This study aimed to explore the association of 14 proangiogenic microRNAs (miRNAs) with major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) occurrence in unprotected left main coronary artery disease (ULMCAD) patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

A total of 196 ULMCAD patients who underwent first ever CABG were recruited. The peripheral blood samples were collected prior to CABG, and then plasma samples were separated to detect expressions of 14 proangiogenic miRNAs by the reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Patients were regularly followed up to MACCE occurrence or 36 months after CABG.

MACCE occurrence at 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years was 7.1, 11.2, and 14.3%, respectively, and accumulating MACCE occurrence time was 32.7 (95% confidence interval 31.5-33.9) months. Both Kaplan-Meier curves and univariate Cox's regression analyses displayed that miR-let-7f, miR-19a, miR-126, miR-130a, and miR-378 high expressions were associated with lower accumulating MACCE occurrence. Furthermore, forward stepwise multivariate Cox's regression disclosed that miR-let-7f high expression and miR-378 high expression independently predicted decreased accumulating MACCE occurrence, whereas BMI (>25.0 kg/m2), diabetes, previous stroke, and higher disease extent were independent predictive factors for elevated accumulating MACCE occurrence.

Current health literature suggests that there has been a decline in the age of pubertal onset and that pubertal onset/duration of puberty may, besides weight status, be influenced by socioeconomic context.

The goal of this study was to determine whether pubertal onset/duration and puberty-triggering hormones luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) vary according to socioeconomic status (SES). 2,657 apparently healthy children and adolescents between 5.5 and 18 years from the area of Leipzig were recruited from the LIFE Child study. Age at pubertal onset/end of puberty was given in 738/573 children, respectively. Anthropometric parameters of puberty, blood measurements of LH and FSH, and questionnaires assessing SES were evaluated.

Lower SES was associated with earlier thelarche and longer duration of puberty in overweight/obese girls, whereas age of menarche was not affected. In boys with low SES, a trend versus earlier puberty onset can be seen. Lower SES was significantly associated with boys' age at mutation. No significant differences in boys' and girls' serum levels of LH and FSH during puberty according to SES were observed. Serum LH levels of 0.56 IU/L and serum FSH levels of 1.74 IU/L showed the best prediction of gonadarche in boys.

Genome analysis and phenotypic characterisation showed that this strain, K. sedentarius MBB13, was a moderately halotolerant aerobe with a branched aerobic electron transport chain and genes that could contribute to erythromycin resistance. The major compatible solute was glycine betaine, with ectoine and proline being deployed at higher osmolarities. Actinobacteria possess multiple WhiB-like (Wbl) regulatory proteins, and K. sedentarius MBB13 has four (WhiB1, WhiB2, WhiB3, and WhiB7). Wbls are iron-sulfur proteins that regulate gene expression through interactions with RNA polymerase sigma factors and/or other regulatory proteins. Bacterial two-hybrid analyses suggested that WhiB1 and WhiB2, but not WhiB3 and WhiB7, interact with the C-terminal domain of the major sigma factor, σA; no interaction was detected between any of the Wbl proteins and the only alternative sigma factors, σB, σH, or σJ. The interaction between σA and WhiB1 or WhiB2 was disrupted in a heterologous system under growth conditions that produce nitric oxide and the iron-sulfur clusters of the isolated WhiB1 and WhiB2 proteins reacted with nitric oxide. Thus, K. sedentarius strain exhibits the major phenotypic characteristics of the type strain and a comprehensive examination of the interactions between its four Wbl proteins and four sigma factors suggested that the Wbl proteins all operate through interaction with σA.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, having a profound and global impact on health, well-being, safety, and productivity. Although traditionally the prevalence of SUDs in Israel has been estimated to be lower than those in high-income countries, estimates and characteristics of individuals with SUDs in the past decade are lacking. In this work, we explored the prevalence of SUDs among the adult Jewish population in Israel, per different classes of substances across sex, age group, and other sociodemographic factors.

Data from an online representative sample of 4,025 respondents were collected, including the alcohol, smoking, and substance involvement screening test (ASSIST) metric and sociodemographic data.

We found that the most common SUDs were alcohol (10.5% [9.5-11.4]), cannabis (9.0% [8.2-9.9]), and sedative (3.6% [3.0-4.2]) use disorders. Alcohol-cannabis (3.2% [2.7-3.7]) and alcohol-sedative (1.04% [0.7-1.35]) were the most prevalent co-occurring SUDs.
