The independent effect of physical work on the risk of cognitive impairment in older Chinese older adults living in rural areas remains to be elucidated.

We aimed to determine whether physical work and physical exercise can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.

We collected data from 7,000 permanent residents without cognitive impairment (age ≥60 years) over a follow-up period of 2 years. We used the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess cognitive function. We performed multivariate Cox regression analyses to calculate adjusted Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% Confidence Intervals (%95 CIs) as measures of the association between physical work/exercise and cognitive impairment while controlling for potential confounders.

Over a median follow-up period of 1.93 years, 1,224 (17.5%) of 7,000 participants developed cognitive impairment, with a total incidence of 97.69 per 1,000 person-years. After adjustment for potential confounders, participating in physical work (HR 0.51; 95% CI 0.43-0.60) or physical exercise (HR 0.53; 95% CI 0.44-0.65) was associated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment. Stratified analyses suggested additive and multiplicative interactions between physical work and exercise. Agricultural work (HR 0.46; 95% CI 0.38-0.55), walking/tai chi (HR 0.54; 95% CI 0.44-0.67), and brisk walking/yangko (HR 0.57; 95% CI 0.33-0.97) exerted significant protective effects against cognitive impairment.

We investigated the combined effect of white blood cell (WBC) and platelet count on in-hospital mortality and pneumonia in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients.

A total of 3,265 AIS patients enrolled from December 2013 to May 2014 across 22 hospitals in Suzhou city were included in the present study. We divided patients into four groups according to their level of WBC and platelet count LWHP (low WBC and high platelet), LWLP (low WBC and low platelet), HWHP (high WBC and high platelet), and HWLP (high WBC and low platelet). A logistic regression model was used to estimate the combined effect of WBC and platelet counts on all-cause in-hospital mortality and pneumonia in AIS patients.

HWLP was associated with a 2.07-fold increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality in comparison to LWHP (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.02-4.18; P-trend =0.020). The risk of pneumonia was significantly higher in patients with HWLP than those with LWHP (adjusted OR 2.29; 95% CI, 1.57-3.35; P-trend <0.001). The C-statistic for the combined WBC and platelet count was higher than WBC count or platelet count alone for the prediction of in- -hospital mortality and pneumonia (all P < 0.01).

Mounting evidence has shown that Cyclin E1 (CCNE1) facilitates various carcinoma progression, but its function in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unclear.

Our study aims to explore the significance of CCNE1 in clinical progression and study its biological functions in LUAD.

CCNE1 expressions in LUAD specimens and cells were detected through quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT-RCR) and western blot. An immunohistochemistry technique was used to detect CCNE1 expression to explore its association with clinical parameters. The LUAD cells with stable knockdown of CCNE1 were constructed by small interfering RNA. The effect of CCNE1 on LUAD cells proliferation and apoptosis was evaluated through Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, and Annexin V/propidium iodide (AV-PI) assays, respectively. The cell migration and invasion were evaluated by Wound-healing and Transwell assays, respectively. The xenograft and lung metastasis mouse models were introduced to analyze how CCNE1 knockdown affects tumor growth and tumor metastasis.

Shortage of oxygen is a common condition for residents of high-altitude (HA) areas. In mammals, hemoglobin (Hb) has four derivatives oxyhemoglobin (Hb-O2)‎, carboxyhemoglobin (Hb-CO), sulfhemoglobin (Hb-S), and methemoglobin (Met-Hb). In HA areas, aberrant physiological performance of blood hemoglobin is well-established.

The study aimed to investigate the influence of 30 days of HA residence on rabbits' total Hb, Hb derivatives, Hb autooxidation rate, and antioxidant enzymes in comparison to low-altitude control rabbits. Further, the study aimed to investigate the effect of antioxidant-rich Angelica archangelica and/or Ginkgo biloba extracts on the same parameters in HA-resident rabbits.

Rabbits subjected to 30 days of HA residence were compared to low-altitude control rabbits. HA-residence rabbits were then orally administered 0.11 g/kg b.wt. of Angelica archangelica and/or Ginkgo biloba extract for 14 days. Hb derivatives and Hb autooxidation rate were measured spectrophotometrically. Antioxidant enzymes were estimated using specialized kits.
