Fifty of seventy-six (66%) owners pursued at least one staging recommendation and 69/140 (49%) owners pursued some kind of adjuvant treatment recommendation. Overall, 16/76 (21%) were adherent to staging recommendations with 20 adherent for the first year following surgery (26%). Forty-seven of 140 (34%) were adherent to treatment recommendations with 54 (39%) adherent for the first year. Owners that were adherent to restaging recommendations at one year following surgery were significantly more likely to pursue treatment for progressive disease (P = .014). All rights reserved.BACKGROUND The present study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary vitamin D intake and 10-year first fatal/nonfatal cardiovascular disease (CVD), conventional CVD risk factors and surrogate markers related to inflammation, coagulation, insulin resistance, liver and renal function. METHODS The ATTICA study was conducted during 2001-2012 including 1514 men and 1528 women (aged >18 years) from the greater Athens area, Greece. Dietary assessment was based on a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Daily intake of vitamin D was calculated using a standardised food database. see more Follow-up (2011-2012) was achieved in 2020 participants (n = 317 cases). RESULTS Ranking from first to third vitamin D tertile, CVD events were 24%, 17% and 12% for men (P = 0.002) and 14%, 10% and 11% for women (P = 0.59). Inverse associations between vitamin D and CVD in total sample [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.76 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.60-0.97] and in men (HR = 0.66 95% CI = 0.49-0.89) were observed, and lost after adjusting for inflammation/coagulation markers; for women, no significant trends were observed. Regarding 10-year onset of conventional risk factors, inverse associations of vitamin D with hypertension in men (HR = 0.62 95% CI = 0.39-0.99) and transition to metabolically unhealthy status in women (HR = 0.69 95% CI = 0.51-0.93) were observed. Significant inverse associations for C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and fibrinogen in both sexes, whereas these were revealed only in women for insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS Contradicting the neutral/modest associations in vitamin-D supplementation trials, increased food-generated vitamin D may protect against hard and intermediate CVD endpoints, implying different paths between sexes. © 2020 The British Dietetic Association Ltd.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Nutritional status influences growth and development, including that of the eye. BACKGROUND Myopia is inherently associated with eye growth and thereby possibly amenable to nutritional influence. see more A number of Asian studies have reported lower levels of serum zinc in myopic children. This study was designed to assess the relationship between serum zinc and myopia in the Korean population - using a subsample of participants from nationally representative data. METHODS Data from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010 were used to explore zinc status in relation to refraction. A total of 304 participants were analysed, ranging in age from 12 to 19 years. Serum zinc levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while refractive error was determined by non-cycloplegic autorefraction. Multivariate analysis was used to examine the association. RESULTS A significant majority of participants (n = 255; 84 per cent) were myopic. There was no significant difference in serum zinc levels between myopic and non-myopic children (p = 0.81). In multivariate logistic regression, serum zinc was not significantly associated with myopia after adjustment for age, gender, residence, body mass index, family income and recreational activity. Similarly, no relationship was observed between spherical equivalent refraction and serum zinc within the myopic group (p = 0.46). CONCLUSION In a subset of 12-19-year-old participants from the population-representative KNHANES study, no association was found between serum zinc and myopia. Ketamine, a kind of anaesthetic, can alleviate symptoms of major depressive disorder patients in a short time and is reported to be effective to treatment-resistant depression patients. The rapid and strong anti-depressant-like effects of ketamine cause wide concern. In addition to ketamine, caloric restriction and sleep deprivation also elicit similar rapid anti-depressant-like effects. However, mechanisms about the rapid anti-depressant-like effects remain unclear. Elucidating the mechanisms of rapid anti-depressant effects is the key to finding new therapeutic targets and developing therapeutic patterns. Therefore, in this review we summarize potential molecular and cellular mechanisms of rapid anti-depressant-like effects based on the pre-clinical and clinical evidence, trying to provide new insight into future therapy. © 2020 The Authors.
