as increased societal burden, which may impact health care utilization and costs. However, economic burden is often not the primary focus in the treatment of EDS in OSA. This targeted literature review aimed to examine the published literature on the economic burden of EDS in OSA. This review identified available literature using a targeted PubMed search strategy using search terms related to EDS in OSA in adults. Results demonstrate that there are few studies that detailed the direct costs associated with EDS in OSA, though several studies indicated an association between EDS in OSA and indirect economic burdens, including motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), near misses, work productivity, mood, and QOL. Data from the literature confirmed that persistent EDS in OSA following continuous positive airway pressure persists in 12%-65% of patients. Future studies should further describe the direct costs of EDS in OSA, quantify the cost associated with MVAs and lost work productivity, and detail QOL and social impacts of the condition. OBJECTIVES To ascertain the extent of injury surveillance and prevention practices currently in operation and the availability of qualified personnel across Rugby playing schools in the Republic of Ireland. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey design. SETTING Rugby playing schools across Ireland. PARTICIPANTS The Rugby games master, head Rugby coach or teacher/coach with knowledge of all Rugby activities in the school. RESULTS Ninety-three Rugby playing schools responded and reported 356 (97% male, 3% female) school Rugby teams. Rugby injuries were formally monitored in 86% of schools. Injury recorders were primarily coaches (61%). Physiotherapy provision was available in 28% of schools, 14% of schools provided access to a medical doctor and 44% of schools provided access to an S&C coach. Structured warm-ups were undertaken in 66% of schools, weekly gym sessions in 49% of schools and 31% of schools did not implement any formal injury prevention measures. CONCLUSIONS Injury monitoring practices, medical personnel accessibility and the frequency of injury prevention practices varies considerably across Rugby playing schools in Ireland. Future injury surveillance and prevention systems should be suitable for use by non-medical personnel and reflect the structural organisation of the school Rugby game so that data are not solely representative of the elite, well-resourced schools. Ziv-aflibercept (ziv-AFL) is a complex fusion protein which is widely used in hospitals for the treatment of colorectal metastatic cancer. Charge variants are critical attributes for assessing post-transitional modifications (PMTs) that have to be controlled during the development and manufacture of these proteins and until their administration to patients. Cation exchange (CEX) chromatography is a charge-sensitive analytical method that is well suited for analysing charge variants in proteins. The aim of this paper is to analyse the charge variants of ziv-AFL in the medicine (Zaltrap®) when fresh and when degraded. Two CEX chromatographic methods were compared for this purpose. The former was an adaptation of the method used in the first published study in which charge variants were analysed via pH gradient elution using volatile, low ionic strength buffers with direct coupling to high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry. The second method was developed and optimized during our research using the salt-mediated pH gradient mode and classical non-volatile, high ionic strength buffers which were incompatible with direct coupling with mass detection.
