Stent placement for basilar artery (BA) stenosis remains a technical and clinical challenge. This retrospective study introduces the experience with the Apollo balloon-expandable stent (BES) for patients with symptomatic BA stenosis in a single centre in China. Sixty one patients who had undergone intervention for severe symptomatic BA stenosis between May 2012 and September 2018 were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent angioplasty and stenting with an Apollo BES and were followed-up continuously. The technical success rate was 100%. During the procedure, there was no vessel rupture or dissection. Two patients died due to perforator occlusion. One patient developed vasospasm with no symptoms. The rate of complications during the procedure was 4.91% (3/61). BA stent-related stroke or death rates were 4.9% at 30 days (3/61), 6.6% at 3 months (4/61), and 6.6% (4/61) at 6 months. One patient had stent occlusion at 6 months with no symptoms. Restenosis was found in five patients with degrees of restenosis greater than ≥ 50% without any symptoms. In this study, the Apollo BES appeared to be feasible for BA stenosis. Our experience may be valuable for reducing the number of complications. However, further study is needed.Antithrombotic therapy is a critical component of the management of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Rapid and profound inhibition of platelet reactivity has been shown to mitigate the ischemic risks and improve myocardial salvage. High residual platelet reactivity (HRPR) has been reported up to 4 or 6 h after loading dose of prasugrel or ticagrelor; therefore, multiple alternative strategies, including crushed or chewed oral tables or intravenous agents, have been investigated to provide a more rapid and sustained inhibition of platelet function and bridge the initial treatment gap. The FABOLUS FASTER is the first investigator-initiated, multicentre, open-label, prospective, randomized study to directly compare the pharmacodynamics effects of cangrelor, tirofiban, chewed or integer prasugrel. This study will add new insights in the management of antiplatelet therapy in patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI and might be hypothesis-generating for future clinical trials in this field. The trial is registered on clinicaltrials.gov NCT02978040, and EudraCT 2017-001065-24.Extranodal extension (ENE) is a significant prognostic factor in p16-negative head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma and is classified as N3b by the American Joint Committee on Cancer 8th edition. While most previous radiological studies have focused on the diagnostic performance of pathological ENE, radiologists should be able to provide more clinically relevant information on this entity. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical implications of ENE, to describe key imaging features of ENE with clinical and histopathological correlations and to discuss evaluation of ENE for clinical staging, treatment planning, and predicting the response to treatment. First, we discuss the basics of ENE, including definitions of pathological and clinical ENE and its association with imaging findings. Second, we describe the ENE extension pattern at each location according to level system. The crucial structures determining the choice of treatment include the deep fascia in the deep cervical layer, internal and common carotid arteries, and mediastinal structures. Invasion of the muscles, internal jugular vein, nerves, or mandible also affect the surgical procedure. Finally, we discuss assessment of nodal metastasis after chemoradiotherapy.Unsuitable pH is a major limiting factor for all organisms, and a low pH can lead to organism death. Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) peptides confer tolerance to abiotic stresses including salinity, drought, high and low temperature, and ultraviolet radiation same as the LEA proteins from which they originate. In this study, LEA peptides derived from group 3 LEA proteins of Polypedilum vanderplanki were used to enhance low pH tolerance. Recombinant Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) cells expressing the five designed LEA peptides were grown at pH 4, 3, and 2. The transformants showed higher growth capacity at low pH as compared to control cells. These results indicate that LEA peptide could prevent E. coli cell death under low pH conditions. The article explores effect of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) of Ag, Fe, and Mg metals on the growth activity of the medicinal mushroom Inonotus obliquus (Ach.Pers.) Pilát and the synthesis of biologically active compounds (polysaccharides, flavonoids, and melanins). It was found that all the studied NPs stimulated growth activity. AgNPs inhibited polysaccharide and flavonoid synthesis, and stimulated melanin synthesis by 140%. Using MgNPs was effective to increase the level of accumulation of endopolysaccharides, flavonoids, and melanin pigments. FeNPs significantly increased the yield of endopolysaccharides. CC-90011 This effect should be used for biosynthesis stimulation for polysaccharides, flavonoids, and melanins obtaining from I. obliquus cultivated in vitro. The results demonstrate the potential of the use of metal colloidal solutions NPs for the development of environmentally friendly and effective biotechnology to produce biologically active compounds by medicinal macromycete I. obliquus.Previously, it was reported that human amniotic membrane (AM) induced stem cells from human deciduous exfoliated teeth (SHED) endothelial-like-cell differentiation. This interesting effect of AM matrix on SHED demands further elucidation. Objective of this in vitro work was to study the effect of 24-h VEGF induced on SHED endothelial differentiation when seeded on acellular stromal side (SS) of AM matrix. Stemness of SHED was identified by flow cytometry. Cell attachment and morphological changes towards the matrix was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Protein expression of endothelial marker was examined by Western blot. The expression of stem cells and endothelial-specific gene markers of VEGF-induced SHED cultured on human AM was inspected via reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results showed SHED at both passages retain stemness property. Ang-1 protein was expressed in SHED. Cells treated with VEGF and cultured on AM transformed attached well to AM. VEGF-induced SHED expressed both stem cell and endothelial-specific markers throughout the treatments and timeline.
