This study provides high-production strain, optimized medium, and bioprocess for the possible industrial production of Antarctic Geomyces red pigments in future. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Antarctic Geomyces red pigments showed high color value, nontoxic characteristic, and good water solubility. It holds potential for industrial use and is under development for food additive in China currently. This study provides an optional manufacturing process for this new kind of red pigments.

Volatile organic compounds are present at very low concentration but exhibit an important influence on flavor and aroma of tobacco leaves and products. During tobacco processing, at different stages, tobacco wastes occur. Since they are delivered directly from the tobacco plant, they are expected to have a similar aroma profile.

The volatile composition of three types of tobacco waste (scrap, dust, and midrib) was characterized for the first time and compared with tobacco leaves' volatile composition. Ultrasound-assisted extraction with hexane followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was successfully applied. Different ultrasound-assisted extraction parameters (temperature, time, and solventsolid ratio) showed a significant influence on the volatile profiles of the extracts obtained. Bay 11-7085 IKK inhibitor The most important compounds in tobacco leaves, scrap, and dust with the highest abundance were nicotine (up to 87.5%), 4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diol (up to 16.2%), and neophytadiene (up to 9.4%). In midrib, only nicotine was present in all extracts. The most abundant compounds in the extracts were quantified and subjected to optimization using response surface methodology.

Interpretative structural model (ISM) is used to explore the coupling relationship between subsystems and key factors within each subsystem. The results show that there have 6 factors, including emergency organization coordination, plan construction coordination, monitoring and early warning coordination, information sharing coordination, emergency command coordination, and emergency resource coordination are positively related to the successful implementation of coastal city disaster prevention and mitigation collaborative governance; emergency rescue coordination and emergency decision-making coordination are not directly related to the successful implementation of disaster prevention and mitigation collaborative governance in coastal cities. When the main factors work together, the impact on the successful implementation of disaster prevention and mitigation collaborative governance in coastal cities is not obvious. There are obvious hierarchical relationships and clear influence paths between key factors within each main factor.

Recent evidence suggests that dietary habits influence the development and severity of periodontitis. The present cross-sectional study evaluated the association between different types and quantity of alcoholic beverage consumption (alone and interacting with smoking) and the probability to suffer from severe periodontitis in the French e-cohort NutriNet-Santé.

The study population consisted of 35,390 adults (mean age 49.04 ± 13.94 years), who filled oral health questionnaires and completed at least three non-consecutive 24-hour dietary records. Data on type and frequency of alcoholic beverage consumption were obtained from a semi-quantitative self-reported alcohol frequency questionnaire; the daily quantity (g/day) was estimated from the 24-hour dietary records. The probability of severe periodontitis (main dependent variable) was assessed by calculating the modified periodontal screening score (mPESS) from selected questions.

A total of 7263 individuals (20.5%) presented a high probability of sufferid with current smoking.

Quantitative assessment of swallowing function is necessary to prevent swallowing impairment due to ageing. Though surface electromyography (EMG) has been widely used to measure swallowing activity, the relationship between EMG results and swallowing function is unclear.

This study examined the relationship between the temporal characteristics of muscle activity and laryngeal elevation (LE) during swallowing.

This study analysed 60 healthy volunteers in two age groups (young, between 20 and 38years; old, between 65 and 75years), each containing the same number of male and female participants. Surface EMG signals were recorded from the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscle groups (SH-EMG and IH-EMG, respectively). LE was measured using an array of pressure sensors. The participants swallowed 3mL of water under three swallowing speed conditions fast, normal and slow swallowing. The EMG duration, EMG time intervals before and after the onset of LE (pre-LE and post-LE intervals, respectively), and the LE velocity were analysed.

Both EMG duration and the post-LE interval of IH-EMG were significantly longer in the older group. As for the gender effect, the pre-LE interval of SH-EMG was significantly longer and the LE velocity was significantly higher in men than in women. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between pre-LE interval and LE velocity in the fast swallowing condition.

