Findings We show that in simple cases with a flat solid surface, the approximate expression works well. When applied to simulations on pore space images, the equation provides a robust estimate of contact angle, accurate to within 3°, when averaged over many fluid clusters, although individual values can have significant errors because of the approximations used in the calculation.Objective To evaluate the rate of pregnancy following hysteroscopic management of intrauterine adhesions. Design Retrospective study. Setting From June 2009 to December 2014 in a teaching hospital. Patients Women treated by operative hysteroscopy for intrauterine adhesions. Intervention Operative hysteroscopy to manage intrauterine adhesions. Main outcome measure rate of intrauterine pregnancy after hysteroscopic management of intrauterine adhesions. Results Out of the 202 women whom benefit from hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, 112(55%) had an effective pregnancy desire. Among them, an intrauterine pregnancy was obtained for 58 women (52%) with a trend to a lower rate for type IV and Vb intrauterine adhesions management (40.5%, p = 0.09). Pregnancy rates were similar for women undergoing one or more procedures. Conclusion Hysteroscopic management of intrauterine adhesions seems useful as it leads to a pregnancy rate of 52%. However, this rate is lower in case of type IV and Vb intrauterine adhesions. Repeated procedures don't seem to lead to less pregnancy; however, a more powerful prospective study should be performed to answer this specific question.Purpose To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and to identify factors associated with obesity, among the oldest old. Methods For this study, data from follow-up (FU) wave 7 and FU wave 8 of the "Study on Needs, Health Service Use, Costs and Health-Related Quality of Life in a Large Sample of Oldest-Old Primary Care Patients (85+)" (AgeQualiDe) were used. At FU wave 7, the mean age was 88.9 years (SD 2.9; 85-100 years). Body-mass-index (BMI) categories were defined according to the World Health Organization (WHO) thresholds underweight (BMI less then 18.5 kg/m²), normal weight (18.5 kg/m² ≤ BMI less then 25 kg/m²), overweight (25 kg/m² ≤ BMI less then 30 kg/m²), and obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²). Longitudinal regression analysis was used to determine factors associated with obesity. Results At FU wave 7, 3.0 % were underweight, 48.9 % were normal weight, 37.9 % were overweight, and 10.2 % were obese. Regressions showed that the probability of obesity decreased with age (OR 0.77 [95 % CI .593-.999]) and less chronic conditions (OR 1.32 [95 % CI 1.11-1.57]). The probability of obesity was not associated with sex, educational level, marital status, social isolation, visual impairment, hearing impairment, depression, and dementia. Conclusion Nearly half of the individuals in very late life had excess weight. Thus, excess weight remains a major challenge, even in very old age. Given the demographic ageing in upcoming decades, this is an issue which we should be aware of.Control of both human and canine leishmaniasis is based on a very short list of chemotherapeutic agents, headed by antimonial derivatives (Sb). The utility of these molecules is severely threatened by high rates of drug resistance. The ABC transporter MRPA is one of the few key Sb resistance proteins described to date, whose role in detoxification has been thoroughly studied in Leishmania parasites. Nonetheless, its rapid amplification during drug selection complicates the discovery of other mechanisms potentially involved in Sb resistance. In this study, stepwise drug-resistance selection and next-generation sequencing were combined in the search for novel Sb-resistance mechanisms deployed by parasites when MRPA is abolished by targeted gene disruption. The gene mrpA is not essential in L. infantum, and its disruption leads to an Sb hypersensitive phenotype in both promastigotes and amastigotes. Five independent mrpA-/- mutants were selected for antimony resistance. These mutants displayed major changes in their ploidy, as well as extrachromosomal linear amplifications of the subtelomeric region of chromosome 23, which includes the genes coding for ABCC1 and ABCC2. Overexpression of ABCC2, but not of ABCC1, resulted in increased Sb tolerance in the mrpA-/- mutant. SNP analyses revealed three different heterozygous mutations in the gene coding for a serine acetyltransferase (SAT) involved in de novo cysteine synthesis in Leishmania. Overexpression of satQ390K, satG321R and satG325R variants led to a 2-3.2 -fold increase in Sb resistance in mrpA-/- parasites. Only satG321R and satG325R induced increased Sb resistance in wild-type parasites. These results reinforce and expand knowledge on the complex nature of Sb resistance in Leishmania parasites.In agroforestry systems, trees modify climatic parameters over a given area and create a complex microclimate through interactions between topography, plant composition and organizational structure of trees. In this way, indicators such as surface temperature of tree canopy and pasture, monitored by infrared thermography, are important to monitor the thermal environment of animal production and pasture establishment. Goals of this study were (1) to evaluate temporal and local variations of temperature and humidity leaf surface of tree canopy and pasture in agroforestry systems by infrared remote sensing and, (2) to validate infrared thermography as a potential tool for assessment microclimate in agroforestry systems. The study was carried out between June 2015 and February 2016 in an experimental area located at 54°370'W, 20°270'S and 530 m altitude, in Brazil. Surface temperatures and humidity of tree canopy and pasture in two agroforestry systems with different densities and tree spatial arrangements were determined using infrared thermography. Air, black globe and dew point temperatures, relative humidity and wind speed were measured using digital thermo-hygrometers with datalogger. Moderate to strong associations have been identified between microclimate parameters and those monitored by means of thermography measurements (0.45 ≥ r ≤ 0.78), suggesting positive relationships and equally well explained by air temperature, black globe temperature and relative air humidity (R2 = 0.68 ≥ R2 ≤ 0.98).
