We observed pronounced cognitive deficits in individuals with schizophrenia (p  less then  0.006), associated with more positive symptoms and medication dosage. Regression-mediation analyses showed that WM microstructure mediated the association between schizophrenia and language/processing speed/working memory/non-verbal memory. In addition, processing speed mediated the influence of diagnosis and WM microstructure on the other cognitive domains. Our study highlights the critical role of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. We further show that WM is crucial when trying to understand the role of cognitive deficits, given that it explains the association between schizophrenia and cognitive deficits (directly and via processing speed).Deep brain stimulation (DBS) to the superolateral branch of the medial forebrain bundle is an efficacious therapy for treatment-resistant depression, providing rapid antidepressant effects. In this study, we use 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (PET) to identify brain metabolic changes over 12 months post-DBS implantation in ten of our patients, compared to baseline. The primary outcome measure was a 50% reduction in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score, which was interpreted as a response. Deterministic fiber tracking was used to individually map the target area; probabilistic tractography was used to identify modulated fiber tracts modeled using the cathodal contacts. Eight of the ten patients included in this study were responders. PET imaging revealed significant decreases in bilateral caudate, mediodorsal thalamus, and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex metabolism that was evident at 6 months and continued to 12 months post surgery. At 12 months post-surgery, significant left ventral prefrontal cortical metabolic decreases were also observed. Right caudate metabolic decrease at 12 months was significantly correlated with mean MADRS reduction. Probabilistic tractography modeling revealed that such metabolic changes lay along cortico-limbic nodes structurally connected to the DBS target site. However, the natural resources of fruiting body are on the verge of depletion due to its long growth cycle and over exploitation. The growth and metabolism of macrofungi are known to depend on the diverse bacterial community. Here, we characterized the diversity and potential function of bacteria inhabiting in the fruiting body of the most widely applied S. vaninii using a combination method of high-throughput sequencing with pure culturing for the first time, and tested the biological activities of bacterial isolates, of which Illumina NovaSeq provided a more comprehensive results on the bacterial community structure. Total 33 phyla, 82 classes, 195 orders, 355 families, 601 genera and 679 species were identified in the fruiting body, and our results revealed that the community was predominated by the common Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Burkholderiales, Methylophilaceae (partly consistent with pure-culturing findings), and was dominated by the genera of distinctive Methylotenera and Methylomonas (yet-uncultured taxa). Simultaneously, the functional analysis showed that companion bacteria were involved in the pathways of carbohydrate transport and metabolism, metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis, etc. Hence, it was inferred that bacteria associated with fruiting body may have the potential to adjust the growth, development and active metabolite production of host S. vaninii combined with the tested results of indole-3-acetic acid and total antioxidant capacity. In this work, D-Phe, D-Ala, and D-Glu amino acids, which are the non-occurring enantiomeric form in the human body, and also D-Asp and DL-SeMet, have proved to be amyloidogenic regarding Aβ42 aggregation in TEM studies. These amyloidogenic amino acid enantiomers also widened Aβ42 fibrils up to 437% regarding Aβ42 alone, suggesting that Aβ42 aggregation is enantiomerically dependent. To inhibit enantiomeric-induced amyloid aggregation, selenium nanoparticles stabilized with chitosan (Ch-SeNPs) were successfully synthesized and employed. Thus, Ch-SeNPs reduced and even completely inhibited Aβ42 aggregation produced in the presence of some amino acid enantiomers. In addition, through UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence studies, it was deduced that Ch-SeNPs were able to interact differently with amino acids depending on their enantiomeric form. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a sensitive and highly selective two-dimensional liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for vitamin D2 analysis in mushrooms. After validation, the method was applied to four different mushroom species. The developed method with a one-step extraction procedure showed a limit of detection of 0.01 µg vitamin D2/g dry mass (DM), a limit of quantification of 0.05 µg vitamin D2/g DM, and recovery rates between 87.6 and 94.8%. The total run time including the re-equilibration of the columns for the next injection was 7.5 min. After adding increased concentrations of pure substance to Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes, and brown and white button mushrooms the standard addition plot showed excellent correlation coefficients (R2) of > 0.9994. Mean vitamin D2 concentrations were observed at 0.122 ± 0.007, 0.074 ± 0.005, 0.099 ± 0.007, and 0.073 ± 0.005 µg/g DM. The coefficient of variation (CV) was between 5.1 and 7.6%. This well-optimized, sensitive LC-MS/MS method, with a fast and simple sample preparation and a short run time, can be applied to future studies especially in different mushroom species with variable growing conditions. To retrospectively assess the histopathological particularities of explanted CyPass® Micro-Stent of patients with significant loss of endothelial cell density.

This is a case series of fourteen eyes from eleven patients who underwent CyPass® Micro-Stent implantation due to mild to moderate glaucoma and who subsequently suffered from loss of endothelial cell density. Therefore, the explantation of the device was necessary. In addition to the retrospective evaluation of the intraocular pressure and the endothelial cell density at the time of implantation and explantation, every surgically removed implant was histologically examined and evaluated.

Fourteen eyes of eleven patients were in total analysed. The patients-seven males and four females-had a mean age of 62.9years. The average time between CyPass implantation and explantation was 3.7years. Eight patients suffered from primary-open-angle glaucoma (POAG), while two patients had a pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) and one patient had low-pressure glauce extent of previous operations or with the presence of a prolonged postoperative inflammatory reaction.

Implants made of polyimides such as the CyPass® Micro-Stent are considered to be biocompatible, but there is no guarantee not to be obliterated or encapsulated. This is the first case series that has detected a foreign body granuloma in multiple eyes after CyPass implantation. However, there is no connection with the type of glaucoma, the extent of previous operations or with the presence of a prolonged postoperative inflammatory reaction.

The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the effects of intraocular macular lens implantation and visual rehabilitation on the quality of life of patients with geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Patients with bilaterally decreased near vision (not better than 0.3 logMAR with the best correction), pseudophakia, were included in the project. The Scharioth macula lens (SML) was implanted into the patients' better-seeing eye. Intensive visual rehabilitation of the ability to perform nearby activities was performed for 20 consecutive postoperative days. All subjects were examined before and after SML implantation ophthalmologically. The National Eye Institute 25-Item Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was administered before and 6months after surgery.

Twenty eligible patients with mean age 81years (63 to 92years) were included in the project 7 males and 13 females. Nineteen of them completed the 6-month follow-up. Near uncorrected visual acuity was 1.