Though ageing slightly prolonged the muscle activity time, gender influenced swallowing activity in a more complex manner. Therefore, it is important to take gender into account when examining swallowing function with increasing age.

The aim of this study was to present a novel bile-duct obstructed area imaging (BOAI) and to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of this method in guiding hepatectomy for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) with intrahepatic biliary obstruction.

From May 2017 to October 2019, eligible patients who underwent hepatectomy guided by BOAI were enrolled. Perioperative outcomes and operative data were analyzed. To assess the feasibility of BOAI and Glissonean pedicle approach, demarcations based on them were compared. To verify the accuracy of BOAI staining of the target territory, simple linear regression analysis, and intraclass correlation coefficient were used to examine the relationship between predicted resected liver volume (PRLV) and actual resected liver volume (ARLV).

BOAI staining achieved valid demarcation in 15 (93.8%) of 16 patients, whereas the ischemic line achieved valid demarcation in only nine patients (57.3%; p = .017). ARLV and PRLV had a strong positive correlation (PRLV = 60.06 + 0.925 × ARLV; R = .945; p = .000). Meanwhile, ARLV (intraclass correlation coefficient = .971) achieved an excellent agreement with PRLV (p < .001).

The novel BOAI staining method can provide valid, feasible, and accurate demarcation line and may be an effective method in the surgical treatment of intrahepatic biliary obstruction.

Three preheat treatment methods were compared, including heating (at 65, 75, and 85 °C for 30 min) of raw soymilk, high-pressure steam heating (at 110, 120, and 130 °C for 10 s, ultra high temperature [UHT] treated) of dry soybeans, and milling of soaked soybeans in boiling water. Three UHT samples showed the highest oil body yields (13.59 to 13.87%) and protein yield (2.47 to 3.03%), while oil content in extracts was the lowest (30.97 to 46.25%). Soymilk heated at 65 or 75 °C for 30 min showed high oil body extraction yields (13.38 and 11.46%) and the highest oil extraction yields (6.38 to 8.38%) among all the samples. Three UHT samples had a higher average particle size and higher apparent viscosity compared with those of all the other samples. The results from sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and particle size distribution suggested heat treatment at 65 to 85 °C just lead to the partially denaturation and unfolding of storage protein instead of severe aggregation, while UHT (samples 5, 6, and 7) could lead to large amount soluble aggregates within oleosins and storage proteins via disulfide bonds. The diluted emulsion with 12% fat content remained stable during a 15-day storage period at 4 °C. The coffee stability of the diluted oil body emulsion indicated high oleosins and low storage protein content in the oil body was a benefit for the coffee stability. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Soybean oil bodies are natural sources of pre-emulsified oil derived from soybean and can be dispersed in an aqueous medium to form a stable emulsion system. This study provides the foundation for the preparation and application of soybean oil bodies with differing emulsion stabilities and extraction yields in the food industry.

Cereal co-products rich in dietary fibres are increasingly used in animal feed. The high fibre content decreases the digestibility and reduces the nutrient and energy availability, resulting in lower nutritive value. Therefore, this study investigated the ability of two carbohydrase complexes to solubilize cell-wall polysaccharides, in particular arabinoxylan (AX), from different cereal fractions of wheat, maize, and rice using an in vitro digestion model of the pig gastric and small intestinal digestive system. The first complex (NSPase 1) was rich in cell-wall-degrading enzymes, whereas the second complex (NSPase 2) was additionally enriched with xylanases and arabinofuranosidases. The extent of solubilization of insoluble cell-wall polysaccharides after in vitro digestion was evaluated with gas-liquid chromatography and an enzymatic fingerprint of the AX oligosaccharides was obtained with high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection.

The addition of carbohydrase increased the digestibility of dry matter and solubilized AX in particular, with the greatest effect in wheat fractions and less effect in maize and rice fractions.
